"Battle doesn't need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don't ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don't ask why I fight."

Not even close. This will make it easier for new players to understand the game - plenty of sources to confirm this statement. This rule builds up to a new and exciting block (common legendaries and multiple legendaries of the same subtypes [similar to Jaces]). Also, clones and same type/subtype legendaries shouldn't be used as removal.
June 1994- Wizards- Introduce legends and legend rule. Legend rule: Only one legend creature with a given name can be in play. Any others go to graveyard if not the oldest.
May 2013- RadjanSpiritMonger- Suggested legend rule change. Legend rule: Legend rule: Only one legend creature with a given name can be in play. Any others go to graveyard if not the newest.
So 18 years of progress to make the game fun and playable to as many as possible and......THATS YOUR ****ING FIX?!?!?!
Honestly I feel that the rules are fine as they are now. My suggestion is more of a, "well if they're going to do something..." If they had a problem with clones, then they should make the rules change for clones, which is a MUCH SMALLER POOL of cards to alter. This rules change as it is will have significant and sweeping changes to all formats. Many unintended and some degenerate.

Evil is boring. The universe is friendly. Life is on your side. Joy is your birthright. Cynicism is idiotic. Fear is a bad habit. Despair is lazy. In fact, all of creation wants you to succeed. Act as if the universe is a prodigious miracle created for your amusement and illumination. Assume that secret helpers are working behind the scenes to assist you in turning into the gorgeous masterpiece you were born to be. . . Life always gives you exactly what you need, exactly when you need it.
But the problem /wasn't/ with clones, it was with legends - specifically, the current legend rule was not creating the play experience desired, through dead cards-in-hand and using legends as removal.
This change will, barring a few individual cases, improve gameplay by allowing more interaction and reducing the number of "useless cards in hand" events.
Seriously, if the problem were just an issue with clone effects, they /would/ have changed them. But that wasn't what they were fixing.

So if their going to do you want them to go backwards? That's like a car company say " Remember when X-Car2 use to take 19 hours to go from ThisPlace to ThatPlace ? Well the X-Car3 does it in 6 hours." and then you complain about how they should just rerelease X-Car because it took 2 days to go the same distance. Oh wait it was too sturdy and gas efficient for its time, so make it fiber glass and a gas guzzler.
And you want they should errata the smallest card pool possible?
Well lets see...if we keep the current legends rule that means about 20 to 25 cards will have to be errata'd to keep cloning effects from copying legends.
Or It goes to the new rule and......Brothers Yamazaki...and nothing else. One card needs errata and that's it.

Just to be polite, why don't we change this phrase to "Destroying my childhood", "Ruining my Childhood" or some other not-as-offensive phrase?
The whole point of the phrase is that people will compare changes to something not significant and not life changing and compare it to said act which is significantly life changing. While some of the people who disagree and don't like are still taking it better, others are treating it like they've been violated.

The folks at LoadingReadyRun have uploaded a video where they talk about these changes. It's a casual Magic disucssion, but very interesting take on the rules changes and the implications. Video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pfyZ9dwbBM
ALso, they crack a pack of The Dark and discuss the cards and how horrible it would be to have to draft The Dark, which is fun.

the change is the cause, your examples are effects. Please compare causes to causes and effects to effects.
ex: the rule change is like when I get my finger chopped off.

the rule change will not reduce useless cards in your hand you still can have only one in play. and if your opponent is pacifisming your creatures you should be winning anyway. people should stop making this point.
Both of your explanations are in line with what I said, and the first one came from the same source. I can't tell if you're arguing with me or not, but thank you for venerating my theory. I'm sorry you feel offended or whatever but I think you're getting a little worked up over something pointless. The rules change. C'est la vie. If you people would divert this much energy to a real cause the world would be much easier to live in.
Arguing isn't the goal, perhaps debate? And debate in the effort to say "Hey, this isn't a big deal, nor is it THAT hard to explain in a story setting." I'm annoyed by people yelling the sky is falling, and I don't feel I'm putting too much energy into it, but simply pointing out what you finished your sentiment with here: C'est la vie, things change. C'est la vie means "such is life" and that is all I was saying, this is a change they felt needed to be made for the function of the game, and it has a very minor impact on flavor. I understand some people being upset, but we have people claiming the end of Magic over this, and it simply isn't. I even understand a pure Vorthos disliking this to annoyance, but not to outright indignation like many of the posts in this thread suggest. When I check in the few times a day to this forum that I do, this thread has a new page of people complaining about the new rules. I COULD simply not click on it, and am probably at that point, but am still trying to get people to see that the other side is just trying to highlight how NOT a big deal this really is, especially since it could be reversed if it degenerates the game too much(it simply won't though).
Anyway, I guess that's the bottom line. Hey, I may not have even been talking to you specifically but rather highlighting your statement to point out that explanations have been given, and we haven't even given the story writers time to put the change in context. I feel that is premature, and people should see how they feel about the rule changes before deciding to give up sanctioned play/the game due to this one minor change.
The rules changes are going to have huge negative effects on the game IMO. Whoever these people are in WOTC who are responsible should be fired immediately.
Me and my buddies have been playing with the new rules since they were announced
Generally speaking it's made games much more enjoyable: now the decks function as they are intended to and it has made for some epic matches where JTMS faces off against another JTMS
Yeah the flavour fail is epic but if it makes for better gameplay I'm ok with it
Pacifism isn't the only situation where having a "reset legend" card would be useful, though. Clearing damage, removing unwanted counters (-1/-1, bribery, whatever), removing enchantments or equipment, removing negative UEOT effects, and so on. Admittedly, those work better with Legends with Flash and/or haste, but boiling it down to pacifism is disingenuous. Either way, "something to deal with a rare occurrence" is still better than "something that's not useful at all until my legend dies".
The flavor issues are not necessarily wrong, there are flavor issues. The problem is that flavor issues should not prevent positive influences in the game.

How does this stop something like Bribery? Wouldn't the old Legend rule be a lot better for preventing a Bribery effect?
Is flavor really that important to constantly have? In a game where you can have a small bird like Birds of Paradise wield a massive weapon like Loxodon Warhammer with no problems?
This rule change doesn't destroy the flavor of legendaries while making them more interactive. It's a good change.

Obviously you give BoParadise a LWarhammer earring that magically enhances it.
But then why is it getting a full +3? What about the trample aspect? Are these birds suddenly gigantic?! IT'S RIDICULOUS AND I DON'T LIKE IT!!!! SKY IS FALLING!!!!
It's not a matter of where it GRIPS it! It's a simple matter of weight ratios! A four pound bird cannot lift a hundred pound warhammer!
To be fair, many humans probably could not lift a hundred pound warhammer.
I think overall, the game is capable of handling about one flavor incongruity relating to any given situation. So until someone tries to copy a Bird with a Hammer while there's a Leyline of Singularity in play, we should all be safe. If someone did, well, it's called Leyline of Singularity for a reason.

No bird can lift one either, yet both do in fantasy worlds. Are you going to tell a pyromancer that they can't make fire by snapping their bare fingers? No because they'd burn you to death....unless you are one of those people who are immune to fire.
