So I suppose it's a moot point as I received an email back from the guy saying they were already sold but I thought I'd get your opinions on this anyway. This posting showed up in my local craigslist recently. I was out of town this weekend so I didn't see it till 24 hours after it was posted(went up Saturday night).

What do you guys think was this a trap or were these stolen cards, or did I miss out on the deal of the year because I went out of town for 4th of July weekend? There are some red flags; taking cash only, the poor english, the low price relative to what's offered(though it's a large amount to be sure), the lack of pictures. I'm going to assume it was a trap/stolen cards, it'll make me feel better. But if you happen to be or know the person who somehow came up with $2.3K after 5 on a Saturday to buy these let me know as I am immensely curious as to what I missed.
This person knows enough about Magic to list all of the attention-getting, $$$ cards. It's not coincidence. If someone knows those are the cards to list to get the attention of buyers, then they know enough about the game to know the value of said cards.
Trap. definitely a trap. If years of online gaming have taught me anything about deals, it's that if they sound too good to be true, they usually are.
And he lists a black lotus first. Followed by the rest of the power nine. The odds that some random player just has these and is selling them way cheap on craigslist for cash only? Very small.
Trap.

But if it was a trap, why would he say he'd sold them already? Unless they already trapped their sucker and didn't need any more prey I guess. It would be a good way to get the emails of all the people in the area that are looking to make money buying magic cards. Maybe it's the competition scouting. Hmm..

Okay, maybe stolen. Still, nothing wholesome about that exchange. It sets off all kinds of alarm bells in my head. This sounds like either someone who went to an event and stole the nearest thing they could, or someone who spent 15 minutes on the internet looking up "expensive magic cards"
Anyway, I'd say you dodged a bullet there.

Either stolen or fakes/proxies etc. No way someone with that collection would even go to Craigslist to post it for sale anyways......any respectable buyer would need pictures and proof etc.
Scam.

Old enough to know better, much too young to care.
If he's internet savvy enough to use Craigslist, then he's internet savvy enough to look up MTG prices. Just the cards he listed would come out to over 10 grand.
Even if he was super desperate for $2300, he could list 1/2 those cards and find an instant buyer at that price. Almost garaunteed they would be fakes/forgeries.
I've never used Craigslist for cards. What do you mean by "trap"?
By a "trap" I mean they don't actually have the cards and are just trying to lure you out to rob you. You're so excited to get such a sweet deal you rush out to meet them with $2300 in hand, but when you arrive at the meeting place you get mugged. I don't know if that is something that actually happens but there have been instances in the news of people using craigslist to lure their murder victims in so...
It seems a bit good to be true, but it may have been worth going after if possible.
If you were interested, I'd recommend binging along a trusted friend or two, in order to determine the authenticity of cards if it was in question, and also for protection.
Yeah I thought there was a chance it wasn't a setup to rob me and I felt confident I could verify their authenticity so when I saw the ad I immediately emailed the guy to offer to buy them. He replied with 2 words "already sold". If I had set up a meeting I would have asked to meet in the parking lot of the police station or something like that. Unfortunately I don't have any trusted friends in the area but there are some pretty solid guys at work that might have helped me out if needed. Of course all this theorizing is moot, except to think what to do if a similar situation occurs in the future.
Thing is, I have gotten amazing deals through craigslist before. If I were to do such a large transaction, I always leave the money in a safe place, bank or at home. I always ask to meet in a private place, and do not go to ssomeone's house.. aka ask to meet up at a store.fast food restaurant nearby if u have to!
if you really are nervous, look into a concealed carry permit.

A "concealed carry permit" to buy Magic cards?!?!
You have been watching too much of the Zimmerman trial.
I have never purchased anything from Craigslist but meeting in a public place seems reasonable enough.
Might be a scam, might not be. I've found insane deals on MTG on craigslist many times. Sometimes people need cash right away and Craigslist is the best avenue for that. At the same time most people on Craigslist are not looking to pay retail for whatever they are buying. They want a great deal, maybe this guy understands that. In any event, if you are going to be buying high end cards from ANYONE you should be comfortable at identifying fakes, own a loupe, and try and meet up in public places to avoid any kind of shenanigans. It's impossible to know if this was a scam just from the ad alone.

Impossible to know for sure, true, but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
Although the guy does know is audience, you could post an ad telling MTG player to go to a dark alley blindfolded with $50 in their hand and you'll put a Mox in their pocket and probably get a few players willing to take the gamble
Due to real-life obligations, I am taking a long break from Magic which may include missing the local Legacy GP. Apologies for not being able to keep my threads updated.
As crazy as it sounds, I think this deal was legit, and I think I know who got it. I own Capital Games in Gahanna and heard about this through the grapevine.

It's not so much carrying for buying Magic cards. It's carrying because you have a large sum of money on you.
You're telling me that you wouldn't carry if you were buying a collection for $2,000 to some guy you just met online? That seems foolish.

Foolish? How is risking getting killed over $$ foolish? There are much safer ways (meeting in a public, well lit place) to avoid danger if you think it might be a dangerous situation

Totally crazy, and now I'm trying to figure out how to get up to the minute text updates on new craigslist postings so I don't miss this kind of thing anymore.
Also, I feel like the idea of meeting in front of a police station is a pretty good deterrent for potential traps, noone looking to mug you is going to meet there. Of course some law abiding folk might also not want to meet there and also I don't know how the police would feel about it... maybe that's a bad idea.
