No one said the kid had to tell the truth. He can even just say that his parents came up with it because they're losers. Or, he can grow up to be a fantastic magic player and just happen to have the same name as a lot of people's favorite card.
If the guy wants to name his kid Jace, I really see no problem with it. It's not a name that will be made fun of easily, and it's not a common name, which generally results in classmates really liking that name.
To the first bolded part: huh? Seems appropriate, yes, but opposite of what you're trying to convey. And the second: once other kids find out where the name came from, it is very easy to make fun of. What's worse, is that kids definitely will make fun of it and make fun of it hard, potentially making things bad for said kid.
To the first bolded part: huh? Seems appropriate, yes, but opposite of what you're trying to convey.
How is it opposite? If the kid doesn't want to tell people he's named after a magic card, he just comes up with something that makes his parents look like the crazy ones. I.e. anyone named "Flower" will just say their parents are hippies.

Highly doubtful as anyone who cares enough to know that Jace is a magic card will think it's pretty cool he's named after a magic card.
I can't remember where I read it but I'll look around. Still, seems like common sense, psychologically. Name a kid Bubba and he's got to deal with overcoming the preconceived stigmas that arise from that name every time he introduces himself or every time his name is read, called out, etc. Name a kid after a douchey card game character...

Yeah, sure. It's just that your previous example was amusing.

So this kid, Jace, as a young boy in middle school begrudginly confides the origins of his name to a close friend. The friend tells another friend, that friend tells a *****y, pretty, popular girl - end of story. We all know how middle school works and realistically, how drastic the effects of small things like this can be on the development of a person's life.
(I realize I'm taking all this to an extreme now; point being, I think naming a kid Jace is a bad idea.)
I don't see what would be wrong with Garruk, Chandra, or Sorin all sound pretty normal, but if I ever meet a Koth, Venser, Ajani I'd probably have to shake their hand.
P.S. Dakkon is such an awesome name.
Or shake them down for lunch money...

I'm gathering that your dislike of him naming the kid Jace comes from your dislike of Jace, period. Well, you can't please everyone.
Yeah, sure. It's just that your previous example was amusing.
Ah, gotcha.

This is absolutely true and I'm not debating that. I'm saying, if the kid is ashamed of his name or thinks it's stupid, he will do one of two things:
1) Go by his middle name or a nickname.
2) Never, ever reveal where his name came from.
All kids know that kids in middle school are cruel and stupid. They should know not to hand over information that could be used to make fun of them.
Man i like it i say go for it an a couple who play at my shop named there son Jace to

What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly — that is the first law of nature.- Voltaire
As a guy named Stardust (my parents were hippies too!), I can tell you that it's really not that bad having a ridiculous name. I've just gone by Steve most of my life, because it is good to have people take you seriously now and then. Anyone that ever found out my real name bugged me about it for a while maybe, but I'd argue it's actually good for a child to learn to deal with things like this. It's something that has no bearing on you as a person, so you need to learn to brush it off because it simply doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Mostly though, I'm glad I can make anyone smile at any time just by telling them my name!
I'm pretty sure this is from the Freakonomics book. Had the top 10 successful names and studies on how names like Lemonjello and Oranjello, or Winner and Loser affected their lives.

C'mon! It's not that lame! I'd rather be Stardust than Apple or whatever the stars are naming their kids these days!
But, seriously, yeah, it's my name. I use it as my Magic name more than anything these days, ever since my little brother divulged the info to about a dozen people at one FNM a few years back. Now it sort of follows me around because I changed my name with the DCI, so I'll show up to a new shop, say, "Hi, my name's Steve," then they post the pairings and someone yells out, "Who the hell is Stardust!?" ... I get some funny reactions.
I'd rather name him Jason and nickname him Jace. It just will make his life overall better. Chandra is a name I know a person named. They are older than the game of magic but it is a good name.
Don't name him because of the game. Name him because its a good name.

My favorite part about this thread is people not realizing that most of these names were, in fact, names (some of which were quite common in some area(s) during some time(s)) before MTG used them.

"Virtue, Jacques, is an excellent thing. Both good people and wicked people speak highly of it..."
One: This is neither here nor there, but IMO, it's just not a cool name. It sounds made up (and according to various name databases, it is despite there being more than a few people named that these days, unfortunately). I know a Jace and it doesn't help that he's an idiot.
Two: When that kid grows up, do you think he's gonna think it's cool that he's named after a Magic card? That he'll enjoy admitting that to people? That he'll thank his dad for it? That as a result, he too will love Magic the Gathering?
The answer to all these questions is invariably "no."
All names were "made-up" at some point.
Jace is a normal enough name that I doubt anyone will ever even ask him where it came from. Stardust . . . people would ask. My name is Trevor and nobody has EVER asked me where my name came from and I am 30.
Kids in middle school will find a way to make fun of any name. Being picked on in school is ubiquitous and the amount that you are picked on is far more dependent on many other factors than your name. A tall, athletic, smart, popular and confident kid named Butterfluff will be picked on less than a stupid, dorky, fat, smelly, quiet kid named John.
Your name has NOTHING to do with your level of intelligence. Please tell me where I can read this study and I will be happy to rip it apart as it is doubtlessly a poorly done study with massive bias and/or flaws.
This thread has inspired me to get a pet turtle and name him Emrakul

I think some people don't understand that the Mirrans are the bad guys. Arcbound Ravager is Mirran. Phyrexia are the good guys coming in to conquer an evil, evil world.
I've successfully convinced my wife to name our soon-to-be baby boy Sorin (okay, honestly she prefers the spelling Soren, but whatever). She has no clue where I came up with the name, and I'm afraid to tell her.
There have been studies to the contrary.
