In the latest episode of the Eh Team, ScottyMac mentioned that there were rumors that the Beta client will get scrapped and Wizards will start from scratch on a new MTGO client.
I was curious if anyone else has heard anything like this.

Hearthstone must be cutting into their market pretty good. I know that still in beta Hearthstone viewers on twitch dwarf the number of Magic Online viewers. That has to drastically cut into new players coming to the game.
I am on the wagon of don't tease me. No way they throw away all that money to build the v4 beta. I really don't think they have figured out that the game and the R&D has been fully holding up Magic Online.
I get the same vibe when I see postings for closed beta testers.
Hopefully they scrap the current beta and get something better going. And I say that as someone who has been using the beta client for close to 9 months now.
They need a client that's compatible with macs, ipads and ideally could be played from a web browser. Till I see one of those, they're not doing enough.

I wish the comparisons between the two would stop. They're vastly different games. MTGO is to Hearthstone what LoL is to Starcraft 2. LoL and Hearthstone may steal a few players, but they're players who are so bad at their respective games and so unlikely to spend money on MTGO or become a pro quality in SC2 that I wouldn't think many people care. Hearthstone has no depth whatsoever, just like LoL takes a tiny fraction of the skill required to be good at SC2.
Anyway, they just need a quick compromise before they start from scratch. Some of the ideas in the beta are much better than the current client and could easily be adapted to the current client's layout.

No one has said that hearthstone is a better game than mtg. But you know what hearthstone has going for it? The interface is about one million times better than both of the clients available to mtgo users right now. Are they different? Yes I would hope so otherwise lawsuits would be going on currently. Has less depth? Gameplay wise that may be true but in terms of inferface the depth is like comparing a pond to an ocean where hearthstone is an ocean and mtgo is a pond.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
An updated version of MTGO that isn't capable of running on at least tablets? Forget about it. I'm not just saying that as a disgruntled consumer, I'm saying that these are the very real circumstances under which developers live now. You don't spend massive money on developing a new client that runs only on PC. That means slowly losing your customer base over the next years.
If the push towards tablets was going to cost them customer base, I imagine the constant mismanagement and crashes over the past ten years would have as well. I mean, what is tablet incompatibility when the program barely worked on PC. People underestimate how much crap the MTGO player base will take
And the beta has not been scrapped. It is getting a big reworking from a outside team. I tested the new build a little on closed beta, it is NOTICEABLY more responsive, like scrolling through large collections like mine(300k) it doesn't lag or stutter. I can't say it will ever be good, but it is certainly improved.
Yeah, I expect them to invest more ressources now, but why would they scrap V4 as a whole? I think the biggest issue with V4 is, that it does a few great things, and a few bad things, which is a very bad status for a new client (since well, generally speaking you want to improve bad things and keep the good stuff). I can play fine on both clients, but it's definitely bad for new players since both clients are pretty unintuitive (especially compared to heartstone for instance).
That being said I generally like V4 so if they finally get it to work properly I'll be happy.
Nah the problem with V4 is structural unfortunately. The underlying technology is not made for MTGO style applications WPF isn't made to be "fast"
I put in an application for closed beta. Nothing gets improved by kvetching on forums. I'd rather be in the group that's moving things forward.
Heh, what makes you think they have listened to the people in closed Beta. Surely you notice no one is happy with V4 We have been giving feedback in closed beta for years now.

A comic about the world's most addictive game, Magic: The Gathering.
