So my friends and I have been playing magic for a few years, and about that only thing that really stumps us sometimes is when it comes to the stack, and if/when/why an ability will still resolve.
Ex: I have Jhoira of the Ghitu on the field and use the ability to suspend a card. In response my opponent plays Terminateto kill it. Since that is on the stack first, why does Jhoira of the Ghitu ability still go through?
The way we learned when first beginning magic is this:
The reason your conclusion is wrong is because abilities actually exist independent of their sources (with a precious few exceptions, which are all spelled out on the card).
This is for the same reason that if I throw a grenade at you, and you shoot me afterwards, the grenade doesn't disappear in midair.
112.7a Once activated or triggered, an ability exists on the stack independently of its source. Destruction or removal of the source after that time won't affect the ability.
Edit in response to post below mine:
You are slightly incorrect. The ability will resolve, it's not countered. It just won't do any damage.
When ability is already on the stack it is too late to respond by killing source of the ability.
There are, however, several cases when this does work. For example Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician. If goblin will be blocked but killed in response to ability, controller of the goblin cannot satisfy "sacrifice" part of the ability and it will not resolve.

This is not how bans/unbans work. Its always the enabler that gets the ban, not the card that is being abused. If you would have Yawgmoths will + whatever cards - it would be Yawgs that would be banned. If you would have Stoneforge and batterskull - it would be stone who would be banned and that is exactly how it works. Furthermore, banning a card in order to unban a different card is a thought process that was and wont be never applied in practical means.
So basically what it is brought down to, is their is no way to stop an activated ability like this without a cancel or something else that specifically stops an activated ability correct? Whether it's paying mana for the ability, or tapping it to active the ability, it will still resolve?

Correct with only a few exceptions that not specifically on the card's Oracle text (see Parallax Wave for an example of what this looks like). Generally, though, it's a rule of thumb that abilities exist independent of their sources and removing the source won't affect the ability.
EDIT: Whoops, Parallax Wave doesn't work like that anymore. In that case, I can't think of any exceptions.

Yep, basically correct.
Do note that abilities aren't spells, so Cancel will do nothing.
You will need a Trickbind, or another "counter target ability" card

Our most current situation is this:
Jhoira of the Ghitu
Ex: I have Jhoira of the Ghitu on the field and use the ability to suspend a card. In response my opponent plays Terminateto kill it. Since that is on the stack first, why does Jhoira of the Ghitu ability still go through?
The way we learned when first beginning magic is this:
1)Use Jhoira of the Ghitu to suspend Flameblast Dragon
2)Response: Terminate Jhoira of the Ghitu
3:Response to Terminate: Use Jhoira of the Ghitu ability again which will resolve unless another removal spell is played.
Can anybody clear up specifically where we have gone wrong, as well as link me to the ruling in particular to clear it up as well.
This is for the same reason that if I throw a grenade at you, and you shoot me afterwards, the grenade doesn't disappear in midair.

When in doubt, call a judge.
Objectivist here. Hit me up to talk philosophy.
Frenetic Sliver is an exception.
