I went to a constructed FNM for the first time ever and played in my first DCI sanctioned Constructed tournament. I've got an 1800+ Limited rating, but my constructed rating has been at 1600 until tonight. I played a Kithkin/Goyf variant and went 3-1.
First round I played a TarmoRack deck. I lost my first game, then won the next two. This game was pretty tough at first, but then I sided in 4 Dodecopods and 2 Pithing Needles and it kind of swung the game my way. The first Dodecopod hit the table and he was playing hesitant the rest of the 2 games.
Second round I played a Goblin deck, B/R with Gargadon and Fodder Launch... I went 2-0, I was very worried about the match up with Tarfire as it pops my Cenn or my Knight, but it worked out pretty easy for me.
Third round I played against Kithkins, a guy that had just beat a friend of mine who is pretty decent and I thought I was up for test. This guy's deck was like a glorified pre-con, with the Balloonist and Goldmeadow Lookout and a bunch of other chaff... I was surprised he made it 2-0. Made me question the power of the room. I beat him 2-0 with ease.
Fourth and final round I played a guy with mono-blue. The first game went to me after mana issues from his part. Second game I got smacked by my own Guided Knight, and my Lifelink First Striker put me away. Game 3 went to him after a similar situation. I couldn't draw into anything to deal with him stealing my beef and I lost 1-2.
Over all I went 3-1, or 7-3 for tiebreakers and I took 3rd place out of about 20-22 people. The tournament was free and I don't have to go into States with Zero experience... just next to none. I'll probably get smashed, but it was fun testing out the deck and I really like the build I made.
What is the consensus with Friday Night Magic? Is it generally a weaker crowd? What should I expect for States? Any constructed pointers would be cool, as I'm brand new at this. TANKS.
FNMs are generally a weak pool of players. I know there are a lot of weak players where I play, so a lot of the times the better players (myself included) play janky decks to challenge ourselves and have fun. For Example: my friend Top 8'd with a Sprout Swarm / Null Profusion deck for a few weeks while I Top 8'd with a Warp World deck. I think a lot of the time people will build decks according to their budget. They would play monoblack Rack rather than splash green because Goyfs are so expensive. Likewise, the kithkin player might not have splashed green because Gaddock Teeg is so hard to get at the moment.
States is a lot like FNM in terms of playskill. The good FNM players evaluate the metagame, choose a deck to play, playtest it and create a sideboard, and hope to do well. At the same time all of the bad FNM players are pooling their money together to buy Tarmogoyfs and Teegs to go in their decks, even if they can't get everything their deck needs to be optimal. Overall, I would consider States to be a bit like a constructed prerelease in terms of skill.
This really depends on what area you live in and who plays in that area. My local games shop has players rated in the top 20 of our city yet they all come to the same store for FNM. A result of this is a fairely competitive FNM with a high level of play skill.
Yeah normally the most competitive players don't play FNM all that much, but it depends on where you live.
I've seen players trying to up their rating by going an FNM and 3-0 dropping. They play the first 3 rounds and then drop right afterward. Then again I have seen people who were qued for a PT playing at FNM with the attention of losing to lower their rating. The idea was to make sure they've a lower rating meaning they'd K many of the people they beat at the PT, but would not lose much to people they'd lose too.

1 janky mana screw loss and you could drop your rating like 50pts.
well since it's only 8K you'd have to lose quite a few of them.... But yes, having playing FNM's and gone 4-1-1 and lost points are interesting.....
