So my little adventure begins with me craving some refreshing Arizona green tea. Since the gas station is within about five minutes of walking, I decided to take a stroll down there to quench my thirst. Around my apartment building they have one area roped off because they put some sod down, so I avoid that area, there was another area roped off but no sod. I figured they roped it off to do some work later or something, so I went over the rope and onward.
I buy my tea, drink it and head on back the same way, when some old guy smoking a cigarette starts walking up to me and yelling at me.
He's cussing at me and telling me that area is roped off and this and that, and then demands my name and where I live. I respond, I'm not telling you that - so he responds he's going to follow me to see where I live and what apartment I go into.
Then he says lets go see the manager or something, so I was like Okay. So we start walking that way and he goes "Well the manager isn't here today"
So I said "Okay, you still wanna follow me to see where I live?" to which he responds that he's going to. So I decide to turn into a troll
IRL. I'm not one who takes kindly to being yelled at, so I decide to take him on a journey, since I had nothing better to do anyway.
Now the funny thing is that the door key for my apartment works in all 6 of the buildings where my apartments are located. So I went back to his apartment building and went up the stairs to the third floor, walked all the way to the end and went down the stairs and then back over to the other side to go back up the stairs again.
So he says "You're not going to lose me" and trying not to laugh, I continued on. Lose him? **** that, I'll wait for him if I have to, I wanted to see how long he was gonna follow me.
So going up and down 6 flights of stairs, he starts getting a little tired and goes really slow up the stairs the 6th time, so I wait for him and he says "You're going to have to go home sometime"
So I said, "You know come to think of it, I don't think this is even my building. Huh, I don't remember which building I live in, guess we better check all of them huh?"
So I went back down the stairs, him following right behind and I go up to the next set of buildings and go on in and continue going up and down the stairs of that building about 6 or 7 times, then off to the next building and up and down the stairs another 6 or 7 times.
Finally after a while he's just huffing, puffing, and wheezing trying to climb the stairs. So I wait up at the top of the stairs and he bends over a bit before saying "I bet you think you're really funny don't you?"
I smiled and said, "No sir, I think you're really funny. Anyway, it's not this building - so lets go to the next"
At this point he just says **** it and leaves. Meanwhile I go back to my apartment, with my wife wondering where I was for the last hour and half and this funny little story to tell.
So I called the manager today and told her about it. I told her that if he hadn't started yelling at me and acting like a dick, I wouldn't have done what I did, but even she found it a bit funny.
That old man is a creepy stalker. You let him follow you? I would have called the police. Seriously, he could have mugged or hurt you while you guys were alone.
I wasn't really worried, he might have been mad - but he didn't seem like he was going to resort to violence. He's a caretaker and apparently thought that this gave him some kind of position of authority.
So when I didn't answer his questions and he thought he'd just follow me to report me to the manager - who didn't really care. Not sure what he thought was going to happen, it's not like they're going to evict me cause I walked over a roped of area, instead of around it.
I did something kind of like this once, only I was the old man.
And instead of some guy walking on between some lines, some kids in a ****ty car threw a bottle at me from their car and hit me off my bike while I was taking some groceries home one night around midnight (I had the urge to make some quesadilla's). So I chased them around the neighborhood on my bike hiding in doorways making eye contact while standing really still, they spent a very long time trying to get home to drink the rest of their ****ing liquor (the bottle I got hit with was an empty vodka bottle) and I got to have some fun at their expense.
My parents used to live in this 55+ gated community. One evening I was driving out to visit them, and I didn't happen to have the code to the gate. It was pretty late, so I didn't want to wake my parents, so I simply waited out at the gate in my car until someone came up. I tried to tailgate this guy into the gate, but he ****ing STOPPED HIS CAR, causing the gate to close on my car, and then tried to give me a ****ing speech about how I was breaking the rules. The most amusing part of this story is that the insurance decided he was in the wrong.
Old people take themselves way more seriously than they should. You give them a little and they pretend like they're god damned JFK.
I would have walked straight to a police officer. While it would have been entirely his fauly, I'd feel pretty guilty if he gets a heart attack or false down the stairs. Besides, involving the police is going to be far more embarassing for him.
I tried to tailgate this guy into the gate, but he ****ing STOPPED HIS CAR, causing the gate to close on my car
I would have called 911. On you. You're someone who obviously doesn't know the access code to the gate, attempting to enter by tailgaiting.
Imagine going to your house, then some guy follows you in as you unlock the door.

You do realize how stupid of a comparison that is, right? I wasn't invading his personal property, and I actually did have a right to be there. He is not the police or some type of authority figure, he was outside of his rights.
Which is why he paid to get the dents removed and the paint redone on my car.

Like I said, I would have called 911 and reported someone who was trying to enter without the gate combo.
If you don't like that comparison, would you let someone who doesn't have a combo to your gated community in?

This does not, in any way, imply that tailgating someone into a gated community is right or will not be challenged by someone living in that community.
I had a similar incident. i was at the library with my kids it was library day and i was looking for a book to read and my daughter was acting up and i went to go get her.
this old man came out from behind one of the shelves and proceed to yell. i told him he could kindly mind his own business i wasn handling the situation.
i went to get my daughter on the other side of the aisle and he actually hit me with his shoulder. i should have gotten her and reported him to the cops there for assault but i didn't. didn't feel it was worth the effort.

One evening I was driving out to visit them . . . It was pretty late, so I didn't want to wake my parents.
I don't know the exact circumstances beyond this statement, but I think I would have called them, unless, you were trying to surprise them with a visit. Which, I have been known to do on occasion.

Had the kids at the mall one day, they were walking around and had one old man that said they were "playing hookey." Actually saw them with me, daughter said to me in front of him, "Dad wasn't that the man that escaped from the nursing home earlier on the news, shouldn't we tell the mall security?"
"You know what, I think you're right he is senile, because the both of you have off from school."
He tried to say something, I just said, "Get out of here and stop wasting my time."
We just walked out, with him just yammering.

Ambition must be made to counteract ambition.
Individualities may form communities, but it is institutions alone that can create a nation.

Here is my principle: Taxes shall be levied according to ability to pay. That is the only American principle.
Like I said, I would have called 911 and reported someone who was trying to enter without the gate combo.
If you don't like that comparison, would you let someone who doesn't have a combo to your gated community in?
Yes, because I couldn't honestly give a ****. What business is it of mine? I tend to keep my nose to myself.
I didn't know the gate password because, you know, things happen and sometimes details slip between the cracks. The folks forgot to mention it.
I'm pretty sure if the police showed up they would be more agitated by the fact that someone called them for something so stupid than by the actual incident itself.
This does not, in any way, imply that tailgating someone into a gated community is right or will not be challenged by someone living in that community.
Apparently it was strongly enough implied that I got over a thousand dollars poured into my car because some old fogey decided he was going to be a vigilante neighboorhood watchman.

too true. I get the feeling you can't tell a story these days without someone nit picking the hell out of it and calling fault on a detail that in retrospect can seem dumb but really is not the point of the story, this is a thread about "old people going postal" not "hey lets tell stories and have someone come along and play the i'm going to judge you card"

I'm not the one swearing up and down mouth frothing over what an old man did. Take a look at the thread again and look at who's the one ranting.

Sing lustily and with good courage.
Be aware of singing as if you were half dead,
or half asleep:
but lift your voice with strength.
Be no more afraid of your voice now,
nor more ashamed of its being heard,
than when you sang the songs of Satan.
You ought to be ashamed and feeling guilty about what you did, but clearly you don't feel so or at all. Even if you weren't less than pleasant with him (and despite the fact that he did what he did), in leading him on a trek up and down levels, it's hardly amusing and it's disappointing to hear and read that there are others that find this situation even slightly comical or all right.
Like I said, I would have called 911 and reported someone who was trying to enter without the gate combo.

This does not, in any way, imply that tailgating someone into a gated community is right or will not be challenged by someone living in that community.
People like you are why I hated doing deliveries at my last job. No one ordering would ever give mention they are in a gated community so I would tailgate in for deliveries. Every once in a while some self-entitled ****er would stop my sinister plans of delivering sandwiches in a timely manner.
And about people accusing op that he should feel bad: really? What the guy was doing was borderline illegal and a complete violation of op's privacy. You are not simply allowed to tail someone to their home for no good reason, they could easily argue you mean harm.
You ought to be ashamed and feeling guilty about what you did, but clearly you don't feel so or at all. Please explain how he forced the other guy to continue following him.
