Unless you're playing in a storm of counterspells, Comet Storm is far beyond the other two. Instant speed and the possibility of multiple targets is fantastic.

I used to think the same thing. I've played comet storm in so many decks and it always preformed mediocre.
so mana intensive. To do a meager 3 damage to 2 targets it costs 7 mana.

Six mana. You don't need to kick it for the first target. You're only paying one more mana for that than you would be for the other two, except it's instant speed and you have the potential to aim it at multiple targets in a pinch. If I want this effect, Comet Storm is always the first one I go for.
What deck are you trying to fit this into?

Depends on what you want to do. As a burn sweeper, Comet Storm is pretty solid. If you're looking for a card to finish off an opponent, then you can't go wrong with Banefire.
Don't discount the exile effect with Red Sun's Zenith and the card it's based off of, Disintegrate. Sometimes a creature really needs to stay off the board, and Red doesn't get much exile effects.

OTOH, Comet Storm can finish off multiple opponents, while Banefire can't. And if you're worried about counterspells, Boseiju, Who Shelters All is a thing.

True, but you'll need to sink a lot more mana into it to do so. For sheer straightforward burn bluntness, Banefire is probably better.
To the point though, if the OP is looking to run three such burn spells, I would probably drop Earthquake and run Banefire, Comet Storm and Starstorm.
Erm... 3 more mana (+R, +kick twice) to take out a table of 4. That's not "a lot more" when you're talking about finishing the game.
::Sigh:: Alright. Play on semantics all you want. The point is that - as a finisher - Comet Storm cost more, can be countered and the damage can be prevented.
It's a great spell and the OP should run it. But its role is usually different than Banefire's.
Not in my experience. Then again, if I'm using an X-cost spell as a finisher, I'm usually going to have infinite mana anyway (or at least way more mana than is necessary). Coffers-Exsanguinate, storm-Warrens-Brightstone-Comet, etc.
agreed with this, I don't know if I'd play banefire outside of a janky "pyromancer" deck.
Banefire is performing pretty well in my Melek big mana deck. Sure, it only kills one or two guys, but it kills them dead.
Anyway, if you can only choose one of these, you want Comet Storm unless your meta is unusually counter-heavy (and in that case you should be playing Molten Disaster over Earthquake.)
I already have starstorm and earthquake in the deck.
[Primer] Kozilek, Butcher with Juice.

Beating Face with Bane
Beatrice, the Golden Witch
RGodo, Bandit WarlordR
GSeton, Krosan ProtectorG
BGJarad, Golgari Lich LordGB
If you can swing the cost (it's quite pricey), Rolling Earthquake is probably best.

Versus the other options in the OP? It's better.
Fireball can, though not at instant speed.
I was referring only to the OP's options, but you're right. Although I think fireball is way worse than comet storm.
Decidedly.
