bump a single thread in steam workshop , get banned for 7 days with no prior offenses or so much as a warning, and with basically no explanation.
I have to admit I appreciate the MTGS moderators a lot more now, at least they are visible in the community, speak and act like other forumgoers and attempt to give reasons for their actions, instead of being nameless faceless banhammer bots.
I will say that in my time on staff I've looked around a lot at how other sites work - to see if there is a way I can improve the job I do. And, I see us being sort of in the middle and becoming more in tune with what the users here want from the site. There are some places that are more tight than others... People will always complain about the Rules section being rigid, but they have the single most comprehensive and useful rules database on the internet. The moderation is largely to thank/blame for that.
I would love to hear about more "notorious" sites that rough people up though. I find them to be somewhat entertaining.
Sing lustily and with good courage.
Be aware of singing as if you were half dead,
or half asleep:
but lift your voice with strength.
Be no more afraid of your voice now,
nor more ashamed of its being heard,
than when you sang the songs of Satan.
Reading the 'rules' for workshop, it's funny that it says:
General Rules
Do not do any of the following:
Flame or insult other members
Bypass any filters
Abuse or encourage abuse of the Reputation, or Post Reporting Systems
Post personally identifiable information (i.e. name, address, email, phone number, etc.) Bump threads
Derail a thread's topic
Post links to phishing sites
Post spam (i.e. +1, 10char, rickrolls) or Re-post Closed, Modified, Deleted Content
Repetitively post in the incorrect forum (example: trade requests belong in trading forum) Openly argue with a moderator
Seriously...the two bolded ones are like "Uhhh...okay, but if your bumping by responding to it, then what's the problem? And Openly argue with a mod? What if they start it?"
Bleh, it's no wonder I don't respond to anything in there.
I've been a member of a lot of forums. On a couple forums I post on for DOOM and Nine Inch Nails, threads get closed and people banned without notice just if the admin is in a bad mood that day. On many World of Warcraft forums I used to post on, the amount of negativity and nonsense posted was really sickening.

On the Playdom forums for Marvel's Avengers Alliance (I'm TK-421 there as well!), if you post unspoiled content, you'll find yourself banned before you can say Theros. It makes me appreciate my forum. Rumormongers, you rock!

Personally, my favorite strictly-moderated site is Elitist Jerks, a World of Warcraft guild board that was THE go-to place for good strat and spec information for years. And it became that by proactively weeding out stupid users and worthless threads.
Yes, they live up to their name, but back in the day, if you were after good information from people who knew what they were talking about and didn't want to wade through piles of drooling derp, it was the best place to go. I'd give anything for there to be an MTG site like that.
For reference, their forum rules:
1) All posters are to make an effort to communicate clearly. In particular, all posts should be made in a reasonable approximation of proper English. We realize that a significant number of you are not native speakers, and we do n pay at least minimal attention to sentence and paragraph structure. This includes not starting a new paragraph for each sentence.
2) All opinions should be stated as succinctly as possible. Do not make multiple consecutive posts; rather, multi-quote and include all your ideas in a single post. Do not quote huge blocks of text to add a short reply; instead, quote only what you need to to make your point. Do not break a single quoted reply into multiple blocks; doing so needlessly lengthens your post without aiding its readability. And don't provide unnecessary backstory: if it isn't relevant to the question you're asking or the point you're making, we don't need to know about it.
3) All discussion should be both polite and civil. Trolling or flaming in any form is forbidden. Just because someone disagrees with you does not mean they are stupid or on drugs and their personal hygiene isn't really relevant to the discussion. Regardless of the merit (or lack thereof) of your argument, it should be made in a way that is neither insulting nor condescending.
4) Whining in any form is forbidden. Blizzard is not incompetent or stupid and they are not intentionally screwing you over and neither is anyone else. If all you're going to do is complain, don't bother posting.
5) Threads should be started if and only if there is some reasonable topic to discuss. If the issue you wish to discuss is covered in an existing thread, use it rather than creating a new one. If you are asking a simple question that you expect to have a simple answer, ask it in one of the "Simple Questions/Simple Answers" threads. But if you feel there is a topic of discussion not well-covered by existing threads, feel free to start a new thread to discuss it.
6) Do not post unless you have something new and worthwhile to say. Do not bump, quote for truth, cross-post, or post only to say thanks. We don't want to hear your funny story about something that happened in your raid last night, your baseless speculation is unproductive, and your idea for a new ability really isn't that interesting. We don't care what gear you are hoping to get or just received. If you have an idea you'd like to share with the community, support it with analysis, testing, or both that indicates you've put some thought into it. (Note: Posting of a new untested spec falls under this rule, unless you have done the grunt work and have information to support your amazing new spec don't even bother posting it here.)
7) Do not beg for hand-holding. These are forums for discussion and analysis, not for answering any question that you might happen to dream up. Search and read before posting--do not post a question unless you are fairly confident that the answer isn't widely known or easily attainable. In particular, we do not want to take a look at your armory or WWS to tell you what you're doing wrong and we're not interested in making your tough gear or spec decisions for you. We expect you to use the search function and also to read the first post as well as the last 5 pages of the thread you are posting in. Chances are your question has already been answered. Additionally, do not post asking for confirmation of a simulation result. If you think there is a problem with the Sim you are welcome to PM the author.
8) All accounts must have a valid WoW profile. If you no longer play and have deleted all characters you used to have, you may select the "No WoW Account" option; otherwise, this information must be filled out for your main character. If you fail to observe this rule you'll be permanently banned from our forums. We do not permit anonymous posting.
9) Do not sign your posts. People can see who you are from the profile printed to the left of each post, so signing your posts is redundant and simply takes up space. Similarly, you do not need to link your armory in your post, as if people wish to see it they can get it from your profile.
10) Do not respond to terrible posts.
On the Playdom forums for Marvel's Avengers Alliance (I'm TK-421 there as well!), if you post unspoiled content, you'll find yourself banned before you can say Theros. It makes me appreciate my forum. Rumormongers, you rock!
They're also much more strict on mature content. Can't even say "what the hell" without getting infracted since it's a family-friendly forum.
I've seen you on there a few times though! Aside from the strict modding over there, I like many of the users.

The gleemax forums are moderated with a preposterous level of inadequacy. Either the mods respond to tickets, doling out auto responses without even looking at the kind of context that may make discussions appropriate, or they do nothing, even when it is clear that there's nothing warranted or appreciated about the attention brought about by a disruptive user, even if they are spamming and trolling the hell out of sections.
Ridiculous punishments as well.
Ah, and you can be further punished for trying to discuss or appeal your punishment.
They're actually actively discouraged from interacting with the forums they work on. Something deeply deeply wrong with that...
I get it, on one level, it's to maintain a professional facade that they can operate behind, but... they have no concept of what the community feels or wants. Kind of makes me irritated because they're actually employees, not volunteers.
The Escapist probably has my favorite mods, since they interact and work with the community to avoid banning people as much as possible, despite the vile stuff that gets spewed, especially in the Religion and Politics dungeon.

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
I would love to hear about more "notorious" sites that rough people up though. I find them to be somewhat entertaining.
A lot of people think the Giant in the Playground forums are too extreme. A lot of people take issue with banning politics and any real-world religions.

What? I've never seen anyone infracted for signing their posts. Is this a recent thing?
There is a user named Harkius (I may of accidentally a letter somewhere)
he signs all of his posts.
Others started to sign their posts with that name, and got infracted for trolling.
probably was within the past year....

Context is a thing. This, however, is not really what this thread is about. It is not illegal to sign posts even if it is generally regarded as a waste of space.
(I have an ex that signs her text messages )

It does. If you sign your posts you get infracted for trolling, except if you are the user people are allegedly trolling. Has happened.
