Hey guys, just wanted to see if anyone else felt the same way.
I like playing MGS for a nostalgia aspect, here and there. And rarely go to FNM events.
Every time I do there are a number of "regulars" who are very dramatic, loud, hard to deal with or just be around in general.
It doesn't help that rounds are 45mins to an hour depending on the shop owner's random scoring/time limit system.
I find that it's not an age thing, there are some well adjusted college-going teenagers that have nothing but respect for those around them and are generally easy going. And there are grown men who buy into this nerdy persona that they feel they need to buy into.
I feel these types of people tend to push away more than a few customers.
I have tried multiple shops, It's always the same type of person, fedora, baggy jeans less than desirable hygiene as the regulars.
On rare occasions there are some well-adjusted members of society, few guys coming into the place with hermes ties on, and I distinctly remember playing against a man slightly older than I with a panerai PAM on his wrist. It's nit just the way these people dressed, its how they carried themselves, not yelling loudly or running around the shop like children.
From your screen name, may I ask where you are from? Where are you playing at? It seems like Riverside?
I am from a nearby area, so I can suggest places to go. It seems like you are more into the casual aspect of the game and don't enjoy the really competitive nature too much. If so, I think GMI, Abbycat Comics, or Dice of War would be fine for you. If you want me to suggest some more competitive place, I could do that too.
I have played in near the 951 area for about 6 yrs now (coming from NorCal) and I have only seen 1 guy ever with a Fedora play Magic. And despite our competitive nature vs. each other, he was actually a good guy.
Also honestly, you can't play Magic too much nowadays with newer players (for obvious reasons) for the nostalgia effect. I still remember when Natural Selection and Psionic Blast were amazing cards. Royal Assassin + Nettling Imp... Most of these cards are just simply NOT around anymore or have been severely outclassed. Honestly, most of the players who played with these cards don't play anymore. When I find another player who has played as long as me, it really makes me happy to reminisce about old stuff, but you can't expect new players to understand stuff like Mahamoti Djinn + Invisibility is GG. Sometimes, I talk too much myself, but I try to remember this.

I went to college in riverside around the time you were playing MTG.
i unfortunately had quit long before that. i played a lot during ice age, and was already "dabbling" for ****s and giggles by the time onslaught or odyessey had come out. I have some early ravnica cards though, that sounds about the time you were playing or had just started, 2005-2006ish right?
I live further down, about 50 miles, where north county meets riverside.
i know you're probably going to say something along the lines of "there is actually a playerbase out there!?!" haha
the answer is kinda, i've been messing around with magic cards for 2 years now just for the hell of it and spending like $3 a year max on them due to lack of interest then i find a stack of cards in the junk drawer and build a deck again. i've been playing longer than most of the players out here. Kind of a week by week attendance, myself sadly included. I have nothing against standard, or most of the players. Tapping basic lands and not having a planeswalker in my deck fulfill the needs of my nostalgia kick.
Just some of the regulars that are there 3-4 times a week, and for every FNM. I just wanted to know if i am alone in the whole just play and not baby sit, or yell about who's banging who's girlfriend or the teenage nerdy girls cosplaying.
Out of all these various threads, Im starting to become very confused about why hats and comfortable clothing keep coming up in the same breath as "bad hygiene".
It is possible to take a shower and then put on a hat. These things are not mutually exclusive.
Also, you sort of come off as a douche when you feel the need to point out that the people you consider "well adjusted members of society" wear overpriced ties and watches while playing Magic.

I later found out the majority of the fedora's and teenagers in cheap suiting were there for an extra prize. I don't think i am a douche nor am i trying to be, i am trying to paint a picture. there are a number of mid-20's "yuppie" types sitting next to a bunch of kids in prom tuxedos and fedoras, then a number of laid back younger teenagers.
2 of those stereotypes generally make the event a fun place where you get to play games you all did as children for the hell of it.
I think a common misconception is that FNM is a place to just go play magic. While that is obviously the purpose, there is also a tournament happening. That means people are going to compete. That means people are going to take it seriously.

It does not excuse dressing like you have no sense of taste or style, or holding to the worst of nerd steryeotypes, that as soon as we can move away from, the better.
Also, the sooner the Fedora is left to old men, the 1920s, and security goons for authoritarian regimes, the better.

Hey now, I sometimes wear Fedora's, cannot judge people by that. Although mine actually come from a fitted hat store and cost a bit more than I should have spent.
Generally speaking, my LGS environment is pretty damn friendly and welcoming. The only deterrents are the occasional lack of deodorant and this one kid who never shuts the **** up and sings loudly and badly all the time. We have 10 year olds that act more mature than that punk.

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.
I am getting pretty tired of the 33 year old guy at my place screaming about mana screw during his or after his matches. It happens.
Or people who think they are funny so they interject into conversations that aren't theirs or disrupt business at the register.
A lot of LGS' don't seem to tame down even the most obnoxious players or risk losing players, I had to pretty much set straight some 15 year old kid that I wasn't going to sit idly by as he used a homosexual slur over and over.
OMG thank you for saying what I've been thinking every time I see a fedora.
You know what else gets me? The three-piece suits. Can't even be two piece, has to have the Mad Men-esque vest. Those go with the fedora.
God, that to. Every last one of them I have met has been a completely insufferable douchebag.

I am a horribly judgmental person. So actually, yeah I probably will. Currently my evidence of people who can rock a fedora who are not old is literally zero.

So you are saying that the way a person dresses is hurting the game? How does that make any sense. People are free to dress however they want. They have no obligation to conform to your "style".
I take it I shouldn't come to the lgs as a male with hair to my waist?
You are literally suggesting that the clothes a worn by the playerbase has anything to do with anyone's enjoyment of the game. With the obvious exception of clothing with potentially offensive messages, this just seems like petty judgmental thinking.

The suit-and-fedora-on-a-young-guy look isn't an outfit you see often. When you come into the store and see a ton of people dressed in an unusual style, it can create an unwelcoming image. Kind of like when you walk into a club or party where everyone dresses completely different from you, it says, "there's an in crowd and you're not part of it."
But that doesn't mean everyone should dress up for FNM in skinny jeans and flannels. Just that, y'know, competitive Magic players have a subculture and it'd be great if people acted more friendly to people who aren't obvious insiders to that subculture to counteract potential negative first impressions.
I am a horribly judgmental person. So actually, yeah I probably will. Currently my evidence of people who can rock a fedora who are not old is literally zero.
So you are openly admitting you are a jerk, and likely a problem person in your own LGS who does not realize it.

Cannot fathom walking into an establishment and feeling unwelcome due to the clothes people are wearing. Perhaps I just don't have a proper perspective to see the issue.
I have 3 LGSs in the area. 4 if you count the one 50 minutes away that my friend works at.
The local shops all have a distinct line dividing the 'casuals' versus the 'tryhards'. Both groups seem to avoid one another to the point you could host 2 events and people would be much happier.
The big part that keeps me away is the loud political, military, religious, or just people bashing. There is too much negativity there and honestly, most of these kids are just spouting what their parents said yesterday anyways. I'm here to play Magic. We can talk for hours about the card face change or how new sets are too good/bad, but let's keep the rest of it out of the game shop.

I definitely agree with this. Shops will want to market FNM as a "casual" event to draw in more customers, but it's as casual as an EDH tournament is "casual".
Most of my casual games happen somewhere other than a LGS.
The local shops all have a distinct line dividing the 'casuals' versus the 'tryhards'.
This divide has been around for years. Both groups want different things from the game. The shops don't want either group to leave because that's money out the door.

it's the sub-culture perpetuated for some weird reason (profit motivated) by WOTC and most gaming chains/stores. If they didn't pander to the small segment of society they might see sales go up. And i know these guys are taking social cues from WOTC/ game store marketing/ nerd culture to act this way.
Is Nerd/LGS/WOTC stereotype culture, actually killing magic? or driving consumers away from the game?

I should have clarified that I did not believe this was unique to my shop. Just that it kills the environment as a whole. Shop owners like casual players because they tend to buy more in the long run. Things like the FNM promos kept some people away just because they don't feel they have a real chance of winning one.
Honestly, I just wish I could attend FNM again.
