Just seems like way too much mana to invest on basically a tutor.
You need 10 mana to play it and Terferi. Getting FoW would be great but that's 3 cards to counter one.
Just seems like there are better cards for BUG.

Ok, the consensus seems to be that it doesn't have enough targets and / or is too mana intensive, which I agree with for the most part. Just throwing out ideas to see what people think.
Winged Coatl would be a decent target, I run it in my mimeoplasm deck
Also, surprisingly, Horizon Chimera has been pretty fun in my deck - the double evasion can go pretty far. It's tutorable with Mystical teachings, you can flash him in as a chump block, then next turn or so clone him with mimeoplasm with a thousand counters from whatever. The flying/trample combo might as well say unblockable.

I guess they make pretty good surprise blockers, but I don't think either of these have a high enough overall power level to make the cut in this deck. I mostly just use The Mimeoplasm as a high mana cost reanimate that I always have access to.
If I were to try out Careful Study, which of these looting spells do you guys think I should cut for it?
I was thinking that Compulsive Research, Careful Consideration, and Whispering Madness are probably the weakest options currently, although Memory Jar is certainly not as strong without Academy Ruins being in the deck.
Prophet of Kruphix + Havengul Lich seems like an awesome thing that this deck could do, but I don't think there is room for it in the looting + reanimator version, especially since Havengul usually doesn't do a whole lot on his own.
I feel Hermit Druid is too inconsistent to use. Other people could grab things from your GY. Impulse can probably go. All of the things you said you were going to remove I agree with.

This way I've completely shifted away from a combo deck.
Looks to me like you're making your deck into more of a stax deck. That's not the route that I am going to go with my list, but it's certainly an interesting choice, and it's probably stronger. I guess I would characterize my list as more of a reanimator control deck than anything else, especially if I keep this package of looting spells and extra reanimate type cards.

Yes it definitely will have a stax-ish feel to it, but I don't want to dedicate any slots to specific stax cards. Things that tax for creatures attacking, etc.
I want to blow out any plays possibly while coming out ahead on my resources, the only problem I'm running into are ramp scenarios, as that will be my hardest competition. The good thing about our decks is they don't need to be soley GY dedicated. We can still hardcast things and use a decent amount of removal to stop major threats all while advancing our mana position.
I'm also debating on including Myojin of Night's reach and Volrath's Shapshifter
and possibly that 8CMC black guy that draws a card on each upkeep. That is if I decide to keep the survival package.
The thing with Myojin is we actually get the divinity counter when we use our general or Volrath's shapeshifter. The only bad thing about him is he isn't in the cards as a T2-T3 play as consistently as other degenerate things.
That is unless we include Lion's Eye Diamond. But that strategy is too all in for me as a counterspell discards your entire hand.
Think maybe this question was missed, so I'll ask it again. To those of you who run the looting spells, which ones do you consider to be the best? The ones I am running right now are:
I may want to add Careful Study, but I'm not sure if it's better than any of the ones I am running right now. I was thinking that Compulsive Research, Careful Consideration, and Whispering Madness are probably the weakest options currently, although Memory Jar is certainly not as strong without Academy Ruins being in the deck.
Also thinking I may want to put Skithiryx back in since I like having the alternate infect kill and I have a few more options to get him to 10+ power now with the additional fatties.
Did some playtesting against the AI on forge and this deck absolutely stomped my other decks without any trouble at all.

Careful study is the best one imo. It enables T2 shenanigans. Counter back up mana is likely to be available as well. Fact or Fiction can be done EOT, but there's no garunete you'll get a fatty (still a good card, just not my style.)
And you only need to loot 1 card when a fatty is in your hand. This makes Hapless researcher and read the runes a less mana intensive option.

That's basically what I figured about Careful Study. How do you feel about Whispering Madness vs Careful Consideration vs Compulsive Research? Does the potential instant speed of Consideration make it preferable, or would you go with one of the other two, assuming I am only going to run 1 or 2 out of those 3.
Hapless Researcher seems kind of meh to me since it only lets you dig one card deep, but I can see why you would want it if you're going for a reanimated fatty on turn 2. Also the pun in the flavor text is just awful.

Not a fan of the four mana ones. I'd rather be reanimating big creatures than playing whispering madness or FoF but those 3 mana ones and espically careful study are real good.

Hapless Researcher pitches to SotF. Another reason why I don't run 4mana pitch spells is again, I'm a proactive deck. I'm not playing control and tapping out is what I'm doing most of the time.
I think in a more control-oriented style of build, then FoF becomes superior to careful study. It's really the context of the deck.
Frantic Search is such a beast
1 - its instant
2 - its *free*
3 - its banned in legacy ( that should be a good hint )
4 - dont forget the power of (fixing mana) mid-late game if needed
how .. well you only have 1 green producing land .. tap it .. for something other then frantic reasearch .. and untap it so here goes your second mana you didnt have
and .. last but not least
5- it can actualy ramp you if you have a budget list .. like me and you are using dimir aqueductgolgari rot farm
oh .. and the card is 25 cent !

today is always the best day
My ETB mimeoplasm deck doesnt run any of the Looting Effects. We play french mulligan rules, so if I draw one of the ~7 beefy guys I usually throw them back anyways.
The deck has the ability to have brokenly accelerated starts, but generally it plays a lot more like your classic BUG Rock deck.
Find a way slowly gain card advantage and control the board while doing so.
Early game consists of getting a draw engine or consistent land drops.
Usually through SDT and Oracle or LFTL and Fetchlands. It really depends on the opening hand for which direction I'll go. The deck plays 11 tutors and is full of huge and complicated decision trees. Sometimes theyre really obvious, othertimes they're pretty convoluted.
@Lands
I run a lot of basics and a lot of colorless producing utility lands.
Most of them are pretty obvious. Academy ruins lets me make dumb piles with intuition, and recur oblivion stone indefinitely. Riptide lab protects prophet of kruphix and creates card advantage with Archaeomancer- usually with Cyclonic Rift. Phyrexian Tower is probably the most cuttable, but it can be great early game ramp after an ETB dude has done his thing. Or dodging tuck. Or turning on skullclamp. or denying lifelink. If I change the manabase it'll probably be to include more fetches or filterlands. (btw, filterlands are dumb w/ Mana Reflection out)
@Mana Accel
Pretty standard ETB dude ramp package. Alot of people dont like Yavimaya Dryad. Hes dumb in this deck. Cast mimeoplasm as a dryad early on to get in for some forestwalk damage. He also guarantees that you'll get SoFeFa triggers. All your guys are easily poddable. Ive only been playing vorinclez for a few weeks but hes an allstar. In EDH mana doublers are king- so halving your opponents mana at the same time is pretty strong too.
@card draw
Find one of these early game and make it stick. Try not to be greedy and leave the extra ones in your hand incase of a massive board wipe- which might be your doing - you probably got your moneys worth at that point though.
@Counterpells
I only play SEVEN counterspells. In my opinion they're the best EDH counterspells. We dont play enough tempo or LD type effects to really be able to play the "or pay X" counterspells. We need our counterspells to be hard counters that we can depend on. I dont often leave mana up for counterspells all the time. Counterspells in this deck are for protecting your win condition or stopping theirs. Unless they'll win or get too far ahead of you from the spell, I usually dont counter something. That said, once you get out Eternal Witness, Mystic Snake, and Seedborn Muse you can go counter happy with Ghostly Flicker in hand.
@Tutors
In BUG we have access to all the best tutors, so we play them.
Entomb is incredibly synergistic with most of our deck. Whether its find a creature for mimeoplasm, get lftl or a utility to go with it, setup skullclamp food, or get a creature/artifact for volrath's stronghold/academy ruins.
Mystical usually has 4 targets early game, Intuition, natural order, LFTL or flash. It really depends on what you have in your hand. If you dont have anything particularly good in your hand you get intuition.
Intuition is broken in Mimeoplasm. You will always be able to create unfair piles because of your general.
Most decks have to do things like "E Wit, Regrowth, <card I need>".
We just have to get eternal witness, and can grab 2 cards we may need.
Even if they put witness and the card you want more than the other in the yard, you can just cast mimeo as witness.
An example of Piles
intuition for Witness, Flash, Sylvan Primordial
They give you flash, you just cast mimeo as primordial
they give you witness, same thing
They give you Primordial, and you cast mimeos as witness getting flash.
(or just hardcast the primordial, then sac him and then cast mimeo as him, you get it.)
What Im trying to stress is that Intuition is basically Gifts Ungiven for us.
Survival is survival, find a creature that creates card advantage and stick 'em. We have enough recursion and card draw that not having genesis or a 'squee' effect rarely hurts us. (however, Krovikan Horror exists for those who like to be heavily reliant on SotF).
Natural Order usually finds vorinclex or sylvan P. Depends how many players there are usually.
Theres been a lot of Discussion about BPod lately. I dont play Bpod to scale up a beautifully crafted chain of creatures. I mean, I can, and it exists, but I dont. I play Bpod to find Prophet of Kruphix or Seedborn Muse. My normal Chain goes from a 3cmc dude to either Oracle or Solemn. Depending mostly on the number of lands in my hand or if i have SDT in play. Next Turn I grab Prophet. If I dont have the card draw to be able to really profit from prophet Ill sac him next turn to get C. Sphinx out then mimeoplasm out Prophet.
Chord of Calling is great in an ETB deck. A lot of the time we have a good about of 1/1 dorks sitting around waiting to block.
Rune-Scarred Demon makes a t2 flash into a worse DT, which isnt always as bad as you might think. I mostly play him to set up lock outs with Tooth and Nail.
Depending on the number of players at the table, Tooth and Nail either sets up a beatface wincon or softlock wincon.
If I have alchemists refuge on the board, T&N will often get seedborn muse and eternal witness getting back T&N. Then we pass turn, wait till the next turn. If theres something to counter we T&N for Mystic Snake and Rune-Scarred. Rune scarred demon grabs Ghostly Flicker.
Now we can counter and DT whatever we want.
Sure, we could T&N for an instawin combo. I dont play those, and those cards are next to useless outside of their combo.
@Removal
Maze of Ith is too good to not run against voltron strategies.
Nature's Claim and Beast Within answer just about anything for low mana cost. There are always problem artifacts and enchantments. Its important to correctly access threats with these and not use them too soon.
I feel 4 sweepers is the right number. All of them are recurable, so I dont hesitate to wipe the board as often as I feel fit.
OStone and academy ruins
Cyclonic Rift Archaeomancer Riptide Labratory
Damnation Archaeomancer/Witness Phyrexian Reclaimation
Deed Volrath's Stronghold Witness.
Often with Deed I'll steal someones Suntitan w/ mimeo and blow it for 5 each turn.
@Recursion
Phyrexian Reclamation is one of the most underrated EDH cards. It lets you dodge GY hate, and make sure that EOT you have a use for any leftover mana. Against mill its ridiculous, against aggro you'll always have a chump blocker while still being able to further your board state w/ ETB triggers.
LFTL lets you consistently hit land drops with fetches, and makes sure that you get your full use out of oracle of mul daya.
Archaeomancer is probably one of my more odd choices. Eternal Witness is subject to being exiled quite often in this deck, and we want to have a backup. Knowing we have redundant pieces for our soft lock lets you play more aggressively early on in the game.
@clones/clamp-ables
Bloodghast and Reassembling skeleton serve an important role. Everyone knows how good they are will skullclamp, so I'll skip that bit.
Bloodghast turns phyrexian tower into ancient tomb early on.
Reassembling Skeleton and the tower makes for the best chump blocker ever.
Both can get in for extra damage here and there, can carry Sword of Feast and Famine over and over through board wipes. They serve as extra dudes to tap for Chord of calling. Most importantly they can make Craterhoof Triggers lethal when they otherwise wouldnt have been.
Clones- We play a lot of powerful ETB dudes. They're good to copy early game to progress our ramp plan, late game they let us chain craterhoof triggers, or copy Ewit so we can continue casting T&N.
A lot of people have cut Rite of Replication from their lists, t can be such a huge blow out though I havent cut it yet.
@Utility/Wincons
Flash is pretty standard. Can lead to early game blowouts or late game shenanigans.
Ghostly Flicker is another odd choice. We're an ETB deck, lets abuse those triggers. Changing a clone(or mimeoplasm) to something different, dodging removal, or just getting more ramp out little etb dudes early game are all "good." Sure, those things can be underwhelming, but at its best ghostly flicker is a combo piece that wins you the game. Before it becomes that game winning piece its still not a dead draw.
Sword of Feast and Famine. Still pretty new to the deck, but I really like being able to untap my lands and makes ETB dudes more useful early game.
Seedborn Muse and Prophet of Kruphix.
I usually grab Prophet of the muse unless I have Scroll Rack and Sol ring out.
The flash is really relevant. Your board state looks a lot less of needing "a board wipe" during your opponents turn if you flash everything in EOT.
Avenger of Zendikar
We ramp, but we dont ramp that much. This guy is basically our last out when our other winconditions have been exhausted. He also makes for a huge crater trigger off of T&N.
Craterhoof Behemoth
This guy is my wincon of choice. As mimeoplasm he has haste and can get in for a quick 21 commander. He compliments our plan of playing a bunch of 1/1 and 2/2 ETB dorks. With 7 mana we can cast mimeoplasm as him pumping our dudes then phant image him for double buff and swing lethal at someone.
With only 2-3 dudes on your side and craterhoof + clones you can often wipe out the entire table.
Cards Ive played in the past: Leyline of Anticipation
I love this card. But early game its the first thing to die, and late game I usually already have prophet or alchemist refuge online. Trinket Mage
He'll probably be back at some point. Its just a question of what to cut. Expedition Map and Sylvan Scrying
Both great cards and tutors. We already run 11 tutors though. Acidic Slime and Krosan Grip
Trying out Nature's Claim and FoW in their respective spots right now.
I really like grip, but the 1cmc and 0 cmc answers are bigger game changers. Disciple of Bolas
I liked the lifegain and draw, but usually I ended up saccing my general for him. He so much more broken in my Chainer deck. Lord of Extinction
I love huge beaters, but this guy is usually just overkill Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir
I can see this guy making a comeback. If my meta turns more blue he definitely will. Maelstrom Pulse
great against token decks, best sorcery speed removal in EDH. I cut it for mana drain. Victimize
Was basically Ghostly Flicker #2. Not as good w/o Leyline in the deck, but could lead to some very broken plays.
@Throst: My biggest question about your list is the lands. Do you feel like 34 is consistently enough? I'm hesitant to even go down to 36 lands since I want to make sure I am always hitting my land drops early on. I haven't run Tooth and Nail in a while, but it is a card I could see adding it in again for the potential to recast it several times with Seedborn Muse + Alchemist's Refuge. My only real concern is that you need 12 mana to pull that off, which is an awful lot if you don't have Vorinclex out.
Not a huge fan of Whispering Madness or Careful Consideration either, but I think Compulsive Research might be the weakest one because of the sorcery speed, whereas Consideration is an instant and Madness has awesome synergy with Notion Thief.

Do you play French mulligan rule? I always throw back everything over 3 mana. I'll keep one 4cc thing if its a bpod, oracle, or solemn. I rarely have a problem with it, maybe one in every 8 games it'll bite me in the ass. Just mulligan aggressively. That said if the first mull took me to six id probably up the land count. Also, I dont play any draw x discard x, so I don't have a way to filter out extraneous lands I draw. Grab lftl early and there's no problem. Late game its dumb good with forbid and scroll rack anyhow.
I don't feel like 12 mana is that hard to get to. How many turn do your games usually last? I usually get 2-3 ramp dorks a game out, and 1-3 sylvan primordial triggers. Make sure you clone him as soon as he hits the field! The deck can be very attrition based, so long games aren't too unheard of. That said, my games have gotten shorter and in less need of T&N since I added the two praetors and NO back in.
I've yet to actually cast notion thief, but I see his potential. Its just a question of if I prefer him or memory plunder more.
Not a huge fan of Whispering Madness or Careful Consideration either, but I think Compulsive Research might be the weakest one because of the sorcery speed, whereas Consideration is an instant and Madness has awesome synergy with Notion Thief.
It just depends if you want to tap out on turn three or if you'd rather wait a turn for eot draw.
Personally I prefer the latter. I play the card in my tempo/control 1v1 deck and love it.
I know I just added in Careful Study, but I think either that, Whispering Madness, or Memory Jar should get cut for Frantic Search, which I finally had a chance to pick up today. I really like the instant speed looting since it let's me take advantage of Seedborn Muse and Prophet of Kruphix more while also interacting very nicely with my top of the library tutors. Also using it EOT and then untapping and reanimating a bomb creature is pretty nice and definitely harder to stop since they can't see it coming. I may end up taking out both Whispering Madness and Careful Study to make a slot for something else. I don't really have the full package to abuse Tooth and Nail, but might it be worth running anyway? I still have Witness, Seedborn, Prophet, Metamorph, etc to do very powerful things with it.
What's the verdict on filter lands? Twilight Mire, Sunken Ruins, Flooded grove
I plan on cutting more lands when I finish up the 9 fetches for the deck and I was wondering if they would be better to cut than the basics.

1 - its instant
2 - its *free*
3 - its banned in legacy ( that should be a good hint )
4 - dont forget the power of (fixing mana) mid-late game if needed

dont use your car if you can bike!
today is always the best day
The deck has the ability to have brokenly accelerated starts, but generally it plays a lot more like your classic BUG Rock deck.

@Lands
(btw, filterlands are dumb w/ Mana Reflection out)
@Mana Accel
@card draw
Find one of these early game and make it stick. Try not to be greedy and leave the extra ones in your hand incase of a massive board wipe- which might be your doing - you probably got your moneys worth at that point though.
@Counterpells
@Tutors
@Removal
@Recursion
@clones/clamp-ables
@Utility/Wincons
Cards Ive played in the past:
Leyline of Anticipation
I love huge beaters, but this guy is usually just overkill
Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir
I can see this guy making a comeback. If my meta turns more blue he definitely will.
Maelstrom Pulse
great against token decks, best sorcery speed removal in EDH. I cut it for mana drain.
Victimize
Was basically Ghostly Flicker #2. Not as good w/o Leyline in the deck, but could lead to some very broken plays.

Compulsive Research -> Careful Study
Not a huge fan of Whispering Madness or Careful Consideration either, but I think Compulsive Research might be the weakest one because of the sorcery speed, whereas Consideration is an instant and Madness has awesome synergy with Notion Thief.

No.
Straight up mill does nothing to the board state or anything to our hand. We're not a combo deck.
It just depends if you want to tap out on turn three or if you'd rather wait a turn for eot draw.
Personally I prefer the latter. I play the card in my tempo/control 1v1 deck and love it.

I plan on cutting more lands when I finish up the 9 fetches for the deck and I was wondering if they would be better to cut than the basics.
