Rules(Stolen from SomeOne, stolen from someone else): 1. Bold your votes and unvotes. They should look like this: Vote loran16 . Any votes or unvotes not in bold will not be counted.
2. Do not communicate at night or day unless your role PM says otherwise.
3. Do not quote PM's or you will be modkilled. You can discuss the flavor and paraphrase it in your own words, but do not quote me.
4. Unvote before casting a new vote. Failure to unvote may result in the vote not being counted.
5. You may vote No lynch, and a majority of these votes will end the day without a death.
6. Please do not edit or delete your posts no matter how stupid a mistake you made. This will get you modkilled. This is your only warning. 9. Once you’re dead, you’re dead, so stop posting please. A single ‘bah’ post is permissible. 10. Even after you are dead, please refrain from discussing the game or your role with anyone, even other players who have also been eliminated. If you have any questions about this rule, please ask. 11. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 72-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Otherwise, you may be prodded or replaced. 12. If you have a night choice to make, it is due by the posted deadline. I will not wait for you – if you do not submit a choice to me, tough! No choice will be made. 13. Lynches will require a simple majority of votes. Once a player has reached the necessary majority, his pleas are useless and any attempts to unvote will go unheeded. 14. If you are requesting a mod prod or vote count, please bold you request so that we can see it more clearly. 15. In order to keep this game moving, everyone is expected to post at least once every two to three days and if you don't, you may be replaced or modkilled. WITHOUT WARNING, whatever your side. 18. Lastly and most importantly. Respect us and the rest of the players: I hope I do not have to modkill anyone.

I don't know if nom is town or scum. But I'd like to point out this type of behavior is his standard modus operandi.
Court Mafia: Day 1, hatch plan to KILL EVERYONE ELSE IN A SINGLE NIGHT, when the plan only allows him to hit 11 random players, ATTEMPTS TO FIRE ANYHOW (Roleblocked).
In other words....Nom is an impulsive player who doesn't think about planning long-term or listening to others. I wouldn't be surprised if he was town. At all.
There had always been lots of killing in Alpha Complex. Most of it was by the computer, but a fair bit was foolish troubleshooters killing each other and random bystanders. But never like this. After the computer's declaration of destruction, half of Alpha Complex was eliminated within days. Sure, most of the traitors were killed, but a hundred innocent infrareds and reds killed each other for each one. Soon, only a handful of traitors were left. They thought they had failed, until one of them stood up and said, “Failed? Did we ever have more than a dream of a chance to begin with? We're still alive, so let's make one last charge on the Enemy's main processor. As long as we can stand, we have a chance!”
Realizing the plot, The Computer initiated a two-week lockdown of the core, but it was too late. The traitors had already entered. With the few surviving traitors sneaking in, the computer's core had a total of thirteen inside it, and for it's own safety, The Computer had no weapons near its vital areas.
Before long, the first corpse appeared.
Infrared Citizen 56EA426, Neutral Corpse has died.
There are twelve citizens remaining. It is seven to lynch.

Reasons: He is a member of the Called. He was the first to post. He is trying to confuse the town by skipping the random stage, thus depriving us of information (no matter how frivolous). Oh, and he's a member of the Called.
Oh, and another reason to vote Silent Prophet: By refusing to participate in the random stage, he does not leave a voting record. This is actually a scum-tell, albeit a very, very weak one.
That said, I'm all for letting everyone get a random vote or three in before we settle down to business.
Avatar picture of AI has been such for some time, thus that reasoning is specious. Far more likely is that the avatar is merely indicative of a fondness for the character depicted and not a tell of any sort. Then again, I could be wrong.
By refusing to participate in the random stage, he does not leave a voting record. This is actually a scum-tell, albeit a very, very weak one.
* Silent Prophet wonders if this a random post, and he wants to know if you actually believe that not enjoying/participating in the random phase to be a scum tell?
* Silent Prophet thinks it would have been awesome if Avatar of Lag would have been the last to post.
* Silent Prophet wonders if this a random post, and he wants to know if you actually believe that not enjoying/participating in the random phase to be a scum tell?
* AsianInvasion wonders if Silent Prophet intends to post exclusively in the third person.
Also, that is not a random post, but most people will probably ignore it because it was made during the random phase.
I don't know if nom is town or scum. But I'd like to point out this type of behavior is his standard modus operandi.

An interesting pattern emergNever mind, we're still in the random phase. How long does the random phase typically last?
And I'd like to point out that if I had posted last, appropriate though as it may be, someone would have voted for me for being a lurker. And I am no lurker. Lurkers are zerg, and I prefer Protoss. Though I suppose if one wanted to be silly with Dark Archons... but that's neither here nor there.
And I will here point out to Mystic that AI did not say skipping the random phase was a scum tell. They said that leaving no voting record was a scum tell, though I admit those are essentially the same things. Still I ask why AI considers this to be a scum tell, and question why AI would draw attention to the fact that one of their own posts were made in the random phase.
If someone claims that they are an unlynchable, unkillable, octa-voter, with 4 daykills and 6 doc-protects, then technically lynching that person solely based on his claim would be gaming the mod, but I would be just fine doing that.
Until someone does something to break us out of it. This happens many different ways but usually by someone doing something scummy.
Or at the very least something odd. I think it'd be interesting to look back at all the games and see how many random phases were stopped because of something that a member of the mafia posted.

(On a not game-relevent note, this is my first votecount ever.)
With 12 alive, it is 7 to lynch.
I have a suggestion, Nom_Anor. Not to tell you how to run your game, but it would be helpful for us players if you were to include a link within the first post of the thread to each of your vote-counts and other relevant moderator posts. Emo_Pinata did this in Basic 5, and it was very helpful.

They are not the same thing at all. The key difference is motive.
A player may want to skip the random phase because he is a townie who believes that it's a waste of time and wants to get straight to scumhunting before he or another townie gets in hot water for no good reason.
A second player may want to skip the random phase because he is scum who believes that by doing so, the town has less information because neither he nor his scumbuddies would say anything stupid because of a lowered guard during the supposedly random posting that normally occurs during the eponymous stage.
A third player may want to skip the random stage for reasons unrelated to alignment, and simply wish to end the game quickly and move on with his life.
However, scum are more likely to avoid leaving a voting record when possible because they can later claim to have not been "on that mislynch wagon." Granted, applying this general information to specific games only leads to inevitable WIFOM, as it is impossible to definitively convict any particular player based solely on voting record, so we'll end this discussion on that note. Do keep your eyes open, though.
As to why I would state that my post was in the random stage, that was merely a bit of reverse psychology. By pretending that it was unimportant, I got people like you to go back and look at it. It is important, and I don't want people to ignore it a week or so down the line when we're trying to nail our first scum.
Lastly, I'm a dude, so you can refer to me as "he."
Or at the very least something odd. I think it'd be interesting to look back at all the games and see how many random phases were stopped because of something that a member of the mafia posted.
Each game is different, and as such, each game's random stage is different. It won't help the town to try to substantiate dubious scum-tells based on previous, unrelated games.
Oh, and please don't consider this post the end of the random phase. There are players who have yet to cast frivolous votes!
I have a suggestion, Nom_Anor.

ok...So you say that there are three possibilities for why a player would want to skip the random phase, 1 scum, 1 town, 1 not mattering...but it's scummy to want to skip the random phase? I can't speak for why others dislike the random phase, but to me, it feels too much like quick reply games and not enough like mafia. I'm here to play mafia, not to spam my post count up.

That was my point mostly by asking about previous games. Skander mentioned that the random phase is usually ended by someone doing something scummy, but I beg to differ in that I'd make the point that it's more often ended by someone who just decides to make a 'non-random' comment. Doesn't make 'em scummy, just...not random, heh.

It gets to be a little more difficult when the thread is dozens of pages long and the moderator makes posts that no one will care about a week later. ("Player X has sent me a PM and will be inactive for five days." "Player Y has been prodded." "Player Z sent me a batch of :cookie:s. Player Z gets a :hifive:.")
Like I said, I'm not telling him what to do, but it's a suggestion to do something that will probably help quite a few players in the long run. Seriously, there's no need for snappishness.

I'm saying that there are DI (Damn Infinite) possibilities for why a player would want to skip the random phase, three of which I have listed.
I also said that it's also scummy to want to skip the random phase if the intent is to avoid leaving a post record, which is what you were doing until recently.
The random phase is part of what makes Mafia Mafia. It introduces each player and gives a little information as to that player's posting style. In best-case scenarios, it leads to relevant conversation ("Look Ma, I'm relevant!") that players can look back upon later in the game in order to establish alignment.
Wanting to skip it is fine, but to say that it is not an important part of Mafia is an over-generalization.
Another legitimate scum-tell: You're getting very defensive over what was initially a random vote. I'm not getting a n00b-vibe from you, Prophet, so I conclude that your reaction is more likely to be that of scum trying to avoid the spotlight than of a townie trying to steer others straight.
I welcome other opinions on this matter, and continue to support any and all random votes for the time being.

Umm...if he's trying to avoid the spotlight, he's doing a crappy job of it. I could see that reasoning if he had only not participated in the random voting and then said nothing if others questioned why; but I would say that by being 'defensive', he's most definitely not trying to avoid the spotlight, that's for sure.
As far as the original premise behind the argument, well, it's hard to form a strong opinion, seeing as this is my first game of mafia, but from reading other games, the random phase of the game is, in my opinion, a very good way to jump start the conversation in the game.
SP, is there another way that you would propose that the game start out? Have everyone just introduce themselves and give out a random piece of info about themselves, such as their favourite colour? Or perhaps we could all give our opinions on the economy, or the effects of belly-button lint on the fabric of society? Maybe we can all sing Kum-bah-yah until someone goes "You're scum!".
If someone claims that they are an unlynchable, unkillable, octa-voter, with 4 daykills and 6 doc-protects, then technically lynching that person solely based on his claim would be gaming the mod, but I would be just fine doing that.
Just chiming in to say hi. I've never played one of these before but it looked quite interesting so I decided to give it a try. I think I'll hold off on my vote until I hear a little more.
AI, is there any reason you keep saying that people should continue to random vote? Don't you think we gain more from serious posts than random posts?
I wouldn't want my nitpicking to deprive others of their fun.
I believe that it is a common misconception that random posts do not provide useful content; while they are rather difficult to read in terms of behavioral analysis, "random" posts are actually quite relevant when it comes to information on and between players. Most of this, as stated, can only be properly analyzed retroactively, but they are still useful in this regard.

I agree with this but serious posts are more beneficial ordinarily - in other words I'm fine with letting the random phase play its course since there is information to be gleaned if you look hard enough but once we've moved on to the serious stage why constantly urge others to remain in the random? The serious stage provides plenty of information, more than the random stage. This is why I asked
Don't you think we gain more from serious posts than random posts?
Random posts are fine for anaylzing but serious is better.
I see no reason to formally move past the random phase until all players (Hint: Cantripmancer) have a chance to be silly. But by all means, continue to post content. We'll definitely want some of that to look back upon soon.
But for now, the rest of us can sit back, crack a cold one, and watch the walrus and the carpenter do their thing.
Quote from "The Walrus and the Carpenter" »
"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes—and ships—and sealing-wax—
Of cabbages—and kings—
And why the sea is boiling hot—
And whether pigs have wings."

I don't really see vote counts as something needing to be linked to, but I will put links to the end of each day.

OMGUS!!! I lurve spaghetti! (Spaghetti, on the other hand, capitalized, sounds like a person, not the Italian food, and I'm not sure I'm familiar with him/her, so I'm not sure if I hate him/her or not.)

And to get this in the open: I hates the lurk. FOS Gigas1, bman65, Freshman4Ever, Keeperofzion. Let's get beyond one post, shall we? (I'd FOS myself for the same thing, but that's just silly.)
In other news: AI, your longer posts with semi-serious postulations followed by "keep it random, folks" seem odd to me. I like the random fun as much as the next guy (in fact, it contributed to me getting mislynched last game), but your motives seem...mixed.
You won't see another post from me til tomorrow sometime. Lo ciento.

Sorry. Opening thoughts are that AI and SP dont really like eachother. Could be a ploy. Everything else seems kind of random. Still holding off on my vote until more has been said.
At this point, the only person I have any substantial guesses to the alignment of is Infrared Citizen 56EA426, and that's only because he/she/it was a NPC who gave his/her/its life for friend computer.
It is also at this point where I truly realize how much I miss the facial cues and verbal tics that people have in face-to-face conversations and games of Mafia.
Wine In Front Of Me and Finger Of Suspicion I know of, but I seem to be overlooking the location of the meaning of O.M.G.U.S.

I believe that acronym stands for "Oh My God You Suck".
Also while we do miss the face-to-face interaction in the online game, we also have access to an incontrovertible history of everything has been said to be analyzed, reanalyzed, and then used as evidence. This makes it much easier to come to evidence based decisions, rather than gut feelings, so I much rather prefer this system.
As for what has been said so far, I don't have any strong reactions to any of the posts so far. The only interesting thing I've seen so far is the fact that we somehow go four votes on AsianInvasion in what is supposed to be the random phase.
If it was that I would wonder why he would pick me and not AI. But I'll wait for Toastboy's answer, so as not to draw to hasty conclusions.
Toastboy is known for making posts from time to time that get more confusing the more you try to figure them out. I'm not seeing this suspicion you've supposedly been laying, but I might just be too busy looking up Lewis Carrol poems.

If you suspect that Silent Prophet and I are scumbuddies, you should come out and say it. I want all accusations and attacks on the record in case they come up again, so we know whose idea it was and whether there was any evidence as to the veracity of the claim. This way, it's crystal-clear as to who started what bandwagon, and scum won't be able to hide by saying that they had no part in the fail that was a mislynch.
In this instance, there is no real basis to the claim, since my initial attitude toward Silent Prophet has nothing to do with this game, or Mafia at all for that matter, but rather because he's a member of the Called (as stated), a MTGS Clan that has in the past been at odds with the reigning Clan of the Year, the Izzet (:link:). Everything else I've been saying about him was a natural progression based on the fact that he has actually been making some scummy plays. Not so scummy as to be obvscum, but enough to pique my interest.
Lastly, everything up to now should be random. It's not called the "random phase" for nothin'.

Hopefully we avoid lynching any other Infrared Citizens, eh?

Meh, feel free to note it, but I find it more likely that they just got off on the wrong foot and are building suspicion on each other, much to the satisfaction of the scum.

Very non-committal of you. Which is fine...for now.

Seconded. Read a Toastboy post, then reread it, then read it a third time and tell me if it's not like saying "fork" fifty times. After a bit, it starts to sound unreal. But Toastboy often hides little gems in his posts that should be paid attention to, so don't even think about dismissing him.

That's fair enough. I didn't know you guys had history and was just going off of this game.
They probably did just get off on the wrong foot like Cantripmancer said. It's probably nothing.
To be fair, he hasn't posted since people (myself, Skander, and now you) have asked him to explain that comment, so it's not certain that he's avoiding the question.
I would like to see him post again, though, and tell us why he made such an obviously unsubstantiated statement.
Now that everyone has checked it, it's time to say goodbye to the random phase. So long, old friend.
1. Random Stage is fun.
2. There's no point starting with out everyone here.
3. Tells in the random stage are useful.
2 is the only valid point. I don't get the random stage is fun bit - it doesn't bother me but if you want that sort of fun there are plenty of other ways of getting it on the forums (clans, QRG). Tells in the random stage are useful but not as useful as those in the serious stage.
What suspicion am I trying to lay?
Post #32, the one Gamerz picked out, just seems to me like you're trying to get the suspicion goin'. Not much, But scum do like to get the hits in early while evryone's messing around.
So why did you single me out as opposed to AI? Even better, when Gigas1 votes SP for the same reasoning as I "lay suspicion" on SP you say that it is a fair vote. How can Gigas1 vote be good but when I call SP out for the same thing it is suspicion mongering?

All players have confirmed, so:
It has begun.
* Silent Prophet will be skipping the random stage.
Official Deschanel Stalker of The Called
Reasons: He is a member of the Called. He was the first to post. He is trying to confuse the town by skipping the random stage, thus depriving us of information (no matter how frivolous). Oh, and he's a member of the Called.
Obv.
He is clearly trying to distract players from his true intentions with his avatar picture.
That said, I'm all for letting everyone get a random vote or three in before we settle down to business.
And thus do empires and settlements fall
Because I said so.
* Silent Prophet wonders if this a random post, and he wants to know if you actually believe that not enjoying/participating in the random phase to be a scum tell?
* Silent Prophet thinks it would have been awesome if Avatar of Lag would have been the last to post.
Official Deschanel Stalker of The Called
* AsianInvasion wonders if Silent Prophet intends to post exclusively in the third person.
Also, that is not a random post, but most people will probably ignore it because it was made during the random phase.
Trying to use faulty logic to get us to lynch Asian Invasion.
* Silent Prophet was going to stop, but it appears it is bugging you.

Avatar of Lag: 1 (Mystic 1110)
AsianInvasion: 2 (Silent Prophent, bman65)
Bman65: 1 (Gigas1)
gamerz: 1 (Skander)
Silent Prophet: 2 (AsianInvasion, Toastboy)
(On a not game-relevent note, this is my first votecount ever.)
With 12 alive, it is 7 to lynch.
And thus do empires and settlements fall
Hasn't voted yet. Obv. Lurker. And I hear he hates Spaghetti.
Random stage is also useful for anaylzing. Don't just disregard something because it was supposedly random.
Until someone does something to break us out of it. This happens many different ways but usually by someone doing something scummy.
Or at the very least something odd. I think it'd be interesting to look back at all the games and see how many random phases were stopped because of something that a member of the mafia posted.
* AsianInvasion is amused. OMGUS and correction of scummy behavior post-scrutiny noted.
Each game is different, and as such, each game's random stage is different. It won't help the town to try to substantiate dubious scum-tells based on previous, unrelated games.
Oh, and please don't consider this post the end of the random phase. There are players who have yet to cast frivolous votes!
Nothing OMGUS about it. I think you're scum, so I voted you.
Or you could take the 5 seconds it takes to find it yourself. Seriously, there's no need for laziness.
ok...So you say that there are three possibilities for why a player would want to skip the random phase, 1 scum, 1 town, 1 not mattering...but it's scummy to want to skip the random phase? I can't speak for why others dislike the random phase, but to me, it feels too much like quick reply games and not enough like mafia. I'm here to play mafia, not to spam my post count up.

That was my point mostly by asking about previous games. Skander mentioned that the random phase is usually ended by someone doing something scummy, but I beg to differ in that I'd make the point that it's more often ended by someone who just decides to make a 'non-random' comment. Doesn't make 'em scummy, just...not random, heh.
OK. Reasons please.
Maybe we can all sing Kum-bah-yah until someone goes "You're scum!".
since he has a knack of making those horribly long posts which I am too darn lazy to read.
and
holy **** your a dude!
My mind is blown
AI, is there any reason you keep saying that people should continue to random vote? Don't you think we gain more from serious posts than random posts?
KeeperofZion: Why did you push AI up to a fourth vote?
Everybody saying AI has long posts: obviously you've never been in a game with dC ;).
Unvote
Damn. And I thought I could get away with Murphy-style posting.
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
Sig'd.
This.
Random posts are fine for anaylzing but serious is better.
But for now, the rest of us can sit back, crack a cold one, and watch the walrus and the carpenter do their thing.
Why?
What suspicion am I trying to lay?
I don't really see vote counts as something needing to be linked to, but I will put links to the end of each day.
Votecount Since I'm Posting Anyway Votecount:
Avatar of Lag: 1 (Mystic 1110)
AsianInvasion: 3 (Silent Prophent, bman65, Keeper of Zion)
Bman65: 1 (Gigas1)
Cantripmancer: 1 (Gamerz)
Silent Prophet: 1 (AsianInvasion)
I'm sure it has something to do with this:
If it was that I would wonder why he would pick me and not AI. But I'll wait for Toastboy's answer, so as not to draw to hasty conclusions.
OMGUS!!! I lurve spaghetti! (Spaghetti, on the other hand, capitalized, sounds like a person, not the Italian food, and I'm not sure I'm familiar with him/her, so I'm not sure if I hate him/her or not.)
Vote Gamerz
Obv OCD is obvious scumtell.
Lo ciento.
I would soooooo OMGUS vote you right now...but...well...I'm already...voting...for...you.
Consider my vote a 'random OMGUS' vote now, as opposed to just a random one.
Sorry. Opening thoughts are that AI and SP dont really like eachother. Could be a ploy. Everything else seems kind of random. Still holding off on my vote until more has been said.
And thus do empires and settlements fall
I believe that acronym stands for "Oh My God You Suck".
Also while we do miss the face-to-face interaction in the online game, we also have access to an incontrovertible history of everything has been said to be analyzed, reanalyzed, and then used as evidence. This makes it much easier to come to evidence based decisions, rather than gut feelings, so I much rather prefer this system.
As for what has been said so far, I don't have any strong reactions to any of the posts so far. The only interesting thing I've seen so far is the fact that we somehow go four votes on AsianInvasion in what is supposed to be the random phase.
Sick read, dude.
Hopefully we avoid lynching any other Infrared Citizens, eh?
Also, OMGUS.
I'm used to it. Those silly scum think I'm so easy to hide behind. Too bad I'm just a skinny Asian. Good luck staying unseen.
(Hint: I don't usually use outside of the random phase, so enjoy the while it lasts. :toot:)
Meh, feel free to note it, but I find it more likely that they just got off on the wrong foot and are building suspicion on each other, much to the satisfaction of the scum.
Very non-committal of you. Which is fine...for now.
Never having played irl, I guess I don't know what I'm missing, but...
I like this element.
Seconded. Read a Toastboy post, then reread it, then read it a third time and tell me if it's not like saying "fork" fifty times. After a bit, it starts to sound unreal. But Toastboy often hides little gems in his posts that should be paid attention to, so don't even think about dismissing him.
Really? I hadn't seen anything that set off my scumdar. Maybe I'll go reread.
For the first time, I'm looking forward to the end of the random phase. Just to end the madness.
That's fair enough. I didn't know you guys had history and was just going off of this game.
They probably did just get off on the wrong foot like Cantripmancer said. It's probably nothing.

For not explaining this:
To be fair, he hasn't posted since people (myself, Skander, and now you) have asked him to explain that comment, so it's not certain that he's avoiding the question.
I would like to see him post again, though, and tell us why he made such an obviously unsubstantiated statement.
Now that everyone has checked it, it's time to say goodbye to the random phase. So long, old friend.
Official Deschanel Stalker of The Called
2 is the only valid point. I don't get the random stage is fun bit - it doesn't bother me but if you want that sort of fun there are plenty of other ways of getting it on the forums (clans, QRG). Tells in the random stage are useful but not as useful as those in the serious stage.
So why did you single me out as opposed to AI? Even better, when Gigas1 votes SP for the same reasoning as I "lay suspicion" on SP you say that it is a fair vote. How can Gigas1 vote be good but when I call SP out for the same thing it is suspicion mongering?
True.
unvote, vote Gamerz.
FOS is still on AI.
