1: Merfolk (German guy mentioned above)
2-4 2 B/R Tokens (one of the was Matt Ferrando), Quick 'N Toast (Rob Seder)
5-8: (Lark, 2 Elves, NY RG)
It was a good tourney for the most part. Best moment of the day was seeing my friend play one of the most masterful games of Magic of all time, dealing 14 damage using one red mana (he played Swath Storm, and was at 2 life under Manabarbs). The next round he beat a kid who punted playing quick n toast (this was round 7) and the kid started crying. lol...
I went 5-2 in the SF Bay Area (CA) regionals with 'Lark. That was good enough for 21st place, but prizes only went out to the top 20 players. I was the *only* player who went 5-2 who go nothing. Stupid tiebreakers.
I lost to Faeries and Merfolk, while beating a second Merfolk deck, two BG decks (one Elves the other just BG good stuff), RWB Slivers (!), and one opponent who got a match loss for not showing up.
There seemed to be a lot of Merfolk, Faeries, and BG Elves making up the vast majority of the decks, although there was the usual smattering of "other" decks like Wizards, 'Lark, RDW, and some odd homebrews (see Slivers above).
In the last game of the last round of the day, I was able to win by removing the last 22 counters on all three of my Greater Gargadons while using Sower of Temptation to steal all his creatures and swinging for 27 damage in one turn.
Wait...that german guy won Edison? Nice...I met him last week at FNM, I think it was the same guy...i mean how many people that look and sound really german in the PA/NJ area are running Merfolk?
Went 3 and 3 in Philly, I was seated as high as 15th place at one point. I played GWr mid-range, saw a whole slew of different decks, lot of big mana, ramp, and red agro. My matches:
1st Round: Mono black control - Win 2/1
2nd Round: Quick'n Tosty: Lose 0/2
3rd Round: R/B Tokens: Won 2/1
4th Round: RGB Land Destruction: Won 2/1
5th Round: R/G Big Mana: Lose 1/2
6th Round: Fairy: Lose 0/2
Good games each round, except for the last one for the fairy player tried to cheat on me, (mumbling is not an excuse for lying when being asked a direct question on game state). Saw a ton of Firespout, Cloudthresher, Kitchen Finks and Cryptic Command, only 1 opponent I played against had Goyf.
Going to be rebuilding my deck after this, Devoted Druid saw a lot of play at the top tables in the mana ramp buids. Persist also saw a lot of play, but I think they are good in decks outside mine!
I went 3-3 drop at MN regionals. A few things I observed:
- Lark was at the bottom tables ALL day.
- Faeries isn't that good.
- Elves is probably the best deck in the format... STILL.
- Merfolk is really good.
- Burn is awful.
Trevor Jones won because he's good at magic. He played Gindy's elves and he cut garruk too.
I went 4-4 drop(9 rounds) playing rogues in my regionals which was completely flooded with elves and merfolk. My elves MU is like 90-10 and my merfolk is extremely 50-50. Faeries is also pretty 50-50ish for me. I played against 3 faeries decks, 3 merfolk decks, some scrub playing spawnwrithe and unsummon in some U/G tempo(?) deck that happened to beat me because he drew a bunch of cards that say timewalk as I got mana screwed, and the R/B stuart wright deck. I lost to a faerie deck because he definitely drew bitterblossom AND Scion of Oona all 3 games. I lost to 2 merfolk decks because they were very good at drawing cryptic command and lords, and I lost to the blue green pile because Oona, Queen of the Fae equipped with a Loxodon Warhammer is bad times for rogues.
Why couldn't I play against ANY of the elves decks? I was 4-0 for the first half of the tournament and then things went downhill. Four elves decks top 8d at my regionals, along with 2 merfolk, 1 faeries and 1 r/b tokens. I don't think I did anything wrong except for a few play mistakes that were made early on due to a lack of a good night's sleep, but other then that I think I just got screwed. I wouldn't go back and change what I played if I could. Sometimes the 90-10 W% against the deck that won the pro tour just doesn't get there..
hi i went 5-2 playing doran made 17th out of 112 the top 8 decks there was merfolk, merfolk, merfolk, merfolk, revlark, elves, red green bigmana, quick and toast. there was not that many faerie deck at the event. phoenix az the top 4 decks was merfolk by adam prosak, red green bigmana by riad mour... revlark by josh tyler and merfolk by xavier castillo.
I was at northwest regionals. For all interested parties, I recorded a podcast (about a half an hours worth) there that has interviews with three out of the top four. It'll be up on MTGcast later in the week after it's gone through some sound level editing, but since I'm sure you guys would love to hear this now, you can download the podcast by clicking here.
Went 4-3 at my regionals.... Played BG Land Destruction (sounds bad i know) deck runs very smoothly...
Round W/L Matchup
1/W/BG Elves(2-0)
2/L/BR Furystoke Tokens(0-2)
3/W/RG Bigstuff (2-0) (comparable to Zvi's pro tour deck)
4/W/Mono Red (2-0)
5/L/BG Elves (0-2) (horrible horrible draws for me, he had one god draw, and one draw he lucked into.
6/L/Reveillark(0-2) (worst matchup, if I change anything it is a couple board slots to beat this)
7/W/Merfolk(2-1)
Nobody in our playgroup tested that Furystoke deck, it was random as hell for a regionals tournament IMO, kind of out of left field and seemed as if you can get some garbage draws...
The B/G elves I lost, the guy stabilized with a llanowar elves and imperious perfect, chump blocking until he played a bitterblossom, then a garruk a couple turns later, I drew 12 (of 22) lands, and 5 (of 8) of a combination of BoP and Llanowar Elves...
Reveillark I lost for the fact that it is the worst matchup... the guy I played also had sower every relevant chance, it was pretty retarded.. That is how it goes sometimes
Between the Reveillark loss and BG Elves loss, I saw: 0 Primal Command, 0 Colossus, and I harmonized 3 times into a total of 7 land
It was all fun though, and I was impressed with my play today.
God I wish I could have gone to my Regionals...but it was a 5 hour drive to either of the places i'm close to. I would have laughed everytime someone played merfolk against me and although certain elf decks might have been annoying, there are few that have ever beaten my deck.
That coupled with the fact that I stuffed my SB full of Rev and Fae hate....man...I wanted to go so bad =(
I played Nassif's goblin deck in the Hartford regionals. I don't know that it's anywhere near a tier 1 deck but it's a ton of fun to play. My matches were:
1-2 vs Faeries
I lost game one when I had double Magus of the Moon because he had an island and I couldn't do anything about Mistbind Clique (he had Pestermite, double Scion...much faster clock than me).
I lost the other game to to clique as well. I had a Graven Cairns and all swamps and he just cliqued and pestermited my cairns and kept me from playing any spells.
1-1 vs Doran
Game 1 he gained ten life from Kitchen Finks and eventually overpowered me while he was still at a healthy 9 life. He had Bitterblossom out for most of the game and I killed a Doran, a Tarmogoyf and several Finks while keeping up enough pressure that he never had more than one faerie token but eventually ended up with Doran, Tarmogoyf and Chameleon Colossus in play and I was out of gas. My back-up plan of getting him to alpha strike and then haste in for the win with a gargadon out of nowhere fizzled when he thoughtseized it away. I probably should have scooped way earlier because he was playing a little slow and I think the match-up is in the R/B deck's favor post board.
The second game I had double Grave Pact but things were just going to slow and too much time had been eaten up. He had Bitterblossom but I just kept two-for-one-ing him with things like Mogg War Marshal. Then time for the match was called -- it was pretty neat. I got him down to six and I had two Marsh Flitters out. I topdecked a third Marsh Flitter, made both my other flitters 3/3 (clearing out all his blocks thanks to double Grave Pact) and swung in for the win -- topdecking Marsh Flitter for the win is one of the best parts about playing this deck.
2-0 vs Elves
I think he was mentally out of it. It seemed like he had board position game one and then just swung in with all his man-lands and I devasted him by blocking correctly to pump up my Knucklebone Witches.
Game two he mentally checked out to Magus of the Moon (he kept playing to see if he would draw pact but otherwise seemed to have resigned himself to defeat -- he played a wayfinder before the magus and searched for forest over swamp ...and had shown a terror game 1).
2-0 vs Quick 'N Toast
Game one I had a suspended gardadon and when he firespouted I was able to sack three War Marshal goblins to pump a couple Knucklebone Witches which he then couldn't deal with.
Game two I prowled an early Earwig Squad and only saw two firespouts so I took them and a Teferi's Moat. I thought that deck played four firespouts instead of three. So after he firespouted I played around firespout all game. He got down a Teferi's Moat on red but I just beat down with Marsh Flitters and big Knucklebone Witches.
Then I decided to drop because it was iffy whether I could make top eight even if I won out because I started out 0-1-1. I could have played for prizes but I had a family thing that was more important than playing for eights packs or whatever it would have been.
I looked over the top tables during round five and saw G/B elves with Troll Ascetic over Imperious Perfect at table 1 (mirror match). In the fourteen or so decks there were probably four G/B, three merfolk, three faeries, two R/B (one like Nassif's and one with Nantuko Husk, Nether Traitor and Epochrasite), and a Reveillark. There was a guy at 3-1 playing monoblue control with Desert and Platinum Angel but that was the only really roguish deck that I saw near the top tables.
I just found out that one of my friends qualified at Hartford with a 5-color version of Project 420.5d. He ended up going 7-1. Now we'll never hear the end of it from him.

Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
The only good thing about this post is the edible chocolate roaches they gave out! Mmm mmm!
*crawl crawl*
Wait a minute, edible roaches don't crawl! EDIBLE ROACHES DON'T CRAWL!
I went 6-1-1 at Edison Regionals and got tenth. The draw was unintentional and a real heart breaker. I played NY RG and played well all day. It's probably my fault. I got sacked out in round 2 but in round 6 I was paired against rg ramp. I get game 1, but game 2 goes on forever. Once I realized that i was going to inevitably lose, I should've conceded and gone to game 3 instead of trying to take the match to time.
Also trainswalker, ferrando didn't win, he lost to elves.
Dalranth was the damnation really topdecked? When I was watching him counter your imperious perfect he was holding two damnations in his hand. I thought you said that you only lent him two?
We had 80 people on the mark. Field was lots of quick and toast, lark, about 15 players for lark. Some B/G elves. Only 4 other fearie decks that I saw.
I Made top 8 which consisted of
Seed
1: Lark
2: B/G Elves
3: Zvi.dec, Exact decklist Zvi took to hollywood
4: Merfolk
5: Merfolk
6: Lark
7: Me with Fae
8: Lark
So against B/G elves i lost the die roll and kept a hand with a couple counters and visions, Game was kinda fast, i got low on life but swung for the last 7 when he tapped out for colossus and i played Ven Clique with mistbind on the board.
Game two was scary. I had to mull to six, kept a three land cryptic nameless, terror hand. He goes first plays tree top. I I draw a Mistbind say go. He plays guilt leaf thought seizes the nameless, and plays mana elf. I rip a bitterblossum off the top. play it. I then start taking beats from a vanquisher, terror it draw a land cryptic something. Get a second bitter blossum down. I have 9 tokens out at the last crucial play im at 6 he is at 7, my end step i have 4 mana untapped he plays cloudthresher full cost i rune snag. He then rips another one and plays it main phase, i have spell stutter and win. Had he evoked either cloud thresher i would of lost. Good game.
So all in all I'll see any one else in chicago who made it!
Well I Played a really good Sliverweave deck I designed and went 0-4. It only folded to one deck in testing RG MANA RAMP. Guess what i played for 4 straight rounds???? Unbelievable 4 rounds of RG mana ramp. UGGGGGGH. Talk about bad luck.
So I played scissors and played rock, rock, rock and rock.
I saw alot of faeries and merfolk. Rev was high too. Top tables at end of 5th round had almost all faeries. BLAH.
I played a Doran deck that was altered to be more controlling to help bad matchups. Didn't help enough though, as I went 6-3 at the NC regionals. Player count 264.
Doran-Aggro (Lose)
R/G Ramp (Win)
Merfolk (Win)
Red Deck Wins (Win)
B/G Elves (Win)
B/G Elves (Lose)
R/G Elves with Deus, Magi, and Fulminators (Win)
Reveillark (Lose, even with faerie macabres and extirpates)
Merfolk (Win)
I had several cards just for faeries, and there were plenty, I just never played one. While I'd say NC regionals is usually aggro oriented, the field was incredibly diverse this time around.
Playing Swans I went to New Mexico Regionals went 5-2 and 9th by 3ths of a percent away from top 8... on tie breaks. I lost to faeries who won and BG elves who top 8ed on a play mistake i lost to the elves. I played swans 1 land in hand and a seismic assaul I thoughtseized him 2 turns b4 so he had a slim chance of drawing removal. Rather than saying end of turn (he had 2 mana up) i pitched the land to seizmic and hit wans in rsp he nameless inversioned it. If i had said end he prob would have EOT nameless Inversion and in Response I would have killed him. I checked after the match my next cards and they were legacy weapon and land then 2 salvages with more than 40 cards in library =/.
I'm poor so i didn't by the 4th pact. If I were to change the deck it would be -1 omen +1 pac -2 primal command +1 omen and gnomes in side. It was VERY good and Lark which was 30 percent here is its best match only 5 Fae decks here and 80 players. I just had to get a Fae that wouldnt draw when I was 4-1...
My dad Qed in Charlotte playing faeries went 8-1-1. Winning against BG in top 8.
My brother went 4-2-1 with lark losing to 2 larks =/ Unintentional tie with Quick N Toast
Well I stongly recommend blue and swans it is a fast combo and very good.
Man I soo wanted to go with my dad to Nats... My brother has qualified for nats 2 years ago and now my dad has so im the only 1 in my magic family that hasn't. That 3 tenths of a matchbreaker percentage point was hurting, and that play mistake after I was 3-0 and the most talked about person/deck... and then Faeries round six was the final blow =/. Well it was fun all in all.
i went 3-0, and then got luck sacked by a doran deck a lark deck and a quick and toast deck...
heartbreaker really...
You got luck sacked by lark and Q & T. I would figure that lark would have a good MU against you and i know Q&T does... something about 4 sweepers, and moats post board etc.
Then in the top 8 I made a crucial play mistake against Project 420, costing me the game and the invite. Oh well, I got a box, and I probably wouldn't have gone to chicago anyways...
Went 5-3 at Hartford regionals, started out 3-1, losing first round mainly off of a misplay, then faced lark 3 times in 4 rounds, and lost twice to it, and unfortunately it was really my only bad matchup. Played 3 lark decks a quick n toast, NY RG, merfolk, a rock deck, and I feel dumb for not remembering what else. Felt good after the first 4 rounds, but I just got thrown in the trash by lark.
Ran a rogue BRu control concoction that probably could have done better, but rev was just all over the 3-1 and 3-2 tables. Every other matchup was at least somewhat in my favor Was a good time, got 6 packs and placed 47th.
The NJ top 4 was like this:
1: Merfolk (German guy mentioned above)
2-4 2 B/R Tokens (one of the was Matt Ferrando), Quick 'N Toast (Rob Seder)
5-8: (Lark, 2 Elves, NY RG)

3rd Round: R/B Tokens: Won 2/1
4th Round: RGB Land Destruction: Won 2/1
5th Round: R/G Big Mana: Lose 1/2

Yes i am the same guy who trades/sells on MOTL AND Wizards of the Coast and i trade on POJO.
I played against:
Round 1: RDW
Round 2: U/G/W Lark
Round 3: Merfolk
Round 4: Merfolk
Round 5: G/b elves
Round 6: Faeries
Round 7: G/b elves (ID)
Round 8: Merfolk (ID)
Final record 6-0-2
Then in the top 8 I made a crucial play mistake against Project 420, costing me the game and the invite. Oh well, I got a box, and I probably wouldn't have gone to chicago anyways...

Ran a rogue BRu control concoction that probably could have done better, but rev was just all over the 3-1 and 3-2 tables. Every other matchup was at least somewhat in my favor Was a good time, got 6 packs and placed 47th.
