Don't freak out! There are more episodes. You'll be fine. ... Until tomorrow morning. Tomorrow you'll be sleepy and feel like crap, but it'll be worth it until then.
Inara's pretty hot though. Hmmm, maybe I should start writing bad Inara/Kaylee fanfic.
I'll be in my bunk.
Kaylee is pretty hot. I love her bubbly personality.
But Inara...man, I would destroy that.
Also, anybody think that Mal is basically a Han Solo type character....only waaaay cooler? I'm also starting to think that redthirst really is Mal now...

Nah, I think he's a Nathan Fillion type character.
Honestly, I think Nathan Fillion might be the world's worst actor, because he just acts like himself all the time. But it doesn't matter because he's Nathan fricking Fillion, and who'd want him to act like anyone else?!?
But, putting Firefly aside for the moment, I was reflecting on my Game Day experience, and doing some personal evaluation of the deck I ran, which got me to thinking about an article someone posted a link to recently, about how Red Decks won't have to run "bad cards" anymore. One of the cards they called out was Pyreheart Wolf...which was amazing for me yesterday. Anyone remember the others that are supposedly "bad?" What was proposed as being the Red Deck savior to replace them?

I was not kidding waaaaay back when I quipped to redthirst that I believed him to be channeling Mal...I stick by it. The character of Mal seems to me a lot more grounded and firm in his ideals. But then again, totally different approaches to space cowboys. Think about how many people each character in the original Star Wars killed...and never batted an eyelash. Whedon, on the other hand, takes death very seriously. Mal has killed and will kill...but he takes responsibility for the enormity of the act. There are no faceless stormtroopers...death matters.

Mal and Han Solo are similar characters, but the way I see it Han Solo is Red/white with some black (he DID shoot first), and Mal is red/white with a little splash of black. Sure he's a smuggler and does 'unsavory' jobs but he's got a code of morals he never compromises which is pretty white.

Well, it does matter but only for so long to drive the plot and develop characters. Then the reavers show up and then mangled body parts and blood spattered rooms became all too normal(There was so many promises of death and rape and killing...I wanted it to happen).
On an entirely different note, I still dislike what happened with the Firefly movie. I mean, I liked that there was a movie but, the Reavers turned out to be a cliche origin story after all and River Tam fought like, once more in true Whedon fashion, a slightly overly skilled Taekwondo fighter. It was ridiculous. You would expect with her back story there would be military combatives training with some eye gouges, knees, elbows, and palms to compliment the muscle destruction techniques from Filipino Kali and limb breaking...and yet, all we got were spin kicks and cliche martial arts movements you probably see done throughout the run of Angel or Buffy the Vampire slayer(which is dumb...because 8711 the premiere martial arts choreography group in Hollywood which have had a hand in everything in the last decade from the Bourne Identity to The Dark Knight Rises choreographed the scene with the Reavers and the bar). I was so disappointed. The cherry on the top was Wash died. I mean, god, way to just sink everything I liked about this franchise.
But, at least, Kaylee made it(I've been a fan of Jewel Belair Staite since Space Cases). She, Wash, and the false promise that was River Tam were the only real reasons I tuned in.

Well, from my experience on Friday night, here's what performed the best for me: Stonewright, Pyreheart Wolf, Hellrider, Gore-House Chainwalker, and Flames of the Firebrand. All of these cards are still good, if not great.
It's just like Z said - once one season is over and a new one starts, people tend to forget what was good and what worked. People saw Boros Reckoner and BTE and believed them to be the end-all, be-all. Granted, the last 2 GP's have proven how wonderful those two cards are, but they never rendered our Red staples obsolete.
Fortunately, if some of us Red Mages have forgotten the real staples of our decks and eschewed them for some new, shiny toys, then certainly everybody else has too. We can definitely use that to our advantage.
...Oh. Sorry about that. I made an ass out of u and me then assuming everyone has seen Serenity. Well, at least, you'll go in and not have your heart ripped out by the tragedy. It isn't a nice scene.

I hear that. Pyreheart wolf is always an alternate win condition for me. Always. I have yet to have a moment when it has let me down.

Sioux,
If you have any respect for this clan and its members, edit this post and put all this under a spoiler tag with a WARNING to all who are still watching the series. It's generally considered bad form to post the outcome of any movie, book or series openly, and in this case it will likely bring down a bit of bad blood if your post stands as-is when the majority of people check in for the day. I don't expect that you intended to, but you just read the last chapter of the book to folks who are still at the beginning. Please clean it up. Thanks for your consideration!

I just started watching Firefly last night. It took almost all of my willpower to tear myself away after watching the 4th episode so I could go to bed. Show is awesome!
I hear that. Pyreheart wolf is always an alternate win condition for me. Always. I have yet to have a moment when it has let me down.
Pyreheart is a champ, man! I mean, the formula for last season still works: lots of solid creatures + Pyreheart Wolf + Hellrider = get there. The only GTC card I put in was 3 Boros Reckoners and I haven't been disappointed with him either. Also, people aren't playing Pillar of Flame as often as they were a few weeks ago, so Pyreheart (and Hound of Griselbrand) can stick around longer too.

Firstly, I must apologize. I was not thinking correctly upon making the post.
In my life, normally I don't mind spoilers and most of the friends I make spoil matters of entertainment all the time. There have been few moments of pure surprise in my entertainment viewing due to this and because of it I forget that it is a notion people still hold sacred sometimes. Once more, I apologize and have spoiler'd up my post.

I have four Reckoners in mine and I have yet to have a moment where the minotaur has under performed. I am running three Pillar of Flame due to a couple friends being all about Zombies every week so, it's been a blessing. My crowd is usually casual being this far from a city where actual FNM or anything beyond level play happens so, my Red sligh is usually wrecking everyone's face unless we play a five players free for all(which is the normal thing in which case I switch to my Volatile Rig burn deck).

EDIT: Hey Sioux--another quick bit of help if you would...some folks will stroll up and open the spoiler without thinking about why the heck it might be there. If you could put a line above it saying "Don't open if you're still not done watching Firefly" or somesuch it will give people the appropriate slap to the forehead.
And while we're at it, my apologies to you for sounding so severe. All the craziness around here (Kansas City) due to getting ready to be slammed with another blizzard has made me cranky. I need to relax...
So, when are you going to edit your response to Sioux? The spoiler is still showing on that one. I managed to "la-la-la-not-reading" it, but it was close...
Oh man... then you definitely don't want to read this.

redthirst is redthirst, fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse. He was the leader of the Fires of Salvation, the only clan I'm aware of to get modded off the forums so hard they made their own forums.
Degenerate? Sure. Loudmouth? You bet. Law abiding? No ****ing way.
I am still sorry. Garghdfgldfkjgl;dkfgkdl...garghle.
On a more card related topic, even in an unofficial tournament at my local LGS is it wrong for me to be using Vexing Devil?
To back up this question, my play group and the meta involved in this part of the country is between 20 - 30-ish people. I'm the only one who has even been off the reservation let alone been to an FNM. The folks around here do not understand the importance of low costed creatures, control tactics like O-Rings & Detention Spheres, don't take into account matters such as creatures with inherent benefits like a Thragtusk(three of them own multiple copies and have not once used them) and have no sense of competitive deck making in other words sticking to one or two colors and barely playing them properly.
The LGS we actually helped get going barely understands the game and hosts these unofficial tournaments where the winner gets a free booster every week(due to the extremely low turn out numbers and size of the store, we doubt it'll ever get DCI recognized or FNM recognition anyways).
So, again, is it wrong for me to be using crappy creatures like a Vexing Devil given I know better thanks to the teachings of the clan? Or due to the backwater nature of the situation, should I just go wild and continue with this Volatile Rig/Vexing Devil/Bonfire of the Damned/Rolling Temblor concoction I call a deck I bring to this tournament every week(It wins against these guys...really)?

So you're playing Vexing Devil... ironically? Like, you're aware it sucks, but you're playing it anyway so your deck is more insulting to lose against?
I think you've taken condescension to a whole new level...

But...but...it wins and...and I get a free booster out of it.
Hell, we did a five player free for all for one of the tournaments and I still beat everyone. I'm not even trying to win and it wins. I even threw in five extra cards to slow it down and it wrecked everyone this last get together at a friend's house.

Well, you can always be the catalyst that forces the meta to evolve. I've learned that a group of players will only be as good as they have to be to achieve equilibrium. If you play down to their level, they'll never have to play up to yours and your meta will always suck.
+EDIT+ Btw, I don't want you to think that I'm against the idea of you playing VD ironically - that's probably its best and only real use. I'm just really impressed by how condescending you're being to those other players.

I have been thinking of taking a couple of the better ones off to the side and just showing them what competitive play looks like and how to get better. One of them literally has pulled most of the current standard staples from his boxes he bought of M13, Ravnica, and Gatecrash but, he doesn't know how to use them properly(and yes, most of this group buys boxes at a time per paycheck...there really isn't much to do in South Dakota, so when a hobby hits it hits big).
I've been thinking of doing that one of these nights even when a tournament happens. Just roll out the How-To-Play fold outs and run them through the ringer again like we did last year when most of the group started but, this time, with progression of a meta in mind.

Seriously, that is some next-level ****.
Well, I try...no, I really just did this to see what would happen. I didn't mean to slaughter them all consistently. I'm hoping someone in the group figures me out and puts some anti-artifact and Thalia's or Blind Obedience's or counterspells in their decks or something. I don't want to win again this Thursday.
If you want a meta that you can test against without having to resort to MODO or similar, then that's probably what you'll have to do. Show them propper card evaluation, deck building, play lines, etc., but also introduce them to resources like this forum so they can research their own interests at their own speed. Give them the tools to help themselves.
Give a man a fire, you keep him warm for a day,
But set a man on fire, and you keep him warm for the rest of his life.

Give a man a fire, you keep him warm for a day,
But set a man on fire, and you keep him warm for the rest of his life.
Sorry to hear that because it was some seriously impressive advanced level trolling.

I know my way around photoshop and am planning on making a new Fires of Salvation signature...and I'm stealing this quote for it.
Stop that...you're making me want to continue destroying these guys.
...dammit, alright, maybe I don't want them to stop me but, this will be the test they have to pass when they get better.
