Except, Kraj, the town didn't cooperate at all and the scum dominated. Amusingly, one player put forth the logical plan on cooperating through the mechanic (and making the vote public)....and he was scum and was rejected.
Town's have a major cooperation problem to the point where, without night communication, they tend to be enormously inefficient with formulating team strategies and roles that require teamwork to be effective.

In short the essenence of the game is an informed, cooperating minority versus an uninformed, disorganized majority. I think encouraging towns to cooperate via game design will never work out the way a designer expects because it requires players to act against the nature of the game.
Yeah, this is the problem I was dancing around in my head. I think encouraging cooperation between small numbers of individuals could work, but I'm still working on the how.
I think the best way to encourage cooperation is probably to put large quantities of publicly available information into play - via devices such as NPCs. UI/Ewie has actually taken that idea and run with it a tiny distance over on goodgamery, which greatly added to the discussion. He used a $ system where players can purchase abilities from NPCs to find alignments and allow last-posts from dead players.
Similar ploys may work nicely, here.
I'm thinking about how to use NPCs right now. I haven't got much, but I'm confident I'll have some cool stuff by the time my turn to host roles around again.
Update on the Google Wave discussion that I for some reason started in the council thread instead of here: I'm currently reviewing a game by Skander and we're using Wave. It's only been up a half day or so, but already I can tell it's awesome. Those of you looking to collaborate on setups, definitely check it out.

I can definitely confirm this - it's a lot easier to address specific issues without losing sight of the big picture and the whole overall experience is a lot smoother. Everybody collaborating on a setup should definitely give it a shot.

In view of recent events in the Ghost Mafia thread, it may be worth a reminder to our newer players of the rule against PM quoting which most mods use, and especially of the reason behind the rule, because the question of whether something is a PM quote often comes down to the purpose of it.
The rule against PM quoting is intended to stop people "clearing" themselves via the wording or layout of PMs from the mod instead of through playing the game (for the same reason, a lot of mods make the town win condition public information these days). While some mods might give every townie a PM in a completely different style with a slightly different win condition wording, not every mod wants to go to the effort, and they might still have some common factors no matter what the mod does.
It's not meant to stop you referring to information which is in your PM. And generally, if your only purpose in quoting is to refer to information in your PM, you can almost certainly paraphrase that information and not have to quote anyway. If you have to direct quote to get the information across, that should be a warning sign to you...
Always check with the mod of your game before you post if you're at all unsure.
It can be tricky when what the person is doing is not "quoting" the PM as such, but rather describing it, so if you are tempted to do such a thing, stop and take a step back for a moment and think about why you are doing it (this is hard as most people kind of post on the fly). Are you describing the structure of the role PM or the content? If the reason you are describing your PM is to make or further an argument that you have a "Town-looking" PM, then that's a problem.
Mods need to be aware, however, that this kind of thing - townies comparing PMs - can happen almost without deliberate intent. One person almost offhandedly makes a comment about their role PM and someone else goes "hey, me too," and suddenly you have this domino effect. Win Conditions used to be a big one, because people ought to be able to say their win conditions, and if the Mafia didn't happen to know the exact wording, they could get tripped up. I remember arguments being made about whether part of the PM (like the Role Name) was in "color" before. The Mod. needs to be alert to make sure he's not doing something (unintentionally) with the Town role PMs that he's not doing with the Mafia PMs.
Some people have gone to the extent of posting a sample complete role PM, in the rules post, which is not something I think I've done yet, but am considering doing in future games.

More seriously, it's a personality issue. Some people just don't get lynched day 1. It might have something to do with skill, but I think it probably has more to do with personality, or possibly posting frequency. When you've played with someone enough times, you start to realize that without having a good layer of groundwork first, specific people just aren't going to get lynched.
So you don't bother laying accusations early on in the first place, which is what you're noticing.

I just spent the last 2 hours reading 'Greenwood Affair'.
A lot of really interesting memories in that one, and it was probably the strongest scumteam I've ever been a part of (except for maybe the fake mason claim Loran and I were able to pull off in HP), just on the strength of who was in it (Cyan, Arim, Loran).
And then there was the whole Bat/Jester fiasco...but I digress. Great flavor in the game, criminally under-powered mafia.
As to the list, I've found it to be reasonably accurate, and in fact in the game it was posed in, only 2 of those names were lynched at all, and one of them was Bateleur making a jester play.
Not sure why I am rarely ever lynched Day 1. I get NKed. Like, a lot.

That's not untrue, I suppose. However, I took a 7 month break from mafia for the very reason that I was upset with my inability to keep up with the games I was playing (and because of a few personal issues).
And I feel I've been able to largely fix this problem since, primarily by sticking to one game at a time.
So, I do resent the point to a degree, as I have not been lynched early in any game since as well.

Fair. I've only played one game with you since you took your hiatus, and you had several (totally understandable) real life things come up that caused you to lurk in it, so I'm not really fit to judge the new you. I like my point about lurkers in general, though.

Ced395 got railroaded in VR mafia, but I think that was his first non-newb game. Since then, he hasn't.
I haven't been lynched early before either (currently residing on actually being lynched twice in 12 games, once in endgame and once day 5 after sloppy scum play).
I guess its something to do with the natural style and fairly non-confrontational posting. It would be interesting to have a look into who tends to get lynched Day 1 and if there is some sort of correlation.
There is, more assuredly, not a real link between non-confrontational posting and not getting lynched early.
Some people don't get lynched(or not early at least) because they never really put themselves forward. Yeah, sometimes they post alot, but they don't really say anything; unless someone else already said it. I would say that, sadly, 65%(or so) of the people that play this game fall into this category. Some don't get lynched because people are simply afraid to go at them. Some don't get lynched because their play is so unpredictable that you can never get a solid read on their mindset.
That just doesn't leave alot of people to pick from for lynches, and the group of possibilities always ends up being effectively the same guys. Mostly, it's just guys that can't defend themselves/express themselves well.
Of course experienced players are less likely to either get themselves lynched early as scum, or get themselves mislynched as town (in the absence of information from night abilities), that's common sense. It's certainly not true that experienced players never get lynched early. bateleur on day 1 of the original Star Trek mafia, for example. arim and cp on day 1 of Points (it took a few days to chew through them due to double lives, but effectively they were done day 1). Kung Fu (kenji, not inexperienced, lynched as SK day 1, DYH as mafia lynched day 2). And so on.
Plus of course scum will often go after the people they perceive as the easiest targets, which of course skews the results.
I just came across "Aezwolgy" reading Led Zeppelin and wanted to know what it means.

Hm? I was town in Points Mafia, and I got nightkilled. Are you thinking of andelijah?
Well more precisely, it's when a vig basically starts acting like an SK, firing without asking for claims and especially when they do that from the first night on. Vigs are usually encouraged not to fire unless the person in particular has claimed or there is talk about using a vig on him.

I'm not entirely sure why Loran isn't remembered in AezWolG, when he did the most epic one in my mind in View Askew Mafia.
Mainly because i replaced out and the town won that game....somehow. Without a Cop, Doc, or Motivator.

I'd like to try my hand at hosting a Basic. My mafia experience is all from this site, and available in my Shed-o-Matic. I have some flavor ideas, but would like some direction as to how much variation on the basic setups still constitutes a "basic".
The simple answer is "not much". Roles should be simple and predictable. There is wiggle room but too much variation from a standard 3M-9T setup, with Cop/Doc/Vig vs. RBer and you risk venturing into territory where things are overcomplicated, or the number of confirmable townies is too high, and so on. A good place to start when thinking about what roles might go in:
Roles - Town
-In Mafia, there are two basic roles - Townie and Mafioso. Townies are the 'good guys' and Mafioso are the 'bad guys'.
-Townies are of the Town faction and are made up of those trying to figure out the identities of the killers and prevent them from killing again. For the town to win, they must kill all members of the mafia.
-The Town Cop has the ability to target a player and discern whether that player is town or mafia once per night.
-The Town Doctor has the ability to target a player and prevent that player from being killed that night.
Roles - Mafia
-In Mafia, there are two basic roles - Townie and Mafioso.
-Mafioso, will win when they exceed or equal the town in number (at which point, they control the lynch). They may also post during the day and use both votes and FOSes. However, they have another tool - the ability to nightkill.
-While the game is in night, the mafia may communicate with each other. Then, one of them will send me the name of one living player to be killed.
-Once I have received the mafia’s Night Choice, as well as the choice of any other player with a night ability, I will post a morning scene detailing the public results of the previous night (i.e. who died), and Day will start.
Other Roles you should be Aware of
-The game of Mafia may have many roles aside from the ones mentioned above. The following roles are newbie-friendly roles may or may not be in this game:
-Tracker - A townie that may, every night, see if a target player performed a night action that night.
-Watcher - A townie that may, every night, see if a target player was targetted with a night action that night.
-Vigillante - A townie that has the ability to kill at night. This ability is usually restricted as being once-per-game or upon death only or other modifiers.
-Mason - Two or more townies that have the ability to talk at night
-Backup Cop/Doc - A townie which if the original doctor or cop dies, this role will take over that player's abilities of doctor or cop respectively.
-Roleblocker - A mafioso that has the ability to negate a player's abilities each night.
-Godfather - A mafioso that turns up 'town' on cop investigations.
-Survivor - A neutral whose sole goal is to survive to the end of the game. Does not count as town nor mafia.
-Serial Killer - A neutral whose sole goal is to kill everyone else. Does not count as town nor mafia.
A couple caveats: Godfathers and millers are controversial in basics because it is a large burden to place on newer players to play around false results. SKs are controversial in minis regardless of the format since they tend to be very swingy.
How long can I expect to wait to get to host a basic?
Hard to predict; it depends on the traffic of players, especially new ones. Assuming an average of one new basic starting each month, and maybe 3-4 people who signed up not showing up when their turn comes, I'd say 10-12 months is a conservative guess.

A lot of really interesting memories in that one, and it was probably the strongest scumteam I've ever been a part of (except for maybe the fake mason claim Loran and I were able to pull off in HP), just on the strength of who was in it (Cyan, Arim, Loran).
And then there was the whole Bat/Jester fiasco...but I digress. Great flavor in the game, criminally under-powered mafia.
As to the list, I've found it to be reasonably accurate, and in fact in the game it was posed in, only 2 of those names were lynched at all, and one of them was Bateleur making a jester play.
Not sure why I am rarely ever lynched Day 1. I get NKed. Like, a lot.

That's not untrue, I suppose. However, I took a 7 month break from mafia for the very reason that I was upset with my inability to keep up with the games I was playing (and because of a few personal issues).
And I feel I've been able to largely fix this problem since, primarily by sticking to one game at a time.
So, I do resent the point to a degree, as I have not been lynched early in any game since as well.

Ced395 got railroaded in VR mafia, but I think that was his first non-newb game. Since then, he hasn't.
I haven't been lynched early before either (currently residing on actually being lynched twice in 12 games, once in endgame and once day 5 after sloppy scum play).
I guess its something to do with the natural style and fairly non-confrontational posting. It would be interesting to have a look into who tends to get lynched Day 1 and if there is some sort of correlation.
Some people don't get lynched(or not early at least) because they never really put themselves forward. Yeah, sometimes they post alot, but they don't really say anything; unless someone else already said it. I would say that, sadly, 65%(or so) of the people that play this game fall into this category. Some don't get lynched because people are simply afraid to go at them. Some don't get lynched because their play is so unpredictable that you can never get a solid read on their mindset.
That just doesn't leave alot of people to pick from for lynches, and the group of possibilities always ends up being effectively the same guys. Mostly, it's just guys that can't defend themselves/express themselves well.
Plus of course scum will often go after the people they perceive as the easiest targets, which of course skews the results.

"AEzWolg" is a term applied to town vigilantes that shoot a lot of townies and are instrumental in causing the town to lose.
The term is a combination of players famed for incidents of this tactic (Archmage Eternal, Azrael and Well Of Lost Gnomes)

Well more precisely, it's when a vig basically starts acting like an SK, firing without asking for claims and especially when they do that from the first night on. Vigs are usually encouraged not to fire unless the person in particular has claimed or there is talk about using a vig on him.

The simple answer is "not much". Roles should be simple and predictable. There is wiggle room but too much variation from a standard 3M-9T setup, with Cop/Doc/Vig vs. RBer and you risk venturing into territory where things are overcomplicated, or the number of confirmable townies is too high, and so on. A good place to start when thinking about what roles might go in:
Roles - Town
-In Mafia, there are two basic roles - Townie and Mafioso. Townies are the 'good guys' and Mafioso are the 'bad guys'.
-Townies are of the Town faction and are made up of those trying to figure out the identities of the killers and prevent them from killing again. For the town to win, they must kill all members of the mafia.
-The Town Cop has the ability to target a player and discern whether that player is town or mafia once per night.
-The Town Doctor has the ability to target a player and prevent that player from being killed that night.
Roles - Mafia
-In Mafia, there are two basic roles - Townie and Mafioso.
-Mafioso, will win when they exceed or equal the town in number (at which point, they control the lynch). They may also post during the day and use both votes and FOSes. However, they have another tool - the ability to nightkill.
-While the game is in night, the mafia may communicate with each other. Then, one of them will send me the name of one living player to be killed.
-Once I have received the mafia’s Night Choice, as well as the choice of any other player with a night ability, I will post a morning scene detailing the public results of the previous night (i.e. who died), and Day will start.
Other Roles you should be Aware of
-The game of Mafia may have many roles aside from the ones mentioned above. The following roles are newbie-friendly roles may or may not be in this game:
-Tracker - A townie that may, every night, see if a target player performed a night action that night.
-Watcher - A townie that may, every night, see if a target player was targetted with a night action that night.
-Vigillante - A townie that has the ability to kill at night. This ability is usually restricted as being once-per-game or upon death only or other modifiers.
-Mason - Two or more townies that have the ability to talk at night
-Backup Cop/Doc - A townie which if the original doctor or cop dies, this role will take over that player's abilities of doctor or cop respectively.
-Roleblocker - A mafioso that has the ability to negate a player's abilities each night.
-Godfather - A mafioso that turns up 'town' on cop investigations.
-Survivor - A neutral whose sole goal is to survive to the end of the game. Does not count as town nor mafia.
-Serial Killer - A neutral whose sole goal is to kill everyone else. Does not count as town nor mafia.
Hard to predict; it depends on the traffic of players, especially new ones. Assuming an average of one new basic starting each month, and maybe 3-4 people who signed up not showing up when their turn comes, I'd say 10-12 months is a conservative guess.
