Hey, I need some help finding a free software. When I go on youtube and see these people posting videos up of them playing video games on their computer or w.e, I always wonder how they do it. Anyone know of some good software that will record what i do on my comp as a video file...for free?

And you, too, are one of us, and yet you are not. In your words I hear anger, hatred. I see a darkness that is not cold and lifeless, but is alive and moving, like a living entity. I feel caged, trapped, a yearning for escape. --Death Gate Cycle Volume 3: Fire Sea

Depends on what you want to record.
If you wanty to record console games you need to ether:
A) Get an emulator that can read discs or ISO's and use Camtasia / Fraps / hypercam.
B) Get a Video Capture Card/Device and use the software that comes with it.
I cant define free BUT I do use the following:
Pinnacle Studio 12
Windows Movie Maker
Camtasia 5
Camtasia 6
Fraps
Hypercam
Audacity
Adobe Flash Media Encoder
Also soon to be using a few more.
If you use a capture device research them well cause the best ones can cost near 500...
Also Make sure your comp can handle doing Games and Recording at the same time if doing PC games or the comp can handle the program to record the console games.
I use OBS in tandem with my Elgato capture card if I'm running something from console and there are SO MANY tutorials on YouTube for OBS and the various things you can do with it. I've been using it for over two years now and I'm still learning about new features and things I can do with it.
As for editing, Premiere Pro is top notch, but if you can't afford the license/lease for it, check out HitFilm 4. HitFilm is a free software that works to combine a video editor and a video compositor (like trying to mix Premiere Pro with After Effects). There are some pretty good tuts for HitFilm on YouTube as well.
When it comes to free recording software, I recommend OBS. Though it takes some getting used to and a lot of messing with the settings. OBS has my recommendation, and I've heard from friends VSDC Video Editor is good, but I've never tried it.

just a quick look up, but google Fraps. It's free and I've used it to record my gameplay on the PC.
