Why does that make me horribly sad right now. i mean it isn't if the history and military channels haven't been running the war for independance all week long, and a bunch of times every other month.
sorry i am really interested in american history up until about WWII.
this is stuff that every 1st or even 2nd grader should know. *sigh* my daughter starts kindergarden next month

This is actually pretty good for Americans, relatively speaking. A lot of the time you'll see this sort of thing (polls on US history in general) come back with way worse numbers.
Of course, it's pretty depressing that this is "good".
I wonder, did they give credit for the close but slightly inaccurate answers of "England" and "the UK"?
Too bad they didn't poll me and the rest of the military, I bet half my troops would screw this one up. Its a sad state when you forgot what your country had to go through for freedom. Too many of my fellow Americans take it all for granted.
HAPPY 4th!!!!!!!
P.S. - Still love my brothers from across the pond!!!

Why wouldn't they give credit for that?
That would be like saying, "NO! The question is inaccurate because it wasn't the USA that gained independence IT WOULD NOT BECOME THE USA UNTIL THE CONSTITUTION WAS SIGNED!"
Well, because the UK didn't exist yet (having not absorbed Ireland), and England was a component of GB following the Acts of Union. The Kingdom of Great Britain was the proper name of the country in 1776, so if they were being real sticklers (read: jerks), that'd be the only one that'd count.

Well, as long as we agree they would be jerks for doing so, then I'm with you on this one.

I was actually thinking the same :/. I also agree I wonder how much these kind of polls are skewed with joke technicalities.
It's not that big a deal. It's obviously not something that people need to know to go about their daily lives, and you have to accept that most people just aren't that interested in old wars.
And the whole thing about knowing how hard the struggle for freedom was is a joke compared to countries that have had to fight to escape from real tyranny, as opposed to slightly aggressive taxation.
It's not a big deal, you're right, but anyone that has spent time in public school should know this, plain and simple.

I'm sorry, fighting against Great Britain was a joke? Really now?

What!?
You know what? Its not a big deal, lets just forget all the old wars and those who died for them. The American Revolution, what was that? War of 1812, when was that fought again? Who cares about the civil war? The great world wars: who was Archduke Ferdinand? Who was Hitler? Who was Benito Mussolini? Joseph Stalin? The war of the roses? George Washington? Queen Elizabeth? The Russian Revolution? Ect. Ect. These are not importent people or events and did nothing to impact our daily life... End sarcasm.
I really hope you were joking, because thats a problem today; history and its importance takes a back seat. It may not be needed in day to day life but it should be known in general.
(I just ratled off some important people and events off the top of my head. They may or may not have anthing to do with America but are important in one way or another in some way. I know that many other people exist and have had an impact on the world we live in and involved in many countries around the world. Respect.)
I REFUSE to call the holiday "the 4th of july", because I'm convinced that some Americans don't even know that the holiday is about independence. So, I call the holiday "INDEPENDENCE day" every time.
As to the particulars of the poll, I'm hardly surprised. The state education system is just embarrassing.
There is something even worse. I saw someone who didn't know that the U.S. was bordered by canada to the north. Either way this is sad because america has no unifiying force anymore.
It's not commonly called "Independence Day" because we aren't capable of embracing wars today that don't have some thoroughly demonized perpetrator as our opposition. Americans still get upset about Nazis, Communists, Saddam, and Militant Muslims. Redcoats what? England is just a nice place to visit now.
For the past few year Independence Day has always been secondary to Juneteenth. I'm not trying to be anti-patriotic but it celebrates the day when Black folks in Texas found out they were free and it was more than two years after the Emancipation Proclaimation was issued. I get why Independence Day is celebrated but it sticks in my craw that people had to be told they were free rather than freedom being considered natural among all men. The Declaration of Independence says all men are created equal yet it took amendments to the US Constitution to give basic rights to all men(and women!).

I mean, really now, Tiax?
If they did I think the number of other things guessed would be higher I think. There's no way they'd count England as wrong.
I'm thinking they gave multiple options like:
A) Spain
B) Great Britain
C) France
D) Unsure
and maybe some people just weren't sure about Great Britain or something and would've picked England had it been there.
These are depressing.
