i'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but i just wanted to express my displeasure at the nature of the recent ads running on this website. they are far more irritating and disruptive than ads on this site have previously been. i'm getting really, really tired of my mouse passing over an ad by accident for a millisecond and having to search for a tiny, difficult to find "close" or "X" to get rid of a massive screen-size animation that has popped up, covered everything i was reading, and slowed down my computer.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.

I hate it when you apologize. you provide us with an awesome forum and an awesome Card search Engine, all not for profit. the fact that you let something through, and your slightly less awesome momentarily, yet still awesome, is nothing to apologize for.
I've said this before, but, I agree with Niv. These forums are clearly maintained on their own server, and that is not cheap. Not cheap meaning that Hannes is probably footing about 2 grand a year to host. So if you don't want the site to have ads, feel free to donate. Don't forget the time he puts into maintaining the site, also.
Considering that the likelihood of that happening is absolutely zero, I really think that people should stop *****ing about ads. Seriously, this should be an infractable offense. It is, literally, the epitome of ingratitude, and it's despicable.
So you're actively advocating the website being shut down?
If everyone blocks these ads, the forum will have no revenue and without any revenue, Hannes will have no other choice but to shut it down.
I can understand having the pop-up blocker, since they do get kinda annoying, but completely blocking ALL kinds of ads only hurts the site.
I know this site eats up a TON of bandwidth and is probably very, very expensive to maintain. But if a website wants to support itself off ads now, in not-1997-AOL-land, there are some rules of engagement that need to be observed.
The internet collectively needs to learn that sound ads are just a no. Nope. We won't do it. Same with pop ups. Cut outs and animation are kind of rude, but more people will stomach that.
I know that all the things above pay better than static banner ads, and that's really where things get tough. You kind of just have to put your big boy pants on, realize that it's 2010 and that people will not support your business if you do the internet equivalent of shouting in someone's face.
I know it kind of sucks and is shady and underhanded, but it's too easy to cheat now. If your software is a couple G's for a personal license, people will pirate it. If your ads have sound, people will kill them. Yeah, they're being bad patrons, or even stealing, but those are the facts of life. It may not be right, it may not be fair, but that's just how it is.
I'd be fully behind alternative ways to raise money. A donation drive would be welcome. You could even hand out different colored "who is online" buttons to people who donate. How many people here would be willing to pay 5 or 10 dollars to have their name appear in gold, or have something like "supporter" in their vanity tag, sig, or profile? Maybe a thousand?

I'll be sad if people don't start calling The Chain Veil "Fleetwood Mac."

We opt-out of sound ads, popups, popunders, expanding ads, and all kind of strange ads. I agree, the quality has been very bad lately, and I'm constantly complaining about it. If there's any particularly bad ad, please send me a message about it immediately, and I will take care of it.
I'd love to have ads like Facebook/Gmail, but there just aren't any companies willing to advertise like this on "small" sites like ours. So those banners are the only option we have.
This forum should be free, for every member. I will only ask for money if it's really just a choice between shutting the site down or depending on donations.

I know this site is free, but this is one of the few sites I'd kick in a bit for. I bet there are a lot of people who feel the same.

Horrible ad i saw for the first time today from an online dating game called "Show Up" featuring a full on bust shot. I thought mtgs has enough class to stay away from sexually inclined ads. "Show up and meet the other lonely souls. Dance, flirt, blah blah blah". Really? The other lonely souls? We aren't that pathetic are we??

Speak for yourself, I might be The message itself is no worse than the Yahoo "Stop wasting your time" banners for their matchmaking site. But I agree the picture might be a bit over the edge for this site.

Thanks for reporting this, I will get it removed asap.
I think a fun alternative is playmates, kind of the style of the red zone.
But would follow the color sceme of MTGS. One of the corners would have a pic of hannes avatar. Top of it would have the MTGSalvation logo. Just not sure how feasible this would be.
Or like suggested, have people be able to 'donate' small sums of money, most likely via paypal. And have small incentives, such as a personalized title that lasts for 12 months if you donate $X. Have posts, no matter how many actually read, Over 9,000 if they donate $Y.
Would just be fun stuff, that wouldnt really effect the forums at all, and could pull in revenue. If people complain about the ads after that stuff, simply let them know they can donate, and get a nifty little feature if they want.
How many people come to MTGS? Even if just half just donated $1 a year wouldnt that support the site?
I guess less than a percent would donate, probably even less than 0.1%. No-one wants to pay for anything on the internet. Ask yourself, have you ever donated to a website? I'm sure I haven't. I have paid two, three of times, but because there was content.
(I have received one donation ($1, yes, one) over six years at MagicCards.Info. Granted, I don't have the donate button on every page, but I doubt that will change anything. And, there is no banner ads, so you cannot get away with "Well, there's banners...")
I recently stumbled upon a Mafia Wars one for Facebook. It's pretty aggravating. Also, it has a warning for "Mature Content" and "18 years or older"; not that it really is or that I care, but some people who surf at work or something may think its NSFW.
Maybe you'll get Archenemy cards in your Duel Decks From The Vault: Deck Builder's Toolkit All-Foil Duels of the Planeswalkers Downloadable Content Expansion (Tactics Edition).
Currently there is one of those flashing, talking "You may have already won" ads in the rotation.
This. I once nearly fell out of my seat when that voice came out of nowhere. Obviously a scam, im simply wondering how in the world we allowed it on this site....
just watched this guy win a game after mulliganing down to zero and doing nothing for four turns in the t8 of a 2x premier event. I immediatly Imed a friend to confirm Chuck Noris actually plays Magic.
not really a complaint but considering the demographic of the website, pretty funny. there was a tampax ad that came up in the rotation. I did not see it the wife did when she was looking for cards for her deck.
The Intel Core 2010 ad is completely intrusive. I don't mind the popup ads much, but taking over the whole browser window, while I have to wait for it to load so I can CLOSE IT? Really?*
(* This makes me wish SNL would do a Really?! skit on the subject.)

you're either exaggerating or i am the only person ever to donate to you. i thought it was more than a dollar, but it was a long time ago and i was a poor college student at the time.
