I am very pleased to see that searing spear is not being reprinted in this set, and that shock shall be taking its place, again. While neither of those cards is as excellent as lightning bolt, at least shock is better than searing spear, as its damage-to-mana ratio is 2 for 1, rather than the 1.5 for 1 that the spear provides.
Which is all well and good until you realize that Shock can't kill half the things Searing Spear can. Searing Spear > Shock.

No, I still say that shock is the superior card, as it has a better ratio of damage to mana: 2 for 1, while searing spear is only 1.5 damage per mana, making shock the better choice between those two, in my mind.

Damage ratio only makes sense when you are dealing with burn to the dome as a wincon, not as an answer to creatures and a utility spell. Pillar is better than shock in this format.

Losing Thundermaw and Spear in a sigle hit... my heart can't handle that.
Valkas is nowhere close to his older cousin. Shock's advantage is its speed, however, VoR takes a sh*t on that, making cards like Mugging better options.
I hope Theros and the rest of M14 come out with some nice stuff, or my removal suit in my R/x aggro will consist of Mugging, Mortars and maybe Warleader Helix...

Searing spear is 3:1 and Shock is 2:1. 3:1 > 2:1. Damage/Card is a much more relevant barometer of burn strength than mana ratio. There is a reason that Char is actually a good card.

So...searing spear cost R now? 1.5:1 is the correct mana ratio
W may only be paid with white mana. U may only be paid with blue mana. B may only be paid with black mana. R may only be paid with red mana. G may only be paid with green mana. C may only be paid with colorless mana. 1 may be paid with white, blue, black, red, green, or clolorless mana.

Read the post. He says damage per card, not damage per mana. He believes damage per card is more relevant than damage per mana, in which case searing spear IS superior.

Don't grill me if I'm the 100th person to notice this, but 8 of the mythics that have been spoiled are new, meaning the other 7 will be reprints if they continue in the same way as they have since M10.
Problem is...I thought Chandra was supposed to be new in M14....but that would make at least 9 new mythics only leaving room for 6 reprints.
There shouldn't be much problem. They can cut down on one of the new rare/uncommon/common that was print and make that one new card a mythic instead. Or they can be trying to do something new for 20th anniversary.
is it correct that neither lightning bolt nor searing spear get reprints?
how are red decks suppost to work then?
in my oppinion both are clearly (but not strictliy) superior to shock, because they can kill more things and have a better damage to card ratio, which is often more important than damage to mana.
edit: shard volley would fit in the crunch and it has something to do with lands (which is somehow a subtheme in m14).
what do you think? maybe sacing a land is regarded bad in a core set...
Just for reference- lightning bolt is strictly better than shock while spear is just better.

For all we know, this set may have an all new mythic set. Wizards is known to change up the game plan every so many years, and this year is the 20th anniversary. Would sure make me happy, reprinted mythics is like getting the same present for Christmas and your birthday.

Land (according to span counting there's only room for three more, but that is possibly incorrect)
227 L
228 L
229 L 230 W Plains (Basic Land - Plains)
... 249 G Forest (Basic Land - Forest)
What if it's correct?
The announcement doesn't include the rarity breakdown, but assuming it's the usual 20 basic lands, 101 common, 60 uncommon, 53 rare, and 15 mythic rare we're looking at just three nonbasic lands.
It would also mean we get more nonland rares.
Do we have any information on the rarity breakdown?

No, as Slots 226 and 225 are "flex" spots. They can be either artifacts or lands. Saying that, should they NOT be rare lands, they could be the ETB Tapped lands that we last had in 8th Edition.

According to the theory, there are for sure only 23 slots for lands, where slots 226 and 225 are artifacts.
No leak, bolt, baneslayer, hate cards, probably no duals, this set is probably going to be horrible.
so you say because theire are no rare lands the set is bad? i really like it. i actualy hate rare lands, they are plain boring. i want to spend my money on creatures and spells not on boring lands.
also we have over 100 cards left, so you really cant say anything about the rest of the cards. there may be other great reprint, or the planeswalkers are great, or we get something awesome new, like thundermaw hellkite and thragtusk last set.
@the one who wanted to know if thundermaw gets reprinter: no it wont. thats why i sold my playset 2 month ago where they still were at 20€ a piece.
Did they confirm 20 basic lands? If they didn't, maybe there's room for lands (rare, uncommon). They already printed sets with less basic lands in favor of more room (ISD, iirc).
I would understand that if they skip lands now to give us something better later, if they consider 10 fetchlands as non-core set material.
Anyway, I believe they "have to" have mana fixers on common, uncommon and rare, especially with slivers on 3 colors.
Having slots for Thoughtseize, Remand and Mutavalt, imo, is more important now than how they will fix colors on limited

There's still room in the number crunch for Skullcrack and Volcanic Hammer.
Or, perhaps, a new burn spell.

I'm confused... Do you mean FTV:20 or something like the special boxes that Vizzerdrix was in in Ninth Edition?
