I'm certainly in no position to judge as you produce amazing work on a regular basis, Galspanic, but the colors in the border extension appear much more saturated than the colors of the original art. Is this a trick of the scanner/camera?
There will always be a very slight difference in the way they appear to the eye, because the surfaces aren't the same - paint is very very matte and ink is semi-gloss. But, in this case, it's the scanner. Anything that has titanium white in it will do weird things when scanned. That pigment in particular flattens layers of paint film faster than anything and the scanner seems to pick up on it a lot more than our eyes.
Hi everybody, this is my first alter and first post in this thread. I want to thank everyone for sharing their work. It's been a great source of inspiration and motivation.
I chose Spell Pierce specifically as a first card as the colors and style are very forgiving to an extended border in my opinion. I'm not too pleased with some of the color transitions on the right by the set symbol or the spell effects in the upper right hand corner but I learned a lot on this card.
Also a question I had about sleeving up cards. I plan on altering an entire deck that will get played quite a bit. How do people sleeve cards for use? Are perfect fits useful/necessary?
Managed to get another one done today. Sticking with the easy backgrounds for now. I'm happy with the result for the time invested.

That Spell Pierce looks fine especially for a first-time alter. Everyone's gotta start somewhere!
Perfect Fits are great at keeping cards safe from random dirt and possible spills. With just single sleeves, the tops of the cards tend to get dirt on them. While it can be kinda a hassle, I think that double-sleeving is worth it especially for cards that will see a lot of play (and you'd especially want to protect them if they are all altered).
Waste Not and Wall of Fire are confimed in M15 but the biggest news is that the card frame is getting another change.
So, it looks like we have to adjust our design a little if we are keeping the text box in there.... sort of curious how they will look with my normal plain ol' art extensions.

I like the new layout. Having slightly larger art gives me hope that I may be able to do some nice full-art cards without it looking too off-center. I'm probably just getting my hopes up there, but it can be tricky finding a card that you can alter and draw the eye down from the top of the picture, you know?
Anyway. Off to find a card I can do full-art on, now that I've talked myself into it...

Thanks for the information. I'll definitely look into perfect fits for my EDH deck. I managed to get another card done (on the last couple days of vacation :))
Color matching seems like its going to be the most difficult part. Obviously detail and matching the style present their own challenges but from what I have browsed you can get a great effect without matching the style and/or detailing if the colors are right.
I took a look at your blog and I am very impressed by your work. Do you (or anyone else for that matter) have a process you follow for color matching? I'm sure experience and practice are a huge part of it. Right now I'm thinking that bringing my colors further onto the original art is necessary.
Linging the text boxes is also presenting an issue. Do people have experience with/recommend a micron pen with a straight edge instead of trying to paint the border or does that create a weird effect? Obviously my poor lining stands out more because its black next to white.
Final question. Right now I think color matching and paint consistency are the most important things for me to work on. On the Squelch the white isn't very smooth, especially along the bottom of the card, but I felt it was better to leave it as is and move on to the next card rather than build up too much paint. If anyone else sees something I would be grateful for advice.

Colour matching is important, but you rarely have to get the colour exact. You can typically mix a colour that is close to what you want (usually a bit darker), and then paint into the original art on the card a bit. From there I will typically blend it right onto the card, often using white.
Most of my extended art alters involve painting over the original art quite a bit, so that perfect colour matching is less of an issue. Check out my alters page for examples, but a better example would be Cardkitty. Cardkitty alters typically show the most painting into the card to create a consistent style and consistency.
I also recommend fading your alters to a darker (often black) colour at the bottom, unless there is some detail you want to capture at the bottom. It typically looks nicer/classier in my opinion.
Ah, that makes sense. Erasing will obviously strip the finish (and the next 4 layers of ink) off there. I might have to do that with the CMD13 cards.

Hmmm, I'm not sure I like the new borders. The good thing is that it has more art and text and less black border, this means more art to extend and a bit less surface to cover. The part I don't like is what they did on the bottom. Those curves seem totally out of place for me, like the bottom of the card is from another, more recent game. Overall these are good changes for us alterers, probably I'll get used to those curves after some time.

Yes, color matching is hard, if not impossible for me, so one thing you can do to get around that is to have your (non matching) color shading smoothly go over the card's. Just match the color as much as possible and then spread a bit of it on the art's edges with a dry brush or your finger. Not sure how it works with different kind of paints though.
Linging the text boxes is also presenting an issue. Do people have experience with/recommend a micron pen with a straight edge instead of trying to paint the border or does that create a weird effect? Obviously my poor lining stands out more because its black next to white.
I did the same when I started but there is a more simple solution. Use a slightly wet toothpick to clean the paint from the textboxs, if your layer is thick better do it right away, otherwise you can do it after finishing the card. Unless of course you want your to have a lining then I'll recommend the Sakura micron pens or the Uni Pin fine line which I find more durable.

You mean your white was thick and bumpy or that it was thin and you can see the card border beneath it, cause I can't see anything wrong in the photo.
