My friends and I are really looking forward to the new precons, since we want to get into Commander and missed the last ones.
How long do these last in big box stores like Target or Walmart?
Do people often just grab a bunch of them?
Are there any decks that you don't think will be available, unless we try to get them the day they come in?
My guess Atleast January of Next year.
With them being in the main stores Im sure you will be able to get any deck. Most stores will order them for you if they dont have the certain deck you want in stock.
Just like the previous precons when they come off the shelves they will steadily become worth more and more. I can see the Esper Deck being worth more due to all the possiblities. That or the Bant one. Bane of Progress only being in that one deck I can see people grabbing that deck quickly.
Products like this are always on limited runs, and probably last about six months. Sometimes you can find them later than that, like at a Wal Mart or something, but it also depends on just how popular the particular product is.
Check your LGS, Target, Wal-Marts, etc. every day. You'll get them eventually. You can try ordering them online but you'll end up paying an extra $25 or more for the set.
I liked this better last time where you could get the whole thing for $120 if you looked hard enough. No discounts this time!
I figure there is $400 'value' if you buy all 5 decks.
well worth any target/warmart price...
Has anyone attempted to calaculate the value of each deck to place them in an order?
There's been a few price-points tossed around, but a lot of the problem is that it's unknown how much the new cards will cost (especially ones that seem likely to be chase cards, like True-Name Nemesis), and how much reprints of cards that are mostly high for supply reasons will cause them to drop, like the P3K cards and Baleful Strix.
Has anyone attempted to calaculate the value of each deck to place them in an order?
Don't put too much stock in that though. Diaochan was $80 before she was reprinted in a really limited release set and that super limited release card is $6. The P3K cards almost can't even be factored in here because they aren't that good but because of their rarity they are worth a **** ton.
FYI, on opening day last time the BUG deck was way more valuable than all the others. It had a bunch of known commodities and 2 playable generals in arguably the best color scheme. It is now worth the least of the 5.
Go for the decks that have good commanders and new cards, not reprints.
The other thing to keep in mind is that as soon as one of the new cards becomes Legacy good, players will start grabbing the decks to flip them. This is one more reason why getting them sooner is better the assuming you have a few months.

Definitely. I see mind seize and evasive maneuvers running away on price, thanks to new white removal spell and the merfolk.

But this can also work in your favor as long as you aren't looking for those chase cards. If you just want the legends/some of the new arts/ect., then people opening up the decks just to get an Identity Nemesis and flipping the rest means more copies of everything else the deck had in the market.
It also depends on where you live. Around me, they were generally impossible to find at MSRP after a month. I suspect this print-run to be larger, but I also suspect that more will be bought. I'd say if you wait more than a month you may have some issues finding them.

This guy has it right and if looking at value, this is the way to look at it.
P3K: All the P3K cards will become *nearly* worthless. None of the ones reprinted see much of any play and their price was due to rarity. That's no longer an issue. (And it's nice that Wizards is making these available for people who want them, now I just need my imperial seal reprint). Hua Tuo, Honored Physician and Strategic Planning might stay a bit more than the others because their better than the rest, we'll see.
New Cards: As for value in the new cards, Wizards has been kind enough to identify those for us (of the new cards). We've got Unexpectedly Absent, True-Name Nemesis, and restore (with, IMO, True-Name Nemesis being the most likely to see the most play *midrange decks + fish. AND it's probably too good for reprinting for modern / standard). Depending on how well they perform, any one of these could be worth more than the $25 for the box, so these are the guys I would try to stock up on (though Restore seems the most likely to be printable in an expansion (with fetches) or strong GY theme to tank its eventual value). I'm also a big fan of Toxic Deluge as a splashable 3cc wrath in black, but I'm sure I'm wrong because someone else would have pointed that out by now. Also several of these could settle in the 5ish range if they see enough play (a la stranglehold / Homeward Path). Finally, of the new legends, looking at kaalia of the vast it appears that one of the generals can climb relatively high if its popular enough, suggesting that if any of the new commanders get played a lot, they might retain their value. IMO the bird, blinker, and esper karn are the "best" but it's hard to evaluate (particularly because polling last time and this time didn't yielded anything useful except that Kaalia was SLIGHTLY favored).
Other Reprints: All the individual card values of reprints will tank, Baleful Strix is probably the most likely to retain much of its value because it ALREADY sees legacy play and the original printing was a fairly limited print-run (with goblin sharpshooter & Karmic Guide being the other two potential outliers). Also Sol Ring and Command Tower should retain their value (eventually) because people will always want to pick them up (the same reason why Eternal Witness / Lightning Greaves are still a couple of dollars despite 100 printings).
tl;dr
IMO singles in a year
Top Value: True-name nemesis, Restore, Unexpectedly Absent,
Middle Value: Command Tower, Sol Ring, Karmic Guide, Goblin Sharpshooter, MAYBE a new general
It's a Trap: P3K, everything else
But this can also work in your favor as long as you aren't looking for those chase cards. If you just want the legends/some of the new arts/ect., then people opening up the decks just to get an Identity Nemesis and flipping the rest means more copies of everything else the deck had in the market.
That's what I'm looking forward to, but the OP was looking to buy the precons, so Legacy players scooping them up is a concern.
Definitely. I see mind seize and evasive maneuvers running away on price, thanks to new white removal spell and the merfolk.
Nooo!!!!
Those were the two I was aiming to get....not because of any potential 'run away' cards, but because of the decklists, those two contained the cards that I have the least cards of in an effort to expand the diversity of my collection.
Without pricing in the new cards, I've ballparked the values of the decks (I found to be finacially viable) as follows:
Eternal Bargain - $43.10
Nature of the Beast - $49.00
Power Hungry - $27.50
Mind Seize - $43.40
Evasive Maneuvers - $39.50
Don't know what the new cards will do to these figures...
[EDH] It's built to be a casual format and to a specific vision, and if you don't like the vision, there's nothing wrong with that, but it's not going to change to accommodate everyone. Big tent is not a goal.
You didn't add Hua Tuo, Honored Physician and Strategic Planning?
I reduced their value to 20% thinking that the release of the cards in the Commander set will devalue or simply not sustain the existing value of the cards.
I reduced their value to 20% thinking that the release of the cards in the Commander set will devalue or simply not sustain the existing value of the cards.
I only ask because those two cards alone are worth $100+ and none of the prices reflect that. That said, I think Hua Tao is $5 and Planning is $1 and the originals drop by about 20%.

excellent, i have mine set aside with my LGS, but I may pick up an extra one or two from Target to introduce friends to the format.
What numbers are you using? I get about $35 for Power Hungry just looking at Spoils of Victory, Goblin Sharpshooter, Sol Ring, Command Tower, Goblin Bombardment, Endless Cockroaches, and Inferno Titan. That's with TCGPlayer low prices.
I reduced their value to 20% thinking that the release of the cards in the Commander set will devalue or simply not sustain the existing value of the cards.
I did say what I found to be financially viable.
Wasn't doing any major analysis of the decks or anything....
If I were to add in every card over $1, they all are around $70-$100.
