Methinks Maokun is a mafia noob (at least on this forum) and doesn't know how mafia here is suppose to work. IRL and on IRC... retaliatory voting happens all the time.... cuz I see it all the time. Then again... I only play with bored otakus and a bot script... and then there's the occasional game of Wolf with ppl at the LGS... So what do I know?
@Stardust: RVS voting is RVS voting... Didn't feel a response was required...

wait, y'all just let people OMGUS without providing reasons?
or do these people actually provide a proper defense for themselves, shooting holes in their opponent's argument before voting them
Retaliatory voting is an OMGUS vote. On these forums, it's looked at as poor form. But I'm saying that where I've played elsewhere, it's perfectly fine. And with noobs on these forums, it would not surprise me if it happened.
unvote; vote maokun a little self-aware, aren't we?
Horribly self aware about what exactly? That he is new to the site so doesn't know the meta. Heck due to the crafters the same could be said of half the game.
Whats Maokan done to ping you so badly to sick a vote on him so quickly.

See, I didn't know that. I was talking mostly from my experiences with IRL Werewolf where retaliation occurs mostly from townies that believe a werewolf is trying to get rid of them since only werewolves know exactly how they are voting.
Heh, I don't even know what "RVS" is... so many acronyms.
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.

Heh, I don't even know what "RVS" is... so many acronyms.
RVS is the "Random Voting Stage" You would do well to read the stickies at the top of the forum and familiarize yourself with the acronyms, roles, and rules of mafia.
Voting someone for no reason other than voting you is typically looked upon as a "scummy" action. Generally, RVS goes on until someone makes a "slip" that may indicate their alignment.
Your abstaining from RVS and threatening an OMGUS vote puts me on edge, thus my voting for you.
I also find it curious that you didn't stick to your original plan of voting for the first person to vote you, despite originally thinking that it was a valid plan based on your experience with real-life Werewolf games.

I've read a lot of guides and some other Mafia threads, but i have yet to see one where they explain all the acronyms.
Anyway, I decided not to go with my plan of voting retaliative after being pointed that's considered scummy behavior around here. Since apparently abstaining from vote may also seem scummy, I'll point my finger to the first name I see after scrolling up once.

What's with the white-knighting, yo?
It's the first major flurry in this game post RVS that happened and the guest of honor only had a single post at that point. Just wanted to know what it was hanging on. Granted the now Psuedo random vote he has shoved on you is a bit more interesting than a abstention from RVS

Your defense of Maokun and attempt to smear me with his scummy actions make me question your alignment pretty strongly.
Even though we are out of the RVS stage, I still see a lot of players posting as if they are still involved in RVS, making these past couple pages difficult to read. With as many noobs that are in this game, it doesn't surprise me.

Yes... we can pretty much expect a lot of scumtells to be null with all the new players in this normal... Thanks Kank...
You're welcome!
I checked back with all of the Normal Mafia games ran this year, and in every single one on Day 1, a townie was lynched.
The odds are that whoever everyone jumps on today will most likely be a townie as well.
I'm perfectly content with leaving my vote on the (currently) not-playing Iso.

*sigh* I wonder if it's more fun to host a game and watch it unfold or actually play in a game... I want to attempt to host a game, but min requirement is to actually play a few games first... Though looking at the hosting list... it'll be a while before I can subject this forum to my anime based mafia games. I saw a few that piqued my interest like NGE mafia, Arcadic's recently ended Suzumiya Haruhi mafia and Magical Girl mafia.
Anyway, with so many people (half of which are absent), it might be a while before we actually get a train going... Or if the noobs are too noobeh, then it won't be too long before we get this train wreck going...

I don't actually know the answer to that. When or if that happens, I would consider it safer to unvote captaineddie and vote Iso just for clarity!

I have quite a few Mafia game ideas actually, the two strongest of which are based on two specific different movies. When it came to table top RPG's, I was always more proficient at running games than playing in them.
So, still no word from Seppel and captaineddie.
Does anyone know if either of them are in Hurricane Sandy zones by any chance?
@Maokun: The random voting stage (RVS) is a point in the game (at the start) where no-one has really got any reads on anyone, and are just voting for fun. But eventually someone slips up, or someone thinks someone slipped up, at which point more serious conversation ensues and people start voting each other for actual reasons. There is no demarcated line of 'This is the end of RVS', it is something that happens gradually and naturally.
But I think there are now enough indications that the RVS is over, so I would like to ask everyone to just stop talking about different things and start playing the game. Or at least, I would like everyone to give their views on what's happening in the game (like, do you think anyone's post is indicative of their alignment, etcetera). Let's get this game going.
See, I didn't know that. I was talking mostly from my experiences with IRL Werewolf where retaliation occurs mostly from townies that believe a werewolf is trying to get rid of them since only werewolves know exactly how they are voting.

Personally I've never really seen why OMGUS voting is actually scummy anyway. Like, it seems like one of those things people say is scummy because it's stupid, so it's a way to discourage it. Only people who are gonna seriously OMGUS vote as scum are ridiculously noobish - not even new, just incapable of seeing the impact of such a thing. And at that point they're as likely to do it as town because it's emotional.

I don't think "because townies usually get lynched I'm not gonna vote for anyone" is very reasonable. Townies getting lynched day one lets you check the wagon for the weakest justifications, and helps you scumhunt. It's virtually always protown to lynch SOMEBODY. I think I remember you saying you're kinda new at Mafia, is that true?

There's probably an acronym for this that I don't know, but a surprisingly effective, kind of scummy tactic in games with new people is to gain town cred by saying neutral things that clarify game rules/game states/strategy/etc. I do it all the time. It's protown in the most surface way possible, but it is often a scum thing to do. The whole "I'd encourage people to start saying real things and actually playing" with no content meeting that description makes this look like cheap town point scoring. Thoughts?
Yeah, I agree that harvesting good will is a good scum strategy. However, as you yourself said, getting on with the game and getting a lynch is a positive thing for town, while generating chaos, misleading and creating dissension is scum's profession. Hell, with so many random and jokey votes I'd say we hardly have any kind of good hints yet so I think that regardless Wessel being scum or not, his advice is of utility to us.

This "/barn" post doesn't read very natural to me. Why even post it? It looks like a post that is simply there to make you seem more townish (wanting to get the game started and investigate people, when in reality Wessel's post probably would have started that with or without your little /barn).
For all I am finding I.B a little more aggressive and sensitive than he has been in other games I have to agree with him.
Eron why the vote? Despite having a quote that is ultimately a barn to move the game on a bit your vote is nude. Of the pair why did you go for I.Baloth who merely agreed with the sentiment as opposed to Wessel who suggested it.
Wessel's post essentially says "stop joking, start posting reads". Infectious barns it but provides no reads or commentary of his own. It appears that IB is attempting to come across as helpful town by barning something that comes from a town mentality, but actually does what he was barning in the post, (I.e. not posting any real content)
Not being able to work with anything here yet, I decided to start checking past games for patterns of behavior, and have found that infectiousbaloth has a habit of getting aggressive early, which often leads to a quick barnwagon that gets him lynched and then he ends up flipping town. (See Clan Mafia game for a recent example of this.)
I can't find a game where he's been scum before actually.
So, I'll pose a question to him then:
infectiousbaloth: Is this business as usual for you here, or are you actually scum this time around and merely using the same pattern of behavior?

I got no anti-noob bias; you don't look confused here. I think you'll probably be good at this game, actually.
I do have anti-"please don't think I'm scummy if I do X" bias, though. And - for example - I haven't voted yet, but I'm not making a show of not voting yet. A lot of new players don't want to die early in their first game, so it could be that. On the other hand, it could be...
I've read a lot of guides and some other Mafia threads, but i have yet to see one where they explain all the acronyms.

Oh, well if you thought it was still RVS for everyone, then it makes more sense. I thought it was clear RVS was ending, but aparently that sentiment was not shared by everyone, you included.
I wouldn't really call that retaliating. Do you think you're retaliating?
------------
IB's /barn didn't feel off to me. I don't believe barning in of itself is a scummy action, as it is simply a quick way of stating that you mirror someone's sentiments.
@EtR and Tom: Do you think IB's barning of Wessel is more attempting to seem helpful than Wessel's original post? Actually, it's clear you do, but why?
Oh I totally get that me posting so much already is putting a target sign on my back, from either townies willing to jump on the Kankwagon because I seem to be so scummy, or from nervous scummers worried that I might be too active and able to root them out.
I'm here to learn more about the game and have fun while doing it.
I think a few folks have asked why IB over Wessel so I'll make this a general post. Wessel, IMO, was marking official transition from RVS to regular play for anyone that may have been unclear. IB on the other hand was quick to jump on the "I'm a helpful townie too guys" wagon. There's a clear difference in the reasoning for the posts.
To take it a step further, IB called me out in his "strong reasoning" post. No comments as to anything else occurring, no read as to why I voted and nothing else, just a snappy post to rebuke mine. Coming shortly after he barned a post that called for more reads and less jokes seems scummy.
Oh I totally get that me posting so much already is putting a target sign on my back, from either townies willing to jump on the Kankwagon because I seem to be so scummy, or from nervous scummers worried that I might be too active and able to root them out.

wait, y'all just let people OMGUS without providing reasons?
or do these people actually provide a proper defense for themselves, shooting holes in their opponent's argument before voting them
what is your definition of "retaliatory voting"

To start playing this here game.
when you vote for someone purely because they voted for you and with no other substantial reason
it means "omg you suck" and is from MS.
Horribly self aware about what exactly? That he is new to the site so doesn't know the meta. Heck due to the crafters the same could be said of half the game.
Whats Maokan done to ping you so badly to sick a vote on him so quickly.
Unvote the crafters

Heh, I don't even know what "RVS" is... so many acronyms.
What's with the white-knighting, yo?
I think LampDwellr sums this up pretty nicely.
Why are you so quick to come to Maokun's defense?
Yes... we can pretty much expect a lot of scumtells to be null with all the new players in this normal... Thanks Kank...
If it's your first game on these forums, raise your hand...

Vote LampDwellr
Well, I'm a lady and this is the Internets.
It's the first major flurry in this game post RVS that happened and the guest of honor only had a single post at that point. Just wanted to know what it was hanging on. Granted the now Psuedo random vote he has shoved on you is a bit more interesting than a abstention from RVS
@IB: I didn't read any more into Moakon's post than you attempting to explain away your self-voting habit thats got you into a few problems recently.

If your looking at it the same way (newb thinking retaliatory voting is normal and okay), then why is it odd? And what's up with that Iso vote?
Ah, so you were serious about retaliating. Did none of those guides/threads explain that to you? And why are you trying to appease us by random voting when we are no longer at that stage?
Its odd in that while I am thinking the same way, I still always wonder if mao is maybe using newness as an advantage here.
I know that I used the newbie card before, even though I knew what was going on....
Odd probably wasnt the right word now that I think about it...
540 Peasant cube- Gold EditionSomething SpicyNice smear attempt.
I self-vote. I do it in virtually every game I'm in. It's gotten me into trouble exactly once. I vote for myself during RVS because it's an easy way of checking in.
I wanna hear from SepSep.
If captaineddie ends up getting swapped out for Iso, then it will count at that time!
He must be /barn'ing my non-vote.
after checking the archives, apparently this is my sixth game of mafia. But it feels like the first since my last game was over 5 years ago
If captaineddie ends up getting swapped out for Iso, does my vote on captaineddie transfer to Iso?
Excuse me? I don't see any post officially ending the RVS phase (though lots of speculative "is this the end of RVS?") You are now decidedly picking at straws no matter what I do/don't do and such dogged, baseless insistence is kind of telling. Since this seems like a bit more info than the 0 I had when I pointed LampDwellr, I might as well change my vote.
Unvote; Vote Misting
Of course now you'll say I'm retaliating.
Anyway, with so many people (half of which are absent), it might be a while before we actually get a train going... Or if the noobs are too noobeh, then it won't be too long before we get this train wreck going...

Will catch up tomorrow, sorry.
I know the general idea of where seppel is and I dont believe sandy hit their. I was closer to where it hit....
Its been 60 hours, so we can put a prod in....

~~~~~~~~~
Interesting! I know why it'd be 75/25 or so in favor of a townie getting lynched, but why do you think it's 100%? That's a lot.
I don't think "because townies usually get lynched I'm not gonna vote for anyone" is very reasonable. Townies getting lynched day one lets you check the wagon for the weakest justifications, and helps you scumhunt. It's virtually always protown to lynch SOMEBODY. I think I remember you saying you're kinda new at Mafia, is that true?
~~~~~~~
Thoughts?

Strong reasoning.
Eron why the vote? Despite having a quote that is ultimately a barn to move the game on a bit your vote is nude. Of the pair why did you go for I.Baloth who merely agreed with the sentiment as opposed to Wessel who suggested it.

Yes, this is my first official Mafia game so feel free to label me with whatever sort of noob Post-It notes you desire. Be sure not to consider me using humor or sarcasm as a tell in either direction, because that's how I always am 24/7. (Feel free to check back in any of my 10,000+ posts.)
It's way too early for me to get a read on anyone yet, and no, I'm not going to jump off a bridge just because everyone else is doing it.
One of my all-time pet peeves is people who commit to playing a game and then never show up to play it.
With that said, I'll place my official vote on whoever shows up LAST, between Seppel and captaineddie.
If by any chance, I see that someone else strikes me as a better candidate before either one of them posts, then by all means, I'll reserve my option to change my mind at that time.

This "/barn" post doesn't read very natural to me. Why even post it? It looks like a post that is simply there to make you seem more townish (wanting to get the game started and investigate people, when in reality Wessel's post probably would have started that with or without your little /barn).
I can't find a game where he's been scum before actually.
So, I'll pose a question to him then:
infectiousbaloth: Is this business as usual for you here, or are you actually scum this time around and merely using the same pattern of behavior?
* Kankennon turns on bright flood lights to gauge reaction to question...
Sure. Anyway, Do you have anything observational to say?
~~~~
Why is infectiousbaloth's post worse than Wessel's in your opinion?
~~~~
Vote: Kankennon
I'm here to learn more about the game and have fun while doing it.
If that leads to my early grave, then so be it.
To take it a step further, IB called me out in his "strong reasoning" post. No comments as to anything else occurring, no read as to why I voted and nothing else, just a snappy post to rebuke mine. Coming shortly after he barned a post that called for more reads and less jokes seems scummy.
That is not why I am voting you and not why I said I was voting you, fwiw
Unvote, Vote IB
