Surgical Extraction on Unburial Rites is more devastating than on Borborygmos. Losing Rites neuters almost any chance of getting an Assault effect into play in a timely manner (outside of drawing into one of the two Assaults). Which is the main problem I have with the reanimation versions of this deck. They are much more susceptible to grave hate. Deathrite can null out a lot of the gas. Which makes having a way to kill them much more important. Though I'd probably still recommend Lightning Bolt for that role over Lightning Axe. They can exile the discarded card with Deathrite in response to the Axe (assuming it's active) since the card is discarded as part of the cost to put the Axe on the stack.
Unusual but I actually disagree with you on that one. Unburial rites with 0 targets is far more useless than 4 creatures you may actually be able to eventually cast. We have the tools to stall the board out until 8 turns when we can hard cast 1 if necessary. Elesh norn and sun titan are also castable. Removing the threat itself in my opinion is always better. Against reanimator in legacy would you exile reanimate to remove other copies, or grislebrand to remove the threat entirely? Not perfect since that deck runs multiple reanimation spells, but the same concept. They could show and tell a grislebrand or actually eventually hard cast one.
@Capt. Nick, I tested against Merfolk a couple weeks ago, and man, if they get off to a two Lord start, the matchup feels un-winnable.
@mykatdied, I'd prefer to play Smallpox over Lightning Axe, as it's a more powerful spell in a vacuum, but this list REALLY wants T1 R, making T2 Pox relatively inconsistent. @Capt. Nick, I may test with 1 Lightning Bolt and 1 Axe instead of 0/2, just to see how both cards operate.
If I include Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, do I have to include the Lingering Souls package, too? Ol' Ellie is obviously better with company, but I just feel that Lingering Souls is a clunky card. Right now I'd rather have removal in those valuable deck spots, but I'm open to other opinions. I keep forgetting about Iona, Shield of Emeria because I don't own a copy - gotta put her in somewhere! I assume you board her in against all blue control decks, Twin, Burn, Goblins, Merfolk ...
@ mykatdied: I guess it's just my deck but I rarely, if ever, get above 5 mana in a game. Even if you do get to the 8 mana to cast Borborygmos, they are going to have removal for him, or have disrupted him away before he becomes relevant. I guess technically it would be slightly more value than Unburial with no targets but he does have Sun Titan. Infinite Sun Titans seems a bit better to me than hardcasting Borborygmos.
@ theMonster: I don't think Elesh Norn requires you to play Lingering Souls. I mean, they are good together for sure but it is more about her giving your opponent's creatures -2/-2 that is going to win you the game.
I don't really think you need souls to make elesh good. At the very least she nerfs the poop out of your opponent's creatures. Against fish that can be incredibly necessary to stabilizing through multiple Lords. If you can play 4 graven cairns that'll help a lot since you can fetch your way to the rest as double black or triple red are your main issues then they can easily fix that. Even urborg, tomb of yawgmoth can help fix that issue. I play it as a 1 of and when you see it and don't need it, it's fine. If you see it and do need it then it's awesome. At worst when you don't really want it, it pitches to spells or is just another land to help mana fix
Well, y'all convinced me to run Elesh Norn. I just always linked her with Lingering Souls. I'd cut one Borborygmos for her. We'll see how the Praetor does. And I've been running one Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and would never leave home without it. Many games went T1 Faithless Looting, T2 Life from the Loam, T3 Urborg -> Liliana of the Veil. I'm apprehensive about four Graven Cairns, though, because multi-filter opening hands are mulligans. Maybe a third one, cutting a Copperline Gorge, would work(?). In that case, with all that filtering, I guess I could run Smallpox. But is the instant speed (and 1-drop-ness) of a card like Lightning Bolt/Lightning Axe too valuable to cut? I honestly don't know the answer. The only instant speed removal I'd then have in the maindeck is one Abrupt Decay. But maaaaaan, Smallpox is a beating when you infect that T2 Tarmogoyf.

I like dropping smallpox on a turn 1 deathrite shaman. If they ran him out they probably really want him to make mana turn 2 for liliana. The creatureless list I run has 2 bolt, 4 smallpox, 2 flame jab and 2 pyroclasm main board. If you really want instant speed removal keeping bolts is the way to go. Lightning axe may not be bad though since exarch has 4 toughness and goyf is most likely gonna be 4 or 5 toughness from the start.
@mykatdied, I'd like to try and find room for 2 Smallpox in my list. You think it's worth it to run only 2, or is it an all-or-nothin' type card? My first proposed cut would be the lone Abrupt Decay in the main. I have 2 in the side, so I have access to that effect. I've also found that producing BG early with my list is tricky. (Most of my T2 Life from the Loams are with RG.) Plus, since I'm testing 2 Lightning Axes, I have instant speed removal already. The second cut is where things get tricky. I think Mulch is a necessary enabler, so I'd like to leave those 2 copies in. I'm testing the 2 Axes, so I'd like to leave those in right now. Is it heresy to go down to 1 Flame Jab? I have a lot of redundancy as far as land chucking effects: 2 Seismic Assault, 3 Borborygmos Enraged. If I add the 2 Pox, I'd probably cut the basic Plains or Copperline Gorge for a third Graven Cairns, right?
Hey guys,
I created the rug delver loam a little while back and im back in on exploring seismic in modern. I was recently inspired by the legacy pox deck that won scg to test out squee and oh man does that card deliver.
My starting point today was jaberwockeys loam control and im playing 2 squees, he has felt like the strongest card in the deck by a mile. Blocking goyf, turning looting into divination with flashback. Im wondering if playing a singleton stormbind would be good since it comboes very well with loam and squee... This is an angle that deserves some testing, anyone tried it?
A new addition that ive found is a good replacement for innocent blood, the name escapes me 1 mana black sorcery destroy a creature with the lowest power, but it feels like a 4 of main givin what were trying to do.
Ideally there would be a toolbox enabler such as entomb in modern but there doesnt seem to be anything close, gifts is too high ccc in my opinion. Playing 28 lands id like there to be a way to kill people with just a land combo, and so far im playing 1 ravine 1 mutavault and 1 lavaclaw reach, anyone aware of any kind of land combo we can abuse with thespians stage or anything else?
@sirstompalot, I don't think Stormbind is where we want to be, considering we're playing a card in Seismic Assault that is much more efficient - no mana in the activation cost. Discarding at random also doesn't guarantee you'll pitch Squee, Goblin Nabob. Test it and let us know, though!
I got a bunch o' games in against Jund and Twin today, and here's what I found:
- Smallpox was really inconsistent in my build. If I was on the play and nabbed a T1 Deathrite Shaman or a T2 Tarmogoyf, it was awesome. Other than that, I would have much preferred another spell. It was useless against Twin, obviously. My goal is to get to 3W to flashback Unburial Rites and make a monster, so setting my combo back a turn seemed counterintuitive. I can see it being amazing in the creatureless lists, though, because they want to grind out a long game of attrition. But I want to exhume idiots and chuck lands as quickly as possible! Plus, I just about ALWAYS want to start with R on T1. I'm going to try instant speed removal in its place.
- 1 Flame Jab and 2 Raven's Crimes were NOT enough. Upping each by one copy.
- Y'all were right; Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite was a stalwart. She definitely won me games.
- I played four game 1s against Jund and four sideboarded games, and we split them all. I'm encouraged by that, as Jund packs a TON o' hate. All our games were grindy, but I never felt like any were out of reach.
- Twin, though, was always an uphill battle. The only games I won were when I went nuts with Raven's Crime - can't Remand 'em all! Seeing as I'm swapping out the Poxes, though, I think my matchup will improve slightly. In my 75, after testing, I'm leaning towards 3 Abrupt Decay (1 main, 2 side).
- I was never able to find Iona, Shield of Emeria in the sideboarded games against Twin, but my opponent told me he was VERY scared of her.
So here's my revised list that I may play in a tournament on Tuesday:

Stormbind. Let's compare. 2 mana: Discard a card, deal 2 damage.
Assault. 2 mana to cast loam: Discard 3 lands, deal 6 damage.
Not a bad idea... just not as efficient as we do need to be with our mana.
Wretched Banquet. B, sorcery - Destroy target creature if it has the least power or is tied for least power among creatures on the battlefield.
I think vendetta is probably better. Perhaps even disfigure.
I don't really think we need a toolbox in modern. In legacy there are utility lands worth finding, in modern... not so much. Stage could become a valakut? Not really any utility lands you would want to copy. Maybe an opponent's celestial colonnade if you can actually activate it. Just doesn't seem all that great.

Maybe try 1 or 2 gifts ungiven main board to help assemble and dig for everything you need. You can do something like; Elesh, Borygamos, titan, unburial. Then it is like, choose your death... It can also help you find iona after board. Not sure if it is the perfect answer for you, but it seems like you want a blue splash. 1 of steam vents should do nicely. Maybe a watery grave.

Ooooooh, Gifts Ungiven! Livin' the dream, all five colors. I like that idea a lot, as I could even get Loam, Crime, etc. I want to be able to maximize my ability to fetch for a blue land, so should I run some number of Scalding Tarns instead of Arid Mesas? In that case, I'd run a Watery Grave so I can get it with Verdant Catacombs or Tarn. A configuration like 4 Catacombs/2 Tarns/2 Mesas(?). I'll have to play around.
Most of the Gifts lists I see run 4 Gifts/1 Rites/2 monsters. If I'm gonna run 2 Gifts (which I think is a good number), can I shave off, say, 1 Unburial Rites and something like 1 Mulch? Where would your cuts be?

Well mulch is still great if you can reanimate your guy since it fills your hand with land. You can probably drop another boborygamos, and an unburial rites to just run 2. That way you don't have to mess with your land configuration all that much. Just run a singleton grave, maybe a singleton steam vents. This also means you can ignore smallpox since you now have a more guaranteed way of finding it all.
Not sure if it is relevant or not but I will be out of the country for a couple weeks and won't be able to post here with any regularity, if at all. So just wanted to leave a heads up. I hope testing and tournaments go well for you all.
Welcome to the thread sirstompalot. It'll be nice to get your input on the archetypes you've played. There are so many directions to go with the deck, having more minds working towards a bettering each other's decks is always a good thing. If you have an updated list I can get the primer caught up when I return.
Has anyone tested with Crucible of Worlds recently? I'd assume just as a one-of it'd be decent. It lets you Ghost Quarter repeatedly once you get your lock going without losing you 2 damage each turn. It also helps with mana fixing when you have a fetch in the 'yard as well. I'll try it our when I get the chance.
Crucible of Worlds might be good, Capt. Nick. Let us know how it works out. Where ya off to?
I decided that making Gifts Ungiven work is too cumbersome. Leaving 3U untapped when we could be Loaming/Crime-ing/Looting, etc., smells fishy, and our opponent can prepare for it. The mana base is greedy to begin with, and making U for Gifts and W for Rites proved too tough in testing.
A friend of mine suggested adding a playset of Deathrite Shamans to the Reanimator list as a way to speed up the combo by a turn (as well as T2 Liliana of the Veil or Seismic Assault), serve as another quasi-win condition, and draw removal (notably Path to Exile) to increase the survival rate of our monsters. Eating our own lands in a deck that wants to use Life from the Loam might seem like a non-bo (and Shamans make our Pyroclasms a little worse), but my buddy insists that, in his testing against RG Tron, Merfolk, and Affinity, the Shamans were magnificent. Since my Arid Mesas haven't arrived yet - I have a playset of Marsh Flats - I thought I'd give the Shamans a try at a Modern tournament at my LGS tomorrow.
Shamans seem completely fine. I wouldn't worry about that at all. Speeding up a turn faster than splinter twin seems good as well. You are further from the control aspect, but closer to the combo aspect which can be good.
My mana base looks VERY painful. I guess it doesn't matter, though, 'cuz I'm trying to kill on T4.
My sideboard needs a LOT of work. I have no idea what's in this metagame, as it's my first time playing at this store. Pithing Needle seems like a good catch-all, turning off hate like Scavenging Ooze and Relic of Progenitus, unfair stuff like Karn Liberated, and manlands like Celestial Colonnade. Timely Reinforcements should be good against Affinity and Burn, and reanimating Elesh Norn after making Soldiers just seems awesome. Should I have access to more than two Abrupt Decays in my 75?
@mykatdied, Leyline of the Void and Leyline of Sanctity - do people play them? EDIT: I care about Blood Moon, too, but Abrupt Decay can take care of that and is probably better overall, though, you're right. Also, I might not roll with the Shamans. In goldfishing, I just never seem to get enough lands in my hand to do anything productive with Raven's Crime or Assault effects. I thought it would speed up my combo, but since I'm diluting my deck by cutting enablers like Mulch for Shamans, it hasn't gotten any faster.
Blood moon is certainly problematic, you have deathrite so that makes it easier to fight through and deal with. I guess leylines are played. I would be more concerned with enchantments then artifacts. Perhaps more ray to increase the odds of having it or drawing into it. Seems like ray is possible better than grudge with that in mind since most of our removal controls affinity just fine. I don't think dropping mulch was the right call. Playing grisly salvage might be a better option, it digs 1 deeper and gives you a land or creature.

Instead of the third Graven Cairns, I'm adding a Lavaclaw Reaches as another way to win the game that's returnable by Sun Titan. I didn't really miss a basic Plains.
Stormbind. Let's compare. 2 mana: Discard a card, deal 2 damage.

Since Deathrite Shaman ostensibly makes this more of a combo build, prioritizing speed over resiliency, I cut the Flame Jabs. In Shaman-less builds, two would go in. I think all four copies of Unburial Rites and Faithless Looting is correct in a combo strategy, so two Mulches got the axe - not positive if that's right, though. Sun Titan wasn't pulling its weight, so he got the kibosh, too. Occasionally he'd bring back a Liliana of the Veil, but most times I'd rather animate Borborygmos Enraged or Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite.
