Yeah, and how would that effect the singles economy in paper? You could open paper packs to load into MODO just to trade off the paper contents. I call BS on that.
Wizards don't care if you sell the cards in your pack, you already bought it so they get their money. Or maybe they could give you point codes and enough points gets you packs
Being able to load paper cards into MTGO would be the beginning of the end. At least there's a very little chance it will ever happen. Wizards would never make a stupid decision like that.
Realistically though, it would increase the viability of MODO for many players, myself included. I just can't get past paying for cardboard that I don't get to own.
However, I agree that it would probably ruin the MODO economy for newer cards, due to the massive influx of free-ish cards.

Wizards would care because their dealers would care. If the singles market tanked it'd take the profitability out of the business.
The packs actually aren't random. If the site hasn't updated it's policies yet like they plan on, you can actually look up box mapping. Apparently wizards prints all it's cards on sheets or something and with enough data you can map out boxes that you buy and will know what cards are in what packs.
LP, I'm checking your article out as well. Behind all of your swag is the brain of one of the most intelligent Magic players I've ever known. I guess that's one more thing for you to add to the wall of ego that is your Sally sig.
I can go with that. LK, you are the Mace Windu of red mages...cool, tempered logic in deliberation, but capable of just flat kicking tail when the situation warrants it.
That is correct. If you draft enough, you can actually learn the contents of each pack ~ the entire set is broken up into different configurations of 15 cards, so you can deduce what has been taken out of the pack by the person who passed it to you.
So they can definitely implement an online version of your pack ~ the question is really should they?

Basically, to do it, they'd have to adjust what they want MODO to be. Currently, it functions well as a standalone version of the paper game. However, many people are unwilling to pay the buy-in for the electronic version of the game.
Eliminating that barrier will (and probably should) piss off the people who have already bought into that game. However, it will probably dramatically increase the number of people who are on MODO, if only to try out their free cards or play some casual jank. If they feel as though this will make money in long run (either by enticing new players to spend money on MODO for things like drafts, depending on how the "packs" work out, or by increasing paper card sales) they will likely do it.

This exactly. This is why you should never buy any of the partial boxes that you will find available on ebay and the like. Box mapping is a big deal, and it has even called into question the reputability of some brick & mortar stores with regards to their loose pack sales. I personally buy nothing but sealed box products since a friend demonstrated box mapping to me.
As to the pack codes, I know nothing more than what I stated. I can tell you without question that for my nephew to have brought it up, the concept has been discussed at some level within the company. Whether that means it will ultimately happen is I think still anyone's guess.
With regards to the game economy, have no doubt that the impact of every aspect of the changes being made to MODO have been projected ad nauseum. Wizards was reluctant to create MODO in the first place for concerns over its impact on the game, but the success of the online product has proven its viability.
Yeah, whether or not you think X wizard decision is right or wrong, have no doubt that they've got a factory of second rate Hams crunching numbers trying to maximize profit which while not always optimal for the players, is usually good for the game as a whole.

Hey guys! The flu sucks balls! Don't catch it. You will puke a lot and be sad.
I've suspected for a while that packs weren't random. Every time I get a double-faced card out of a booster I always get the placeholder card that goes with it. That may be coincidence, but it was suspicious.
The flip cards coinciding with the proxy is the flips for that set are all printed on the proxy and really isn't random.
On the modo topic, I'd totally pay the 10 buck entry fee if I didn't have to buy cards there as well. I can't be buying 2 sets of chase rares just to play online and if I get packs for buying rl packs I'd maybe buy some singles I need but as it is I'd be buying paying double for magic when paper magic alone is making me broke.
I actually bought two Gatecrash packs that had the same exact commons, in the same exact order. I can't remember what they were except for Beckon Apparition and Devour Flesh, but, still.
It's a good thing I don't have a flamethower or most of western Missouri would be burning right now.

The transmission on one of the cars went out, again, so it has to be taken in, again. My wife is dropping it off at the repair shop in Liberty tomorrow morning after work, which means I have to be up super early to drive 50 miles to get her in our other car. The car won't even be looked at until Friday morning, so we'll be stuck with just one car for a while, which is going to suck.
And then a few hours later I have to drive back up to Liberty for a court hearing at 1:30 to discuss the order of protection against my ex wife. Then I get to drive back home, so my wife can use the car to get to work.
I also got the response to our motion to modify custody. It would be comical if she weren't being so serious. She claims that the custody order is not valid because my daughter was emancipated last year, which is news to me. I'm hurt that the state didn't even bother to notify me. She then says my daughter suffered "irrepairable harm" from her time living with me, which she has now claimed several times. She's a broken record, endlessly playing the same tune, and I'm tired of her song.

I think the packs are pretty well randomized within the box though. You used to be able to map them, but those days are over.
I have a box of Gatecrash on my office shelf that would disagree with that. I took out the stuff I wanted after opening enough to map it (8 packs minimum,) and I've got 20 left over that I'm saving it for drafting with some friends who don't care that they aren't getting money cards because we're just playing for fun.
I've actually mapped out boxes of most of the recent sets. It's VERY possible still. I was actually talking to my friend who works at the LGS I go to, and he didn't really believe me, so this last box, I took what was left in, and showed him the stacks, with the post it on top listing the rares in that stack. I said "Hmmm, let's see. I could use another Crypt Ghast, and maybe that Gyre Sage." Had him inspect the packs to ensure there weren't any resealing shenanigans, then had him crack them. He was sure I was going to be wrong...I wasn't.

I think the DFC check card takes the place of the FNM advertisement card in those packs.
