Oh god I want one of those so bad, especially if they have the Halo: Reach replica version. Though I wouldn't mind having a normal one though
Although I've said they're cool and all, they don't really make too much sense outside of the hands of Gurkhas, or at least the those in the Gurkha Regiment in Singapore.
What's really, really, really scary are news reports of absolute psychos who hack up people with machetes, as in the case of the fella in the Woolwich attack (which is only one case among many worldwide).
Again, while they may be useful, being a normal human being is critical to using blades or any sharp instruments properly.
Of course, kendo and shinais are vastly different from combat and swords.
Besides, everyone knows that kendo is essentially actually a not-so-novel means of inducing a concussion and brain damage.
The helmet and the bamboo sticks go a long way towards preventing concussions.
And there's a misconception here. You're not supposed to hit hard with the stick. You slice with the blade. That's why people are taught to keep a strong grip, but a fairly limp wrist.

Why would you be prepared for something like that?
But, I disagree that practical appeal isn't obvious. Blades are very useful - opening packages, cutting off loose threads, things of that sort. And if you have a knife like you and I do - seatbelt cutter and glassbreaker, I presume - then that also helps you get out of such an accident. I also like knives because when I can't carry my Sig, it's self-defense. If I got kidnapped (unlikely, but still) then I could cut through my bindings, or if I get dropped in the middle of the woods, then I at least have a tool.
Knives are good.
This. I'm a big fan of firearms, but except for some VERY rare cases firearms serve only as implements of destruction. A knife has the advantage of being both an all-around handy tool in everyday life and an exceptionally deadly weapon assuming you have time to draw it. I've never even drawn my knife for the purposes of self-defense, but it was comforting to know I had it when some guy threatened to kick my ass as I walked out of my dojo a few months ago.

So, as I mentioned earlier I have one of these. The one I have is actually limited edition. It's one of my favorite knives, but, until recently, I felt bad using and abusing it because the Snody Benchmade-HK Axis line was discontinued and, if something happened to it, it couldn't be replaced. Well, yesterday, I acquired its big brother. Behold the coolest folding knife in the history of folding knives!

That's a sexy knife. I'm not fond of the grip style, but I would totally carry that.
Just got it in the mail today. It's pretty big, like, 3.4 inch blade and well over 4 ounces big. That said, it's built like a tank. I'm going to carry it for a few weeks to get the hang of it, but afterwards I think I'll switch back to my 943. I plan to reserve this one for when I'm doing military stuff and/or if I'm going to an area where I may want a blade more suited for defense.

About the same size as my paramilitary. 3.42in blade much lighter than yours, though.
I got my new strop in the mail. Sharp, sharp knives.
Blades are awesome, but I need them to be functional and cool. I have these 2 that have custom sheathes attaching to my molle combat vest. It's an either or, not both.
This Tomahawk is extremely versatile for many jobs and is great for wilderness Survival. http://www.gerbergear.com/Tactical/Gear/Downrange-Tomahawk_30-000792
It is very expensive, but I have used a lot and it is very durable. Its great for making traps and snares when your pocket knife is needed for eating/skinning.
For trips in the bush, I love this machete. http://www.bladehq.com/item--Lion-Steel-MCKF-Golok-M5S--7604. It's not to long and the blade is wide enough to not wiggle (cheap machete's do this bad). Holds an edge great, but needs to be oiled frequently to fight rust.
Fixed blade knives I use- SOG seal pup, K-Bar TDI large blade, CRKT M16-13z, 5.11 boot knife, and benchmade McHenry & Williams standard blade.
Nice. You really like Spyderco. I had a few (3) and found they grind down when sharpening faster than other companies. Steel is awesome and holds an edge, but it shrinks sharpening quick.

I do like spyderco.
I think it depends what steel your knives are. If you get something in ZDP-183 or something pretty hard on the rockwell, you shouldn't have to sharpen it much.
VG-10 is pretty good, it sharpens up very easy, and holds an edge for a decent time, with good corrosion resistance.

You misunderstand me. I am speaking of the material ground away to maintain sharpness and edge. I have a belt sander, antique wet stones (I snap buy the good/un-used ones as they are hard to find), and a buffing wheel. Being that my family runs a Saddle shop, we make our knives surgical sharp. I used to use the old leather strip till I cut the **** out of my wrist on a cold day (shivering). Belt sander is much better but I have sent a few knives flying across the room.
If you have ever made your own knife; ALOT of material has to ground away. Overtime the material is ground away from just sharpening if used heavily. I use some of my knives a lot on jobs, hobbies, and eating (it's interesting in restaurants but I really hate cheap steak knives!). At the shop, we get many knives to sharpen from customers and Spyderco and Oldtimer/Case (bad, just horrid) just seems to have more material loss. It is not that much but over a few years; the loss is notable in its original picture.
Wow. You guys are rockin some nice blades. I'm almost embarassed to say but...
I carry a Kershaw Ken Onion Scallion in red... have for ten years now. Nice little knife really.
I also sometimes carry my Ken Onion Leek with serrated blade and ceramic 'Cryo' coating. Sharp as hell.
Also have a few others... Camillus paratrooper knife from 1984....
Also a wicked survival knife that says 'Parker Brothers' (no, not the toy company) and 'surgical steel japan pat. pend.' on the blade... any ideas what this is?

I've actually never owned blades until recently. I went to the RenFest here in Ohio and saw some pretty cool throwing knives. I guess there a limited edition collector's Throwing Knives from the Green Hornet movie. They have a certificate of authenticity and I paid $25 for them. I think that's a fair price, as I've seen them for a bit more on Ebay.
Initially I was hoping to just practice throwing them at targets for fun, but now that I've learned they're Limited edition collector's knives, I'm wondering if I should just sell them or set them up for display somewhere.

and couple old folders - but I'm disappointed in the Gerber.
I wanted a fixed blade, strong hunting knife that would hold it's edge. The above
had let me down. It's strong, but dulled way too quickly even with my proper maintenance.
Anyone know of a really good fixed blade hunting knife, with a 4-5 inch blade that will hold it's edge? It needs to cut line, rope, and sometimes animal flesh/hide.

I'd suggest the spyderco warrior. H1 steel is easy to sharpen and touch up, and will not rust, which helps when skinning or around saltwater. It's also got both a serrated side and a blade side for whatever purpose you need.
