Ok, so i'm not sure if this belongs in the debate thread or not, but here goes anyways. I'm 19, quite soon to be 20, and I have recently become interested in a girl who is 17. This spurned me to researching consent laws and sex laws in my state of Missouri.
What. The. Hell.
Apparently, If you are 21 or older, the age of consent is 17. However, if you are under the age of 21, the age of consent is only 14! That is absolutely ridiculous. I would also like to note that in this state, and i'm sure many others, gay sex and deviant sex (such as anal) is illegal.
Apparently, under my state law, I (a third year college student) can't have anal or sleep with another man, but I can legally and within my rights bust the hymen of a middle schooler.
Am I the only one that sees a problem with this?

Can I ask where you did this "research"? Becuase I can assure you sodomy is not illegal anywhere in the united states. There was even a supreme court case about it.
You're in a midwestern state, this should really come as no shock. Despite the fact that 1 out of every 3 straight men and 1 out of every 4 straight women has had anal sex*, many people still consider it to be some kind of deviant or impure taboo. Some people have very traditional values, and they tend to be clustered in the Midwest and Southern states. There's nothing wrong with having "conventional" values, but it does make the laws in these states seem odd, confusing, and contradictory sometimes.
If you are under 21, anything 14+ is fair game. If you are 21+, everything 17+ is fair game.
Ah, I was mistaken as to the deviant sex. You are indeed correct in that those laws were repealed in 2003 by a massive supreme court case.
The age of consent laws are still valid though. I still believe it's a flawed system where a third year college student is within his rights to sleep with a middle schooler. :/

The last year that I lived in South Carolina (2008), the age of consent was lowered to 14 (from 16). And it surprises me that there's another state that has that ridiculously low age of consent.

Where are we going and why are we in this hand-basket??
TBH, if you were to read the laws for all the states and the fed govt. too, you will find so many laws that make ridiculously little sense. Often times laws are passed to pinpoint specific problems and then they are left on the books for years after they become nearly irrelevant. In the case of MO, given the geographical location and the historic cultural stereotypes (I know, right?), this particular law seems to exemplify the distinction between being a minor and being an adult. I know the magic number is 18 for adulthood, but it is commonly referred to as "half-legal" (maybe because of drinking laws?).
It does seem to need an update, but that won't happen until that law can be demonized in the right light. Because until the people are led, they will remain ignorant...

Are sex laws based on old ways of thinking? Uh, yeah.
I have no issue with any sex between consenting parties.
Missouri's consent ages seem about right to me. The idea of a 14 year old having sex kinda creeps me out, but that isn't my business.
(On a somewhat related note I live in an apartment with very thin walls and the internet meme "Surprise buttsecks!!" isn't just on the internet anymore. Man that girl sounded pissed off.)
Sodomy and gay sex are NOT illegal anywhere in the United States. Just want to make sure you know this. Even before 2003, such laws were hardly enforced. But as of 2003, the case Lawrence v. Texas made it official.
I really think it's just because there are like 5 pregnant girls at my old high school and 2 are freshmen, so they're 14 and 15, but there boyfriends are like 16 and 15 if I remember right. If they hadn't changed the law those 16 and 15 year old boys would be tried for rape. I think the only reason it's at 14 is because that's when kids hit high school and try these things could you imagine the amount of "rape" cases courts would have if they prosecuted ever 16 year old guy who slept with a 14 year old girl and such. I believe that 14 and 21 is very disturbing. Here I believe it's something like if you're 14 you can consent to anyone 14-18, and 16 can consent to anybody 14-21 or something weird like that.

Anal sex feels great.
Unannounced anal sex does not.
Man, though, it's interesting seeing how some of these things are viewed in other parts of the world and how things I think of as being downright vanilla can be viewed as deviant. Course, I'm also the person who responded to the news of a friend of mine becoming the sub in a gay lifestyle D/s relationship by giving him advice on serving his master so I'm really not one who sees anything consensual as deviant. Although if it counts, I was mildly surprised once at a friend coming out as straight (this one was more contextual though since she was the only straight person in a room full of lesbians and bisexuals), so there you go.
I think innocent people should be "protected" from older predators (and I really have a problem with child molesters...that's worse than most homicides imo), so there should be a law in place. However, there should be a case-by-case consideration because numbers, like drinking/gambling/driving, don't justify the PERSON.
I know 20 and 30 something year olds who lack maturity found in 17/18 year olds. Yet there are also issues of being naive/unaware/misleading/unsure-of-what-they-want/parents-rightfully-guide-their-kids angles that shoot much of the "gee it's common sense" material down.
Overall this turns out to be a numbers game. Some of these laws are arbitrary and archaic...like leftovers from colonial/prairie lifestyles. 20 +14 doesn't work for me. Then again, the same age gap of 30 + 24 does. Context and perspective is key.

I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.
Don't get me wrong, as i'm sure 99% of internet users are, i've got my own host of fetishes and preferences. But what happens *in* the bedroom is entirely irrelevant to *who* is in said bedroom.
A 14 year old is easily manipulated. Mentally, they are not mature enough to handle the manipulative (or alcoholically aided) advances of a bloody college student! This strikes me as absolutely unreasonable.

This reminds me. When I was 17 I started dating a 15 year old (Yes we kept the age difference hidden.) Then I turned 18 before she turned 16. Thats was a bit of an oups. Her parents knew of the age difference. Mine didnt. Her friends did. Not one other person.
We didn't have sex (She said she'd rather wait until she was 18, which I agreed too.) But I seriosuly was scared of w/e could happen if people knew (Her sister's boyfriend managed to inbox me something on facebook even if we aren't FB friends.)
I know 14 and 20 and 11 month is really unreasonable, but I don't think 16 and 18 is. I know my case looked bad, that why I sorta kept it hidden.
There should be a like between X and Y the minimum age is 3 years younger until both parties are 18 or older.
beyond age, consent, and public space, I don't see why any laws for sex are required. sex all to often is something done behind closed doors obviously and shouldn't be anyone elses business, especially the states.
