Well I always thought it was a bit silly how certain words are considered "bad". Watch George Carlin's routine to see how stupid the "bad" word deal is.
It can be a bit crude to use them every other word but really I could care less if someone uses it casually.
I think like any word overuse is just annoying, it would be the same to me if someone said dude every 4 words compared to a swear every 3-4 words.
I've had to cut down on my cussing considerably for a long time. I work retail and you don't want to accidently let one slip. Now I have to really make a conscious effort if I want to cuss. I don't like the idea of swearing either it just cheapens my image of someone if they swear constantly in normal every day speech.

I don't have any hard numbers on this, but I'm targeted more often than a black guy driving a beat-up sedan with a broken tail-light and no license plate, and Cy's well aware of that.
See that's what i agree with, it's not that swearing necessarily offends me but that it just makes that those who use such language need a bigger vocabulary or something of the sort :/
All this being said, religion plays a big role in my opinion of the matter i believe.
I'm almost certainly the most articulate person I know, and I have no problems with cursing. I always feel like the sort of people who buy that cliche are the same ones who think that every bully is secretly insecure. Life isn't as simple as our kindergarten teachers taught us.
If the social stigma about these words wasn't so big, especially growing up, cuss words wouldn't be any different then any other word. I use them mostly around good friends, but never overly so. Around certain people, or types of people I try to avoid it, like authority figures, family, or sensitive people. To me, it is no big deal.

banner by god child. he'd make you one too, if you weren't so bad at posting.
I work at a tutoring school. Guess what? Restraint matters. No matter what buttons are pressed, you maintain composure. Worst case, you be light about the hellaciousness (yes, that is not a word) with something like "Shut up!"
That aside, among friends, we casually swear. It's nothing big, but we don't openly go around cussing each other, other people, or randomly. That'd just be indecent. Watch your mouth at the right times, though otherwise swearing becomes rather colloquial, when you break it down.
The words exist in the English language for a reason. As long as they're used appropriately, and in appropriate situations, I have no problem using or hearing them. I do, however, have a problem with people who pepper their sentences with swearing just for sake of swearing.
I swear a lot. A whole lot. Posting in forums is a struggle to edit my natural manner of speaking. My language IRL will kill small animals and wither plants.
However, I do not swear at people, ever. Not so much as I don't think people should be sworn at as much as I use swear words as my own ~desu.

i'll curse like a sailor around my close friends. other ppl, i try to avoid it since they probably don't want to here stuff like, "Who the **** is calling me now on my cell???".
I'm polite, but beware: If your in the same room as I am, when I am playing video games, you better be alright with swearing.
Well first of all, I would like to say that I do not view swearing over the internet and swearing in real life the same way. On the internet, I often take swearing really lightly. The entire purpose of cursing has always been to prove the user more "badass" than anyone else. This makes sense if you're in a gangster living in Harlem. It makes sense if you're an abusive husband. It even makes sense if you're just the kid in your group that intimidates the others; but on the internet, it's pointless.
Many people swearing on the internet couldn't be more harmless in real life and even those who are really tough, they're not going to pop up from the computer screen and strangle me. The intention of a swearer is often to threaten and it is hard to find anything over the internet (in most places at least) threatening. You're not going to pin someone on the floor by swearing and you're not going to get people to do what you want. In the internet, people will only back down if they 1) have been convinced otherwise or 2) they don't want anymore negative reputation. In this perspective, swearing is more of an annopyance than anything else. People who use it seem more discourteous and harder to get along with but nothing else. I also dislike how the censor censors. **** is meh...
On the other hand, in real life, I will take swearing quite heavily depending on who is directing it towards me and in what tone. I find swearing offensive in the view that a person is trying to coerce me to do what they want. It certainly does intimidate me but it usually just gets to me avoid the pursuer instad of actually doing what he wants.
I would tell people to act the same way when someone tells them not to say certain words as when someone tells them not to do anything else. Search for reason, context, or motivation in their request, or more likely, demand, that you act in the way the want you to. Your behavior, speech, appearance, etc. is all your property, and you should protect it. So if someone wants some stock in those things that belong to you, you need to know why.
After that speech, if the person is still listening to me, I clue them in on the little detail that the entire concept of quote/unquote bad language, comes to us from the lovely world of institutionalized religion.
I love swearing. It turns the smallest folly such as stubbing your toe into a riot. It adds emphasis to serious and humorous situations alike. What's not to love?
I try not to swear at all because it just lowers people's opinion of you. A few people said something like "It's ridiculous that people think there's something wrong, they're just words," but the fact is that language is defined by the speakers, and certain words are very impolite and improper. Just like I wouldn't speak with horrible grammar, I wouldn't curse.
Cursing is something I have just grown with. It's just the perfect way to express many feelings. Like, I could be confused and go wtf is going on, or I could be mad at someone and go wtf are you doing. Its just great.
Normally, most people hold back from using curse words in public, censoring has made cursing almost a taboo, where only the dregs of society say bad words. When we all know, that a good majority of us curse all the time. Censoring tries to "shelter" curse words from the youth, then explain why I've been cursing since I was five, you just need to see a movie rated pg-13 to pick up most of Carlin's 7 words you can't say on tv. Curses are just words, that I use a **** load of.

This childhood taught arguement is a very poor one. It's ridiculous to infer, assume, or imply, that someone is less intelligent, or should be more intelligent based on their choice to use explicatives. I understand that using those words leaves impressions in the minds of others, but it's ignorant to think that someone needs a larger vocabulary based on the selection of words they use.
People will use the words that express their emotions. Cuss words are a way for them to express themselves. "I unfortunately compressed my toe when it collided with the couch" vs. "****, I just stubbed my toe on that ****ing couch!" The second example portrays their emotion better, making it a more expressive sentence than the first, more vocabulary-utilizing, example.
Conversely, I think those who choose not to use explicatives should expand their vocabulary to include such colorful and descriptive language.
I'd just like to say that I find more offensive (insofar as I will not utter them myself) certain words that are not censored on these forums, such as *****, as opposed to the "worst" swears like **** and **** and, well, you get the picture. I think the distinction is that I am more bothered by words that are used to degrade people, as opposed to expressing anger generally.

To be fair, '*****' does have a non-vulgar definition. Just because that definition is not often used does not mean it might not ever be used in some context on these boards.
And just to add a little more relevancy: I hardly ever curse but not for any moral reasons. I just sound as unconvincing as Mel Gibson in Signs when I do. My wife, however, can say things that would make a sailor blush.
Conversely, I think those who choose not to use explicatives should expand their vocabulary to include such colorful and descriptive language.
That comment made me smile.
I swear when I am around others that do not find it offensive. I often find swearing a great way to emphasize a feeling or statement. Also, I feel swearing at people is worse than swearing in expressing your thoughts. i.e. You're a **** head -vs- oh ****, I forgot to close the garage door.
When I am in certain social situations, at work, or around children I make an effort not to swear.
Personally, I think there are a lot of non-swear words that are just as damaging, but I guess its all a matter of perspective (but what isn't?). I for one am not a fan of the word CAN'T, but most people use it quite a bit....

EDIT: My apologies for not censoring those words. Completely slipped my mind... Thanks for making the changes.
I never swoor until I worked in a kitchen. 4 years of being in the back of the house evolved my vocabulary to include swear words in most sentences (without even realizing it). Stuff like, "Man, that pie was so ****k. I do let swear words slip out every now and again, but usually there's no one around me. I do say "Crap" a lot. Is that even a swear word? It's more of a comedic word like "Poop" because 'Frank' (RIP Peter Boyle) said it all the time on Everybody Loves Raymond. "Holy crap!"
Hey, did you ever see Short Circut? Of course you have, don't try to deny it. The first time I saw it was on cable and the part where they're out on the prarie and he's trying to figure out if Number 5 can think or not, and realizes it can, so he said, "Holy cow!" and Number 5 said, "Where cow? I don't see a cow." I thought that was the best line the movie. Then I bought it on DVD and noticed the line was actually "Holy ****!" "Where ****? I don't see ****." It was not nearly as funny as the cable version.
I've had to cut down on my cussing considerably for a long time. I work retail and you don't want to accidently let one slip. Now I have to really make a conscious effort if I want to cuss. I don't like the idea of swearing either it just cheapens my image of someone if they swear constantly in normal every day speech.
I totally agree. Since starting to work in a corporate environment you realise that it's extremely rude to swear.
I used to swear, but not excessively and nowadays I cringe when I have a conversation with someone and every fourth word is eff this and effing that.
It really is an indicator of their class and background when they overuse swearing and vulgar language. A witty comment can be so much more effective and refreshing than resorting to swearing.
Alas, it's something you only realise as you mature.
For me, swearing is an emotional expression. Saying "oh fishsticks!" or "oh crap!" when you stub your toe, or hit your head on something, or something in general bad happens, just doesn't cut it. It's an emotional outlet, when you use a stronger word for a stronger feeling, you make yourself feel better. Sure, your head is still throbbing after you mother f'er at it, but somehow, your mind feels better about it, like you did something about it even if you really didn't and can't. Probably doesn't make sense to everyone, but it works for me. I do try and remember to keep it down around children and such.
I just wanted to know what people think of it or if no one else thinks about it but me haha
It can be a bit crude to use them every other word but really I could care less if someone uses it casually.
