A notice like that is utterly ridiculous. First of all it sounds like a desperation move. Second of all, if he has proof he should goto the police, that is a huge theft value wise. The problem with coming out like this though is it gives the thief time to unload the merchandise if they haven't already. Personally, what I would do if I committed that type of theft is put the contents of the theft inside a safe deposit box that I already have and leave no record of what is inside it. If they have no knowledge of what's in it, a warrant can't be obtained.
Source? Because they can. Subpoena the bank for if you went to the box on dates x-y corresponding to the theft.
Sit on the cards until the police drop the investigation.
Alternatively, put them in a waterproof container and bury them somewhere, I'm sure his town has unused hiking trails. Eventually when the cops find nothing it would be safe to retrieve them.
Regardless, nothing good can come from a statement like that. At best it simply gives the person that did it a chance to hide the items. No cards=no proof.
Eli set a 2PM deadline today.... we shall see... also this just in from the mothership...
Hasbro has passed the Affordable Magic Act... known as Wizardcare ... it will steal a portion of everyone's collection or in this case... hire someone to do it at GPs and SCG Opens and then redistribute it amongst everyone. If you have a DCI number and don't buy packs to contribute you will face a fine of higher tournament fees after M14 is released... but hey after M18 everyone will have tier 1 decks to play at PTQs/GP/FNMs
But yes ... I would totally buy the cards from the culprit if there was a 50% discount.. and so would everyone here that don't know Eli... don't deny!
This really isn't constructive at all. Spam warning.
-Memnarch
Just get the police to press charges ASAP, don't get the culprit any chances at redemption!
Because his goal isn't vengeance, it's recovery. The easiest way to get his property returned is to have the culprit give it back. If he goes to the authorities, the property becomes evidence, there's disputes about what was his and what wasn't, and it's a time consuming hassle to get all his stuff back.

Why don't you start giving away your collection? I'm sure we could all use a few of your rares. I just don't understand how people think it is okay to steal another persons property... If this was anyone they would be very upset and be trying to do what ever they can to get there hands back on there collection. Just because Eli had a pretty amazing collections get stolen doesn't mean we should all act like it was his fault and be like "Distribute the Wealth!". If you want to have an amazing collection like he has/did then shovel out some money and buy it yourself. Stop expecting free handouts. Like honestly, what has this world come to?

This is my thought. It seems like he doesn't want the hassle of the yellow tape, and there's no way or knowing how long something would remain as evidence.

Why do people think Robin Hood was a hero?
Only the RICH people should donate. Especially those that think its a good idea to carry around 70k worth of cards.
Am I the only one who has no idea what's going on here?
What exactly is the OP referring to?
Also sucks that somebody got their cards stolen.
SCG was in NJ this recent weekend at Somerset. A dealer named Eli apparently brought $75K worth of cards that got stolen sometime during the weekend from his car. I hope he gets the cards back, but I have to question why he would bring that much product down when he's not able to openly conduct business at an SCG event anyways. Granted he was probably looking to make some value through trades as I got a Japanese Wooded Foothills and a Jitte trading him my extra Snapcasters, but I still wouldn't have brought THAT much value to an event where you can't openly sell cards.

Maybe its just a big insurance scam and people are posting about it everywhere to make it seem legit. Queue law and order music. I would never keep anything worth that much in my car unattended ever.

Well most smart people don't even keep 75k Cash in their house .. there's safety deposit boxes for a REASON. I mean if your parking ferrari's and Lamborghinis outside... and keep 100k cash and get robbed for showing off... then yeah maybe you should have saw it coming. We will see at 2pm what happens... nothing wrong with free handouts... the government does it
Now just watch, at 2pm nothing is gonna happen because he changed his mind and agreed that this was a dumb idea (much like half the people are posting in this thread).
I call BS and say it's a ploy and he knows nothing.

So he's hoping that someone who stole something from him does the honourable and honest thing and returns them by posting threads on the internet?!

(I very well may be wrong though :p)
What is likely to happen is that come 2PM he posts a message akin to "I have now told the police everything! They will find you! muahahahaha!" and we'll never hear anything else about it because he just gave a considerable head start to the thief
Hopefully the police catch the scumbag but he just made their job a lot harder

Oh. Well that sucks to hear that his cards got stolen, but at the same time with that much value I wouldn't leave it lying around unattended -- even in your own damn car.
I've brought 20k worth of cards places without even thinking about it. It's a lot easier then you think when you have foil japanese fetches like he did. He also has a lot of miscuts that make a fair amount of his collection instantly recognizable.
So he's hoping that someone who stole something from him does the honourable and honest thing and returns them by posting threads on the internet?!
Yeah this guy isn't the sharpest tool in the shed

Well, if he truly does know who stole it, perhaps he knows he is a poster here on this particular forum, and so he would know that it would get seen by him/her.
No insurance company would cover 70 k worth of collectables unless you bought specific insurance for it. I'm sure one of the clauses would be to not leave it sitting around in a car unattended.
Maybe its just a big insurance scam and people are posting about it everywhere to make it seem legit. Queue law and order music. I would never keep anything worth that much in my car unattended ever.
Exactly. The whole thing is a bit suspicious.
Anyone who leaves so much in valuables unattended is negligent, and anyone who gets robbed for a hundred grand and doesn't report it immediately to legal authorities is either a liar or a fool.
I'm not looking to blame the victim for their actions (or lack thereof), and I truly sympathize if this story is true, but I honestly have a very hard time believing the entire validity of the claim. Then again, I'm a skeptic by nature and doubt almost everything, including my own doubts.
Anyhow, the best I can come up with myself is a game in the top 8 of a PTQ back during Urza block in which we were starting game 3 with time already expired, so the tiebreaker rule was that whoever had more life after 3 turns would win. And I lost to... healing salve.
Everyone who thinks he's actually going to get it back...
Just remember Roland Chang, Dave Williams, and Justin Parnell (the bigger thefts I can remember)
I'm pretty sure those guys didn't get their stuff back... the people that did this are not STUPID and planned it out i'm sure they are not going to walk into Jupiter Games/SCG with all the cards and ask to buylist it... just like with Art theft.. i'm sure they already had potential buyers lined up

Anyone who attempted to unload even a fraction of that collection within the first week it was reported is basically always getting caught.

Weirdly, standard has been BAD since JTMS was banned, it hasn't been fun, nor healthy since.

Yeah, I don't think anyone in Legacy wants their format to be a part of the Communist Experiment that Wizards already has Modern tied up in:p
