Do you always recommend playing 3 colors? Is two color or single color a viable strategy?
Secondly, what about the Kamigawa flip cards? Those probably wouldn't be viable as general choices, would they?
Finally, it looks like according to the rules I am reading, as of 9-10-09, the legend rule DOES apply. Is that a change that is pretty important to maintain, or do most people play without it?
a) You can do just fine with a mono-color EDH deck. You can also do just as well with a 5-color EDH deck with Progenitus as your general, as long as you have a plan to get him into play. The example I gave is just for a 3-color deck, which is middle-of-the-road. In fact, in our area, the most common color combination is 2 colors, because there's just more and solider 2-color legend choices than for the other color possibilities.
b) I honestly don't know. I think they would be a problem because they're not legends as you play them, only after you activate them. The exception would be the cycle from Saviors that start out at legendary creature, then flip to legendary enchantment. best to check on this with a local EDH authority, though.
c) Again, having only recently starting myself, I'm going by the local gaming scene. I've only played one game where it mattered. It seems counterintuitive, so I would go with the official rules and say don't bring duplicate generals to a big brawl.
Sorry if it seems I'm being evasive, but I'm still a noob.
I'm also pretty hung over from cold meds and no sleep last night. I've a ton of work to do today and just now woke up to find that my internet was out. Well, now it's working again (obv) but that's almost worse, because I tend to waste a lot of time online before actually waking up enough to get stuff done.
Hey guys.. Daidream and I are so excited! We're leaving for the 1st ever Geek Media Expo, a convention that's about more than just anime--it's about everything else, really. We wanted to cosplay as Jedi, but money caught up with us. We'll probably go to the Middle Tennessee Anime Convention next year as Jedi. She even got a slick purple wig:
Today I've gotta pack up and get ready.. we can't wait!

As for me, I woke up at 10:30pm today. 0_0;
My sleep schedule is so messed up, it's silly. It seems like I can't get anything done during the day, and then everything is closed at night. Sigh.
This weekend I'm going back to Yonago yet again, this time to climb a mountain. Mt. Daisen is a prominent feature of the local landscape, and bunch of other JETs and ALTs are going to climb it on Saturday morning. After the climb we'll be hitting up an onsen (hot spring), followed by a birthday party later in the evening. It should be a fun day.
The colors of your deck depend on the color of your general. You can't use colors that aren't your general's. Most legends are either one, two, or three colors.

No, you've been very helpful, thanks! I'm thinking, in my group, due to the glut of cards that were purchased during RAV block, we'll be seeing a lot of dual color decks and generals. Although I am tempted to run Isamaru, Hound of Konda as a general just to be stupid.
B) Erayo, Soratami Ascendant is one of the most used, but also most annoying, generals. You can use them if the initial creature (the one with the mana cost) is legendary.
Ha, I had considered Erayo.
C) Yes, legend rule applies. It's pretty important since Vesuvan Shapeshifter becomes a general removal in blue.
Eww, that sounds icky to me, I was pretty annoyed by Soggy Pickles-esque stunts right before I quit playing.
I play EDH often on MWS, so feel free to ask me if you have some doubts
Thanks! I don't even know if I have MWS installed any more, but if I am ever on and itching to play, I'll look you up.

Okay, if you wanna pick the "best" generals, there are really only two choices and they are:
Arcanis the Omnipotent
Isamaru, Hound of Konda
Arcanis is such a beating if he hits and sticks, Ancestral Recalling for free sounds good to me, and his ability to avoid the removal that plagues most generals sounds fun.
Isamaru is the fastest and "safest" general, considering most EDH decks don't start really moving till 6 or 7 mana, you can be pretty sure you're getting 8-10 general damage out of him, and WW has access to some really cool cards to make sure you get the other ten.

Hahaha. Oh. I see. Only two, huh? This is why I hate Magic. But thanks for showing me how Isamaru could be good in a non-ironic sense, that is pretty awesome, provided he doesn't continually eat it and end up costing 6W to play.

Well they are strictly the best, there are bunch of other "cool" generals that people run that are good, Zur, Teneb, Rhada, Teferi, and the like are all worthy generals.

Brothers Yamazaki. Now THAT is an awesome general, if you are the sort of person who likes Camel and Mountain Goat and making goofy decks that could never win.
Also, I'm no pro player, but nothing is "strictly the best". The term is meaningless.
@ Alacar: Kaysa seems like a cool option. I'm tempted by Xira Arien. She was my first legend and my first gold card, got her when I was 13. I thought she must have been amazing, because she looked cool and she was LEGENDARY (the card even said so!) and had THREE COLORS. I was always so proud to have her, until I learned more about the game. I always wanted to play her, and never once did. I still have her in a sleeve somewhere. I ought to drag her out and give her a go.
Unless you're specifically going for the druid angle, Kaysa seems like an inferior general choice compared to Tolsimir Wolfblood. Braids, Conjurer Adept seems to be a rather hilarious choice for me. Pack your deck with nothing but lands, card drawing/filetering/tutoring, and ridiculously huge permanents to play.

The Golden Rule of forums: If you're going to be rude, be right. If you might be wrong, be polite.
I'm currently using Experiment Kraj. I had a deck before that had Uril the Miststalker, but I don't have all the cards I need for it and someone else has since made a similar EDH based off him. Last one I'm still working on is Gwendlyn di Corci.
Well guys.. I'm going to bed early tonight, and I'll be gone all weekend. Have fun and take care of yourselves. I'll be posting pics from GMX as soon as I can.
Hey Guys! I went to Launch Parties at my local store yesterday, I've got a second place (8 Participants).
I got 2nd as well, with a similiar deck ;)...:).
Here's my (very short) reportish...thingy.
I ended up getting second last night in the ZEN draft. I got really unlucky game three of the finals where I had to mull to five and was land screwed.
1. The deck isn't as great as I had hoped, because I originally was going to go :symr::symg: but then I remembered I hated green in limited and cut it :p.
2. Yes, that's a Soaring Seacliff in the land base, and yes it actually won me a couple of games.
Since we're reporting on stuff, I managed to find some people to play Planechase EDH against last night. I put together 2 decks, both of which were probably not great- my card pool is pretty crappy by Legacy and Vintage standards. I have a lot of old crappy cards from the Fallen Empires/Legends era, a smattering of Urza's Block cards, a crapload of 6th-10th edition junk, nothing particularly exciting, and then box after box of random stuff from Mirrodin through Planar Chaos. I decided to build two decks, one with Teysa, Orzhov Scion, and the other with Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician. Played 3 games, 2 with Teysa, 1 with Ib.
Teysa was... eh. Maybe it is just that it has been a while since I have played, but it just didn't seem to get going, and I kept getting mana flooded. The planar effects were probably the only thing that kept my interest in the entire game. I didn't win with her, and I didn't like it, especially after eating it in Krosa when I was 3 damage away from a victory on my next turn.
Then I played Ib, and lost with him, but the game was perhaps the most fun game of Magic I had ever played. Granted, if I had been a bit more focused on playing aggressively instead of giving all my goblin tokens names and making Ib say vulgar things to my opponent, I probably would have done better. Also, letting myself get hit in the face for 9 damage from my own Lightning Storm, and then following it up with a Chain of Plasma targeting an opponent with 9 cards in his hand and nothing to lose probably didn't win me any Player of the Year awards, but the ensuing chaos gave me so much infantile enjoyment it didn't matter. So I think I'll stick with Ib, drum up some multiplayer nonsense cards like the ones listed above, and just go for a quirky goblin deck that can win, but can also just be used to make mischief in 4 player brawls. Any suggestions?
Also, a question- let's say I have Furnace of Rath in play (oooh, sorry, I mean, "on the BATTLEFIELD"), Akki Lavarunner is flipped, and we're in the Stronghold Furnace plane, and I Shock someone. How much damage do I actually do? When do I double, when do I double the double (if I double the double at all), and when do I add 1 to the damage? Does the 1 get doubled? Or is it added afterward? And would it be bad sportsmanship to exploit this sort of rules confusion to distract a player so I can cheat?

You are the active player, so you get to choose the order in which the akki ability, plane triggered ability, and the Furnace triggered ability stack.
It's not cheating if you apply the triggers in the optimal order to max your damage when you have priority to do so.
I think playing with you would be hilarious fun. EDH players are generally (pun intended) a more laid-back crowd with better social instincts than the average type 2 gunner. And playing with mostly Fallen Empires cards gives you a lot of ironman street cred in the "Hey Look I can have Fun with Crappy Cards Too" department.
It takes a fair bit of maturity and a decent collection to put together a highlander deck. It takes balls to the wall and a bit of insanity to enjoy fielding a mono-red EDH led by Norin the Wary.

Awesome Psi and congrats your deck looks fairly intrigueing. I usually would go to a tournament on friday nights but friday was one of those nights where I had to do something else. Perhaps, I'll go to a standard event next weekend to try out a new deck I have been testing on mws just to make up for missing the prerelease event.
I will probably play the deck above next weekend assuming if I can borrow like 90 percent of the deck from some friends. I have a limited card pool when it comes to standard.
Anyway, time for me to get back to Calculus 3 and engineering phsyics. See you all later.

I don't have a lot of my Fallen Empires anymore, though, which makes me really sad. You know, say what you will about it, but I loved that set as a kid. Especially all the thallids. I was ALL about them, even though I think I only marginally understood how they worked at age 12. God, what I wouldn't give to go back to a time when Thorn Thallid was awesome.
Having fun with crappy cards is the heart of the game, if you ask me. It's fine to play with good cards- good cards are good, after all, hence the term "good cards", but there is something very satisfying about dropping a completely mediocre piece of binder chaff to the table and doing fun things with it, you know? Beating someone down with a Darksteel Colossus you Tinkered into play? That's effective, and can be pretty cool, but beating someone down with a Combat Medic equipped with a Loxodon Warhammer and Tatsumasa the Dragon's Fang is something of beauty.
Haha, I actually spent some time trying to figure out how one could effectively use Norin as a general. I failed, obviously, but I would love to see someone do it.
Last night, I played 4 player Planechase EDH, and it was really a lot of fun. Josh and M played with us, too, and it seems like everyone liked it. Josh ran Lyzolda, I ran Ib again, M ran Experiment Kraj, and the fourth player was our 16 year old sister who has played all of two games of Magic in her entire life- once when she was at a laundromat with us and was bored, and once when she found a copy of Autocthon Wurm and was like "Can I make a deck with this? It looks fun!" She ran Tolsimir Wolfsblood, and she actually ended up coming in first at the end of the night. It was crazy.
The planar aspect really seemed to break up the tension and add a lot of swing. The first round of the game, we started in Skybreen, and ended up getting two chaos effects in a row, making everyone but the first two players take 14 damage (the first two players, having made land drops, ate only 12 damage). We then spent the next two rounds frantically attempting to shift away. It seems like getting into planes like Sokenzan and Undercity Reaches really makes the game move very quickly and makes people much more aggressive, even with slower decks, which was a lot of fun. We ended the game in Goldmeadow, which everyone loved. Endless chump blocking and lots of reasons for people to make stupid jokes and bleat like sheep is a good thing! All in all, a lot of fun!

I'm tired of having people steal my General and beat me down with it. Taking general damage from your own guy is just ......
So I've started playing Brooding Saurian instead of another fatty they can steal. So what happens? Someone Threatened it away and smacked me for 4 then sacced it to Predator Dragon. :/
I agree the goats are delicious.

Here's the deck I drafted:
1 Plated Geopede
2 Tuktuk Grunts
1 Bladetusk Boar
1 Molten Ravager
1 Torch Slinger
2 Skatterskull Giant
2 Goblin Shortcutter
2 Goblin Bushwacker
1 Adventuring Gear

1 Explorer's Scope
1 Zektar Shrine Expedition
1 Magma Rift
1 Inferno Trap
1 Mark of Mutiny
1 Punishing Fire

16 Mountain
1 Soaring Seacliff
1. The deck isn't as great as I had hoped, because I originally was going to go :symr::symg: but then I remembered I hated green in limited and cut it :p.
2. Yes, that's a Soaring Seacliff in the land base, and yes it actually won me a couple of games.
I ended up getting a playset of the release promo Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle, 1 Marsh Flats, 1 Scalding Tarn, 1 Scute Mob, 4 jankish rares, and another Iona playmat, which I gave to my brother :). So all in all a pretty good night :).
Not too bad I think :).
