The Elder Dragons are 8 cmc vs Gosta's 7 [/nitpicking]
Anyway, the legendaries from Legends were based heavily on characters from the designers D&D campaign, which is why they have this very weird mashup of colors and abilities. Also, they really didn't have much of a guideline back then as to a sensible color pie or spell/creature balance. Alpha/Beta + Arabian Nights + Antiquities were the only precedents.
Lol, you're right, they are 8. That makes this guy totally reasonable at 7
You're right about the origins of those Legends. As a former D&D player, this is one reason why I liked the original legendary creatures, even when they sucked.
Well, he is a Human Warrior now, so you can leverage some value out of that. But you are really going to be scraping the bottom of the barrel looking for reasons to justify him over other options. If you playing in a really low power environment scraping together a deck with Gosta Dirk and a bunch of Kjeldorans could be pretty cool.
It's probably not worth trying to combo with Stormtide Leviathan and land type changing effects to make everyone else a juicier target.
*Shuffling up a :symu::symg: deck, into which I just put Cold-Eyed Selkie. Looks across the table and sees that someone is playing Gosta Dirk as his commander.*

I believe they also planned to include characters from folktales and myths like Robin Hood and Hercules. Thankfully they nipped that one in the bud. Hercules would probably have ended up a 6/6 vanilla creature for 3GGRR.

Gosta Dirk is pretty cool, he's not too strong or anything like that. He looks like he's from Skyrim, his Sword looks really cool, he has a makeshift doublet made from a whole shield.
Most importantly, he's an old dude and he's not a wizard or a druid; He's a warrior! One that fights for justice and law, rather than blood! Making strides against MTG prejudices there.

The funny thing here is, if I saw someone pull him out. My first question would be if they are running a ridiculous combo deck in disguise. I think the likelihood of seeing him as a competitive deck in disguise is higher than seeing him as a bad deck.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.

That is probably a fair assumption. What new player would even know that set existed, let alone have cards from it?

not to hijack the thread or anything, but did you know there is a card with type Human Soldier Warrior? What would he fight for?

EDH decks in cockatrice, look me up under hoborobot
I think its funny that he is from Legends and has never been reprinted, yet he is only $3 mid on tcgplayer. I guess that's a testament to how useful he is. Super sweet art though.

The reserved list isn't about good cards.
I have one and have never considered playing it.
Folks shouldn't dismiss all the legends from Legends, a few are very nice.

All the kids who played the blues
Would learn my licks with a bottle neck slide
From a Commander standpoint, I don't like him. His cost is too high, his body too small, and his effect to minimal. As a common, he could potentially find a home in a Pauper list.
From a design standpoint, I think he's well-made. He also reminds me of the dogbeasts from Ghostbusters.
That pretty much sums up the case against this particular guy. Too high cost for too little effect, and he's totally outclassed by other choices at the same CMC.

I have a hard time believing that when things like Ishi-ishi, Akki Crackshot and Pang Tong, “Young Phoenix” exist. At least Gosta is a 4/4 first strike.

I forgot about that.
Now I want to make it again, with Lord Magnus for a 3rd player.

Lord Magnus clearly is too powerful for this grouping.
Gosta Dirk.. man I miss Legends, I was just starting out then. Hazezon Tamar, Rasputin Dreamweaver, Gwendlyn di Corci, Angus Mackenzie, or Adun Oakenshield he ain't. That's for sure.
