I'm one of those guys who plays Magic using mats and sleeves depicting pretty anime girls on them. Someday I'd like to pimp my ride Otaku-style. This is called Itasha, as explained on Wikipedia. Images of such cars can be searched on Google. I'd probably buy a used car for this reacreational use on weekends while keeping my existing car in vanilla mode for business/professional use.
Based on the reactions to pretty anime girl play mats and card sleevse in that other thread, I wonder if I would be lynched or arrested for driving such a vehicle in the USA.

This is a Japanese-Asian community thing only. You'll stick out like a sore thumb and take a lot of flack for not being a woman. Also, these kinds of wraps and decals look terrible on non-show cars. Getting lynched? No. attracting some hot heads looking for a fight or being tailgated? Possibly.
At the end of the day do whatever you want and whatever makes you happy. Just a heads up about the impending persecution that could follow.

What do you think?
I'd say "don't do it".
Aside from the problems of it being creepy & 99% of girls or women seeing you in it thinking you're a loser... It's also very expensive to make it look like an 8 year old tagger didnt just hit your car.
And lets be clear: I am not calling you a "loser".
But other people will think it.
And I might think it.
Then it's equally expensive to repaint the car to get it back to sellable condition.
If you love anime girls so much, paint a mural on your bedroom wall. Or better yet, ceiling. Get to see it much more, and helluvalot cheaper to install (& helluvalot cheaper to paint over when you come to your senses)
Some amusing etymology from the wiki:
In 1980s, when Japan was at the zenith of its economic might, Tokyo's streets were a parade of luxury import cars. Among them, the "itasha"—originally Japanese slang meaning an imported Italian car—was the most desired. However, in 1990s, the term "itai" was adopted to describe intense, cultish otaku associated with serial killer Miyazaki Tsutomu.[1] Since then, itasha (as the decorated vehicle) was derived from combining the Japanese words for itai (痛い?, painful) and sha (車?, vehicle). Itai here means "painful", which can be interpreted as "painfully embarrassing" or "painful for the wallet" due to the high costs involved. The name is also a pun for Italian cars (イタリア車 Itaria-sha?), truncated in Japanese slang as Itasha (イタ車?).[2]
1. It puts you "out there" in a really bad way, and with the internet someone can and will post you driving around in the car
2. Depreciation of the car price
3. Insurance costs, registration, and other taxes and fees for the additional car
4. Cars decline in value and are not regarded as an investment (most anyway, there are a few exceptions)
The only exception I would bring up is if you were using it as a business advertisement ploy and you entered the car in shows as a means to increase exposure to your business and the like but I would argue there are multiple other better ways to advertise especially with social media. As a novelty car, hell no.
I agree with dcartist. If you're going to splurge on art, buy something original as a nice wall hang or get something commissioned. At the very least you could resell the piece for pennies on the dollar with ebay depending on what you get done. Otherwise something like Stan Lee or whatever might be worthwhile, or if you can get an original from a renowned manga artist.

Ambition must be made to counteract ambition.

Here is my principle: Taxes shall be levied according to ability to pay. That is the only American principle.
3. Insurance costs, registration, and other taxes and fees for the additional car
These two are the big ones I would point out. Anytime you mod a car in any way it makes it tough to resell unless you find a buyer in that community. Heck, back in the late 90's I had an Escort GT (that's RS for the euro-crowd) that I tricked out with performance mods (Flowmaster exhaust, improved air intake, low profile tires, a few other things) because I loved driving that car. When I went to sell it I was shocked to find it very tough to sell. This was an amazing care, in my eyes, and I had only improved it, so why would that make it tough to sell? When people buy a car they do not care about your mods, for the most part, and they might not even trust them if they are mechanical in nature- this would go double for cosmetic changes to your car.
Insurance, for a car done right, will be crazy and probably never be able to cover the money you put in to modding it.
All that said...I know what it's like to want to make your ride as perfect as possible, and often practicalities are ignored or justified with biased logic so that you feel perfectly sound doing it. I would probably do it again, if I had the chance, so if you are young, have disposable income, and no one is financially depending on you then this is the time in your life to do these kinds of things. Once you start building a family you will not have the chance, and may look back in regret.
I really dont see the point. Apart from other people with similar rides, most people are going to think "loser" when they see it. I love anime but it holds a stigma with it, and even I find a problem when it appears to be an 8 year old anime girl flashing her skirt...just sayin'.
Oh wow, um... if you don't care what anyone at all thinks of you while you're driving that car then go for it. Whatever makes you happy and all that. HOWEVER, if you care what anyone at all thinks of you I'd highly recommend against doing that. 99% of people who see the car will think you look foolish driving around in it. I mean, I love anime and if I saw a car like that here in the states I'd be like: "uhhh... really??? :rollout:"
So, I'd strongly advise against it. But it's your car and people's opinions of you that are on the line, so do what you want.
if your straight and single that might increase the time you are single.

I am also not gay, but I play one on TV...I mean I spent much of my late teen years/early 20's at gay clubs so I can be pretty confidant that the gay community in general would be much more impressed with the classic styling of a well maintained car luxury car, rather than one adorned with "cartoon characters". Ita is not the new black, no matter what "they" tell you.
Personally, if you want this as your daily driver, I wouldnt bother. However, if this is going to be something you take out on sunday drives and to the odd car cruise then do it. Its your money spend it how you want.
Personally, I would find a civic hatch, convert it with JDM stock parts, and add some rims (volks, work, and the like). Then add some relatively tasteful images. No upskirts, no nudity, no excessively large breasts.
Thanks for the comments everyone. This is a luxury project using funds saved via severe cutbacks on my Magic expenditures last year. I did more research to see how others address the issues brought up here. Some things I learned for people just starting out with itasha:
1)Wear anime clothing: if you can't wear a T-shirt with an anime character on it in public, itasha is not for you
2)Try magnets instead of decals: non-permanent; remove the magnets before washing the car; test the car body with a regular magnet to make sure it's actually magnetic
3)Start small: just cover the gas cap and see how that goes before trying anything larger/complex
I've worn the Haruhi Gone Wild t-shirt in public, so I guess I pass the t-shirt test.
Magnets solve so much. I won't have to buy a second car since they're removable and reusable. They'll never approach car wrap quality, but I'm guessing they can come close to decal quality.

I have to admit, it's a "practical" car with a few dings that aren't noticeable unless you look closely. Nothing noteworthy. Definitely not anything to brag about.
Your question has reminded me that part of the original plan with the second car would be to choose one that's at least interesting enough to show off even without the itafication.

I have never heard of things as big as decals (lets say to cover the hood) that are magnets, flexible enough to put them on a car, but also strong enough not to be damaged or be blown away.
I think those support the troops things, you guys have over there are magnets, but they are tiny and on the back of the car.
But I would say, magnets on any place which is not the back of the car, won´t work.
Also, Number 3) proves nothing, What people don´t see, won´t cause a reaction.
Also aren´t decals also non permanent? they are just plastic, you can remove them (ok, then they are destroyed) its not like paint or something like that.
Businesses use them all the time for signage when an employee is making work related deliveries, and such. They are thicker than magnetic bumper stickers and adhere dang well, but I think they would look too temporary myself. Then again, I am not the person doing it so that really does not matter.
It reminds me of the sarcastic motivational poster: "lolicon - it has a nicer ring to it than pedo****"
I see nothing all that wrong with either link- not everyone owns a car with an eye towards maximizing it's resale potential. A car can be wonderful extension of the owner and driver, and they should enjoy it without fear of what others say or how much they will sell it for. It is like the argument for living life to it's fullest and using your wealth to live, or setting it aside for the next generation. I say live for now, as long as you are not trashing tomorrow.
In Portland we have a decent sized "art car" community, and these cars are wonderful and provide the owner great joy, so I am inclined towards those who express themselves with their vehicles.
The resale value argument is null. All vinyl decals can be removed at a body shop if not by yourself. Unless you decide to whip out some stencils and a spray can, don't worry about down the line.

Yea, I know exactly what you are talking about. Working for a car dealership, we have a bunch for various functions (golf outings, parades, displays at shopping centers, ect.). These will never go on aggressively curved surfaces. So relatively flat areas, like doors, hood/trunk, and roof.

well there is one thing too say, The car can´t look worse than without the picture, if its a prius
And thats not jap. car bashing, I also drove jap cars, and worse looking stuff (15 year old, once maybe white,35-40 horsepower, Ford fiesta from the early 90s) so I can say such things
@urweak
would such a magnetic thing work on the hood, or would the wind take it away? at 100 mph or so? (which is about maximum speed I drive on the Autobahn for example)
Not a chance. Wind shear wouldn't be able to affect a flat magnetize sheet like that.
For reference, back when I was... quite a bit younger, I once stuck one of my sister's My Little Pony figurines to the hood of my car (back when they came with a magnet, I think it activated some playsets or something) and clocked it in at 101 MPH. Thing didn't even move. Please don't send me hatemail, I was like 17 and she approved the test.
The bigger issue is with stuff that isn't wind; rocks and sun and salt and bugs will be much less kind to the item than wind.
First off, as a guy who owns a show car and is in a team that's internationally known (The International All Stars), I must caution against that course of action. If you want to take a car to the next level, start simple, new wheels and a stereo is what you'd want first. If you want to then stand out more in a crowd, get a paint job, but NOT of anything depicting a female. I know guys (and girls) who have done that and you catch so much flak over it, that in the end it isn't worth it.
You also must ask yourself this question when changing the look of the exterior of a car: "Can I wake up, every day, look out in my driveway, and not want to kill myself/puke."
This sounds like a terrible idea. If I saw someone driving down the street in one of those, I would laugh until I crashed my shiny red corvette, thus making me a danger to everyone else on the street. So let's also assume there are plenty of other people just like me.
You don't want to cause major traffic accidents by painting your car, do you?
