Titan Games has begun their Commander League, which runs every Tuesday night starting at 7:00pm. The season lasts for the entire month. The buy-in is $5 each session, all of which goes into the prize pool. At the end of the season, the sum is awarded in the form of store credit to the top 4-8 players in points (depending on total number of players, almost always top 8 players).
Games start at 7:00pm and last until store closing at 10:30pm, at which point we will go to turns. Whenever possible, we play in three person pods, but shift to ensure even pods, so games can sometimes be four or five players. Each pod is chosen on a random basis, and pods cannot play multiple games if they finish before another pod (this prevents players from getting more opportunities than other players). After 1 hour 15 minutes the first game will go to turns in order to ensure that everyone has time to play a second game that night at the minimum.
We follow all official Commander rules, to include ban list and mulligans. We do not allow proxies unless you have the physical card with you, although we do allow gold border. You are not locked into a particular general, and we encourage multiple decks. Duplicate generals in the same game is permissible, although we try to discourage it. Any strategy/archetype is acceptable, but be forewarned that (friendly) grudges can get formed and there can be long-term repercussions.

Chasm (-2) - Eliminating over half of a players lands (other than your own).
My league follows a similar set of guidelines, except anyone who's dominating a game usually ends up points-farming, getting the max points for the game and letting everyone else do stuff. Also it's a penalty rather than a bonus to put more than six extra cards in your hand a turn.
However, because of the anti-chasm rule, my Azusa deck is damn near unbeatable. I can't put more than six cards in my hand, sure, but I can Genesis Wave for 9001 right when the kill timer goes off. I can't play a turn one Sol Ring, but I can play a turn 1 Mana Crypt (though you seem to have that covered, lol, good jerb), etc.
All I'm saying is tread lightly when figuring out the penalties, or someone will abuse them.

We actually swapped out the points farming dookie after last week. We originally had it as "just there for the colors (not playing your general), but felt that it was too subjective a penalty because it's not always the best play to cast your general just to avoid a dookie. The penalty for points farming is in place to prevent games from stalling and if I recall correctly, it won't be a penalty if you're not in the top 3.
Looks like a lot of fun! Would be great to have something like this around my area.
It also seems like a very good idea that you make some of the points random each season
so that players cannot game the system too much and so that there aren't a million things to keep track of. There doesn't seem to be any penalty for comboing out if you wait until the 6th turn to do it. Have you thought about a "The cheese stands alone" type rule where if one person combos out early, then they get their winpoints but the rest of the table keeps playing for second place?
The one points condition that I don't fully understand is:
"Busy Boy (+1) - Shuffle your library three or more times during one turn"
To me, this actually seems like a bad thing because they're looking through their
deck, tutoring etc. Shuffling also slows down the game, especially with big EDH decks. It just seems like rewarding players for wasting everyones' time while they shuffle. I would remove this one or even make it a penalty to tutor 3x a turn myself.
Whenever I'm playing, if I search for a land or something, I try to do it last so that I can pass the turn while I shuffle and not waste anyone's time.
Also, the chasm rule seems really harsh. It prettymuch makes LD totally not an option. One Armageddon would set you back -6 points in a single game. While you say "Any strategy/archetype is acceptable," the points really makes even mild LD like ruination nonviable whereas a turn 3 blood moon would be perfectly fine. I would maybe suggest tweaking this a bit.
There's a few points I don't agree with, and I'm going to talk with the organizer and possibly make some changes for the next season. I didn't have much initial input with the league, and am simply managing this thread, but I'm trying to build an environment which rewards players for coming out to play and having fun, while preventing people from gaming the system.
Seems like an awesome idea for a commander league. The points thing is very nice, but I agree that being a "busy boy" should be a penality. My only question is: how do you keep track of all the points? I think it's difficult to look at all the rules every time you're gonna do something for see if your action have any repercussion.
However, every time I saw a league like that, I feel a little bad for never had the possibility to be in one :/

The guy running it has the current points on a sheet of paper and we tally up after each game.
I print the rules on a score sheet with copies for the players in each game to look at while playing. There's a balance I'm still working on for this league since each one is so short. The one I run at Alternate Worlds is 3 months long, whereas this one at Titan is about 1 month at a time. As for the exceedingly long list of points, they rotate every month, with only about 10 in use per month. This one I'm still trying to get the kinks worked out for a balance between playing to win prizes versus just playing for fun. While the main goal is to have fun, I think part of the fun is seeing the interesting plays people make that they normally wouldn't just to grab an extra point or two.
What would happen if multiple players in a pod decided to the game the system?
I'm assuming more arbitrary rules would be put in place to attempt to stop it. After of course more players would continue to find new loopholes. A lovely cycle.

This was one of the reasons that we added the farming dookie. We also use the revolving point system so that it is harder to tune a deck that can farm and win. In our group there isn't any player who is so hellbent on getting points that they have altered their deck around it. I suppose if that becomes a problem then we'll have to address it, but what Jivan is proposing is something inherent to the nature of Commander, not just a league or tournament.
Edit: @ Ophidian Eye - I may have misunderstood what you asked. If multiple players were colluding in order to get first and second place, we would act appropriately, and if it is determined that they were, I'd hope they'd be disqualified. Again, we have a pretty good group, so I don't foresee this being a problem.
No love for Time Stretch I see.
Well, at least there's not arbitrary infect rule.
So, just wondering: If someone plays Ruination and blows up half of someone's lands it's a penalty?
I don't really think it's their fault if someone is playing a greedy mana base.
(This is coming from someone who plays a very greedy mana base.)

If someone is running all nonbasics, Ruination is indeed a dookie. And with two decks that like to take all the turns, that dookie saddens me too.
In an effort to keep things simple, points do not take special circumstances into account (like mana rocks and chasm). I'm trying to keep thing relatively similar between the two leagues, but some things need to be tuned differently, like dookies and point values. I'm willing to allow a little bit more farming on the longer league, but awarded more points per win on the shorter league for example. It's a balance, and I'm still working that out a little on the Titan league. I'm open to input, but there will remain a certain amount of farming allowed. Also if anyone has suggestions for dookies or points to add to the rotation, let me know. I pulled my list from 6 different leagues I found posted online, and use the same master list for both leagues.

Yes, I was wondering about collusion. I played in a points league once and two players managed to each get an infinite amount of points because neither would scoop and they had ways of making it so the game would never end. They couldn't be disqualified because we had no rule to disqualify players from colluding in this manner.
If you have a good group of players though, that's awesome. I'm just always hesitant when it comes down to decisions like the stalling dookie. Not everyone has the same opinion of what constitutes unnecessarily long, and how much does a player's reputation precede him when he sits down? Something like a turn clock could work, with exceptions being made on a case by case basis when the player can demonstrate he or she is doing all that is in within their power to take their turn in a timely fashion.
Some players will always think an aspect is unfair because of the differences in judgment, no matter what measures are in place in to prevent these arguments from taking place. I guess as long as everyone is having a good time and falls somewhere in the ol' boxplot of expectations then woo (not an ironic woo, but a genuine woo).

There isn't anything currently in place to deal with that scenario since it hasn't come up. The closest we have are the 2 stalling dookies, and if it comes to my attention that this is happening I'll end the game. I don't really see it being an issue with the group we have honestly. We're there to have fun, not just win points, so it's not as cutthroat as it could be.

I think what contributed most to the "seriousness" of the league was that the winner was awarded an entire box for winning (a practice that couldn't continue as less and less people turned out to play because of the domination of a specific player).

Well, with an average of 6 players a week, for 4 weeks, that's at least $120 in store credit to be split among 3 players. So there's certainly incentive to build a deck that can win and maybe farm a point or two, but as Jason said, except for some jerk who builds tryhard Karador and Dakkon decks, we have a group that's there to play.
