All you need is a 3 Warstorm Surges and a Gisela in play, and Vexing Devil is a one shot kill!
Why aren't we abusing this broken combo, dudes?
If the opponent choses damage than it is 2 Warstorm Surge + Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. If the opponent choses to let it resolve, then the combo does 16 damage and resolves a 4/3 beater.
Of course this is huge mana and a waste of time but ... redthirst has it covered.
But some idiot somewhere is going to read that, build the deck, win one game out of 100 with it, and come on here to start a thread entitled "Vexing Devil: Broken or Just Amazing?"

redthirst is redthirst, fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse. He was the leader of the Fires of Salvation, the only clan I'm aware of to get modded off the forums so hard they made their own forums.
Degenerate? Sure. Loudmouth? You bet. Law abiding? No ****ing way.

What worries me is that WotC is going to somewhere in the next couple of sets put something out that does make VD playable. Then our pretty fireplace is going to be littered with all sorts of "I told you so" trash and gospel of the VD riffraff. I can see some of the R&D guys doing this so they can sit back and laugh as we all try to wade through such garbage.:banghead:
On the "Vexing Devil is unplayable in any format" nonsense, I should mention that a deck just went 4-0 in a MODO Legacy Daily Event running 4 of them as part of a Burn deck:

Vexing devil is actually pretty good in legacy, from what I've heard (I don't play burn.) That being said, he is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad in standard. Also, my LGS is running a modern event soon. should I play burn, restoration angel/eternal command Bant, or a deck that makes my opponents hate their lives (eggs)?
I'm a proud member of the Online Campaign for Real English. If you believe in capital letters, correct spelling, and good sentence structure, then copy this into your signature.
If that's your "casual," what on earth is required for "formal," a butler in livery shuffling the decks whilst a pianist plays Brahms in front of a tapestry?
Just to let everyone know: my daughter is safe. Her mother was apprehended attempting to cross into Mexico with the girls. Border patrol caught them. I'm now on my way back up from Texas. It's been a harrowing couple of days.
Thank you for the good thoughts sent my way.

He is, at best, fringe playable in legacy burn. That's not to say you can't win with him, but there may be better options. When you start talking about the cards that are not necessarily auto-includes in all builds (Flame Rift, Hellspark Elemental, Grim Lavamancer), devil seems to pale rather significantly. Moreover, he just turns on too much of their removal for me to be happy with him, while not offering a major advantage when he sticks like lavamancer or figure of destiny.
I'm actually not really that positive on it as a card (I recently decided to remove it from my legacy burn list), but compared to redthirst and Z, I seem downright ecstatic about vexing devil.

The number of Aggro red decks that do well in all formats without VD completely dwarfs the number of decks that do well with it - including Burn - the only deck it's even somewhat decent in.
It's certainly better in Modern and Legacy than it is in Standard, though...

Honestly, your custom title really should reference your opinion of vexing devil.
It's not everyday that a card is referenced to an STD.

And I thought the same thing when I first saw Dash Hopes (which, I believe, you mentioned earlier).
Yes, I did mention it earlier. It's actually the easiest example to explain the problem with "opponent choice" cards.
"When do you want to use Dash Hopes?"
"When I need to counter a spell."
"Then it will never work as a counterspell."
"Then I'll just cast it on something that isn't worth countering!"

Of course, that probably because I hate foils and think they look tacky in a deck.
You and me. Same page.
I hate using foils. Unless the whole deck is foil. Then maybe it will look good. But I don't have the time/patience/money to foil an entire deck, so I don't know.

I've got a buddy who's BYOS is a completely foiled out Tooth and Nail deck - even to someone who doesn't like foils it looks pretty baller, but it's not something I would devote any amount of time or money to.

It's so apt... I even refer to the card as VD.
—Jaya Ballard, task mage
I mean, it essentially has two modes:
R - Sorcery - 4 to the dome.
R - Creature - 4/3 beater.
Both of those look great as cards. I mean, who wouldn't want to play a 4/3 beater for 1? And the other option is a better Lava Spike.
It's just so easy to look at that and think "Well, then this has to be a great card, because both options look great!"
Pristaxcontrombmodruu!
Wow! Counter a spell or they lose 5 life! I'll play it in Suicide Black and it'll be win-win!
Turns out - card was trash 90% of the time.

I'm normally not like this, but when RTR came out, foils just seemed to fall from the sky. After I got my playset of FNM pillars, it became a mission.
Those Hellriders would have been a lot easier and cheaper to get foil a month ago...
