Official Character Sheet Shredder of DAMNIT
DAMNIT: I should never have to shred my own character sheet in frustration.
I liked the Children of Hurin. Turin Turambar is one of my favorite characters in Tolkien's mythos. The Silmarillion is one of my favorite stories, although one that's not particularly easy to read.
That's the understatement of the year. My dad had to stop reading it, he couldn't finish it. In his words, it's "Like the Bible of Tolkien mythology." And that's pretty true. Turin Turambar is a great character, though my favorite story has to be Beren and Luthien's.
I'm back from my day of snowboarding with my dad, he skiis. We had a great time and I had my most epic wipeout ever. During my third for fourth run, I can't remember, I hit a patch of ice, going rather fast, and flipped over 2 and a half times, the head to toe way. When I finally stopped I was like 5 feet from this massive pine tree. The best part is, some kid was near by filming people for a project of his and caught this epic crash on tape. Hopefully it will be on YouTube soon.
I don't have an opinion either way on those fantasy books. I don't read them. Not because I don't like them, I just prefer to read weirder books myself. My dad is a big fantasy guy though...
I remember trying to read the Silmarillion when I was a kid... didn't work so well. Like your dad, Alacar, I had to stop reading it.. I'm hoping that The Children of Hurin won't be nearly as bad...
This week I will be covering probably my most favorite deck in legacy to play and that is UW control. Ever since UW control started to become competitive in legacy I quickly grasp a liking to the deck ever since Legacy of 2005. The deck certainly has went through many changes over the years.
First off I will start off with my old UW control list that was a viable deck back then.
One of my very first versions of the deck when I first started playing Legacy. I remember this deck had some difficult against Threshgro decks back then and as well as Solidarity. Although it did have a fairly decent game against goblins like good control decks should have.
Just recently I decided to become interested in the deck again. One of my friends who is a Legacy Moderator on the source of legacy actually played this version to a 5th place finish out of 47 players at one of the most recent legacy tournaments. This tournament happened on 1-10-09. He was about only 3 spots away from winning the Mox Emerald as well which was pretty impressive I thought.
As you can tell the above list is actually similiar to my old list long ago. Of course there is some obvious strong card choices like Relic of progenitus, Back to basics, and especially engineered explosives to shore up the aggro-control UG(x) based decks in the Legacy format.
Here is my matchup analysis for the deck.
Team America: This matchup is in favor of UW control. Back to basics is actually used as a win condition in this matchup but you have to time it right and its usually over for them. Shackles, swords to plowshares, engineered explosives, and wrath of god also pretty much annilates TA's aggro strategies.
UGr Threshold: This matchup is also in favor of the UW control player. You usually have several outs to counterbalance and once again if you land a back to basics in a timely fashion against the threshold player it can potentially be lights out for them. But if that doesn't work you have engineered explosives, swords to plowshares, wrath of gods, and even vedalken shackles can end this matchup as well. Against a more tempo version of Ugr threshold(threshold w/ 4 wasteland, 4 stifles not counterbalance) would be even easier to win against and you can just apply the same tools just don't let your life get too low in this matchup. Since burn can definitely get in the way of winning.
UGw Threshold: This matchup is essentially the same for you and it can be potentially easier since they don't run red blasts in the board. Mull drifters and back to basics are some of your MVPs in this match too. Postboard obviously get better with Dismantling blow which removing counterbalance can be a bright thing for you.
Ad Nauseam Tendrils: This matchup is actually a difficult matchup for you but with a better sideboard this matchup can actually give you a slight edge postboard. Spell snares, counterspell, arcane laboratory can help this matchup. Also adding a playset of runed halos in the board can also help as well.
Goblins: You actually can be extremely ahead in this matchup if you resolve a shackles as soon as possible. Shackles can single handly end this matchup both pre-board and postboard. Wrath of god and swords to plowshares also helps so you won't get owned in the combat step. Postboard actually gets much brighter for you since Blue elemental blasts can wreck goblins efficiently. Of course, it would be wise to stop aether vial and goblin lackey at all costs it's your top priority when playing this matchup.
Landstill: This obviously highly depends on the build of landstill. But generally with spell snare(standstill), back to basics and also counterspell you should be able to run with Landstill. Postboard should be about the same but I think boarding in more blue cards to fetch to Force of will can be a good strategy. Shackles will obviously be good in this matchup as well taking their manlands can help extremely and Fact or fiction is also very good in this matchup.
Aggro Loam: I'd say the more nonbasic lands the loam player have the better since a well-timed back to basics can nail the Loam player as well. Shackles also can be pretty good in this matchup. Postboard gets better for you since you can shut off their recurring graveyard engine with Relic/Tormod's crypt.
Well I think that's all the matchups that are worth noting.
Last but not least here is my UW landstill that have been working on as of late and from what my friend(the one that played UW control) said it's actually a deck that would do pretty well in legacy but what else is new.
Welcome to Sulendil! Your username reminds me that I really should get back to reading "The Children of Hurin" by J.R.R. Tolkien
Haha, you're the first one to realise that my nickname comes from Tolkien's work. Now, wanna guess the meaning of that name? No prize for those who guess it right, and Ashnod's Coupon don't count.
Speaking of Children of Hurin, I did read the Silmarillion version of that story, and that story is quite sad but epic for me. Is Children a good read? And is there any juicy extra inside it? (ie maps, chronology, etc)
And Silmarillion is a hard read? I have finished the whole book myself, despite English being my second language (My mother tongue is Chinese), so is that earn me a right to brag?
Cecile: Nice post! But I don't think I will touch Vintage for a while, if not ever. I'm still struggling to play well in T2 and Extended, and trying to build a deck from 9000+ cards looks daunting for me. That's a problem when you start out late in game.

Welcome to the coffeehouse we have a pretty nice group here and it's always good to be here no matter what day it is.
Thanks! but it isn't vintage its actually legacy. But yeah Type 2 and Extended are good formats for people that just coming back into the game of magic and want to play magic competitively.
Haha, I've only started it, and started it last night after a marathon session of Persona 3.. so yeah i don't think my concentration was at its highest.... as for guessing what your name means.. No clue, and i don't think I'm going to try since i know piteously little of Tolkien's work.
I have a cup of coffee waiting on the coffeepot, so if you'll excuse me.... After that, I'm going to figure out my plan of action for the day.
Cecile: Yeah, Vintage is not Legacy, but both are Eternal. And thanks for the advice, too!
Speaking of Extended, I recently try to use Lighting Bolt deck by the infamous Finkel (hei, don't look at me like that: I'm not a good deck maker, so naturally I use a lot of other people's ideas for my decks). Turned out to be more powerful than I think. I mean, it's fun to see your opponent burned to 0, and he couldn't pulled out his magic combo. It's not the best, but it's certainly good.
On a side note, I have upgraded my computer with the new 1GB RAM. Now run more smoother than before.
Omna15: Well, even I forget what it really means now, since it's a name I invented using Tolkien's Elvish language long time ago. And coffee!!! I love coffee. I guess I inherited the love of the drink from my mom, who also drink coffee everyday.
Cecile: Yeah, Vintage is not Legacy, but both are Eternal. And thanks for the advice, too!

That's cool I think its much more important to be a good player first before being a good deck builder. Especially if your thinking about going into a competitive scene like Extended or Standard. Besides when you learn how to play decks well enough you'll learn how to build those decks good enough too. Also the new lightning bolt would be called Shard Volley which is almost the same as the classic lightning bolt. But Imagine a burn deck such as Red deck wins would be a strong choice again for extended especially since they neutered counterbalance decks by banning sensei's divining top.
Cecile: Yeah, Red remains strong in Extended, but I think a lot more are using Zoo. Speaking of Zoo, I rarely wins using that deck. Maybe I haven't make sense of that deck's philosophy, or it's just me being sucks. Oh well, at least I'm getting used to other decks, such as Affinity. Artifact decks are awesome, in fact it's the report of Finkel's winning in 2000 World Championship and his Tinker deck in a Chinese gaming magazine is what draw me to Magic in the first place.
Omna15: OK, a regular coffee will do the trick for me.
So my winter break is coming to a close shortly, and seeing as I head back to Boston on Sunday I thought it would be nice to maybe reflect on the past month I've had at home. I've realized how important home is to me, and that my family and my girlfriend mean the world to me and that is why I miss home so much sometimes. But with that in mind I've come to realize that aside from the people that I love, my hometown has nothing left to give me anymore and that I absolutely dread being here. Every day is the same monotonous routine, and although similar routines pop up when I'm at school, at least these routines contain things that I enjoy, such as my classes.
One other thing I've realized is how much of a family we are here and how important the CoffeeHouse is to me. Over the past 2 years everyone that I've come into contact with and developed a relationship with, I just want to thank you.
So is anyone taking a peek at the spoiler? Nicol Bolas is ridiculous. I wouldn't have a problem with him except for his first ability. +3 AND you can destroy almost any permanent, including other planeswalkers? That's just wrong.
So is anyone taking a peek at the spoiler? Nicol Bolas is ridiculous. I wouldn't have a problem with him except for his first ability. +3 AND you can destroy almost any permanent, including other planeswalkers? That's just wrong.
Thanks for the hug!
And honestly, if a deck comes out where he can get powered out on turn 4 or so, I expect to see the banhammer. It wouldn't be the first time that cards were banned in Standard for being simply too powerful. I think that the biggest issue for me with Nicol Bolas is that Planeswalkers are not considered creatures and therefore become very tough to remove, especially when your lands are getting peaced every single turn. The only way I call him truly fair, is if a card is printed that looks something like this:
Planeswalker Kill! 2
Sorcery
Planeswalker Kill! is all colors.
Destroy target planeswaker. It can't be regerated.
Yeah, Nicol Bolas is really powerful, if not broken. But then, it's that Elder Dragon we're talking about, I am actually very happy to see that he's dominating the field like a real dragon even being nerfed down to brandywalker. It please my inner Timmy.
See, WoTC? That's why I voted for a 'destroy planewalker' card in the Latests Development.
I'll echo Alacar here when he said that we love you too, Evan, and that honestly you can't know how much this place has meant to me through the years... maybe I haven't been around sometimes, but always whenever I come back from a long hiatus, I still always feel like I can express myself...
In a sense, the CoffeeHouse is like a relationship, if you think about it.. all that has happened in the coffeehouse goes in fluctuates and sometimes there's bad times, but as long as we all talk it out and sometimes some people come and go, it still has been who it is, and we love him/her/it for it! Okay that sounded really cheesey, and I know Photon would have a snarky comment, but I don't care
The CoffeeHouse is almost 3 years old...this April 19, 2009 will be three years the CoffeeHouse has been in existence. Can ya believe it!?
I mean, he is 8 mana, and three colors, but Jhoira of the Ghitu just found another awesome card to use. And she just happens to be my new favorite Magic card (ever).
On 3 years... wow, really? Doesn't feel that long. That's awesome
I didn't even think of that combo honestly. I was more in the lines of powering him out with a Seething Song and just using multi-colored lands. Realistically, with the right opening hand he can come out on turn 3 which would essentially end the game for your opponent.
And Alacar, I can't believe it's been three years as well, even though it's only been 2 and a quarter for me it still seems like an awfully long time.
@Danica: I completely agree with you and, yes, it was corny.
As for going back to school that's a good thing. I also wish you luck to bump up your GPA average as well. I am sure you can do it.
Oh yeah alacar can you add my UW control legacy of the week to the coffeehouse column? It would appreciated.
On another note, I think its time for me to make a legacy deck with Nicol Bolas in it taking control of tombstalkers and Tarmogoyfs is actually quite good.
By the way speaking of burn for extended here is my burn deck for the format that you can guys can try out if you ever are bored.
Vexing shusher is the main because well I think Extended has alot of blue based decks in it like various blue control decks and also those Faerie decks so I figure Vexing shusher would be better in the main then in the sideboard. Even though I don't really have a sideboard as of yet. Also it would be cool to name a deck I created after the coffeehouse which I consider as my home on the internet.
Anyway I have to take off for now I have some stuff I need to do before work so see you all soon. Only a 4 hour shift tonight not that bad. Take care and have a good day everyone.
Yep, it's extended season...time to actually build a deck now that some of our favorite cards rotated out since last we met. *casts a long, rueful look at Deeds before unsleeving and storing them*
In other news, I haven't failed the ultrasound exam remediation. I squeaked by with a conditional pass. So here I am, still a student. I've sort of become a mentor to the other international students because most of them come from non-English language backgrounds. They look up to (of all people) my English skills. I haven't the heart to tell them I have significant word finding and language issues of my own from the accident. We're attending a study session together where we read aloud from various scientific papers, and discuss the new findings. I'm hoping that helps because many of the students have been told they won't be allowed to pass if their spoken English doesn't improve.
So is anyone taking a peek at the spoiler? Nicol Bolas is ridiculous. I wouldn't have a problem with him except for his first ability. +3 AND you can destroy almost any permanent, including other planeswalkers? That's just wrong.
Haha. Yeah. Nicol Bolas is ridiculous, and I think a lot of users in the Rumour Mill are under-valuing him and his ability to make it into five colour control. I personally believe he'll make it into the deck.
Hell, he could powered out turn six or seven, if you drop a mind stone or two.
What really is funny is, if you're playing casual with proxies, you can drop him turn 0. Swamp into Dark Ritual (BBB), Black Lotus for triple red (RRR) into Seething Song (RRRRR) and a Mox Sapphire (U). God hand, yes, but hey, stranger things have happened Lol.
I'll echo Alacar here when he said that we love you too, Evan, and that honestly you can't know how much this place has meant to me through the years... maybe I haven't been around sometimes, but always whenever I come back from a long hiatus, I still always feel like I can express myself...

Mm I'll echo this sentiment as well. This place does feel a bit like a family, despite my lengthy absence from the 'House. Since deciding to come back, I feel very welcome like old times and that's not the norm when it comes to most internet communities. This place is very, very special.
@ Cecila -- Nice looking legacy decks there. I'll have my Windows machine back Thursday if you're looking for a game or two ^_^.
Anyway, how has everyone else been? School started back up this week, much to my dismay. Wednesday's are proving to be my "bad day" as I'm in class from Noon until seven at night. What makes it worse, though, is I have to change campuses as well. My Astronomy class + lab is at one campus, and my Public Speaking class is thirty minutes away >_>.
It wouldn't be too bad if Lab didn't theoretically end at 1550 and my next class begin at 1630, but he never keeps us that late. I suppose I can't complain too much, Lol.

Off I go to spend the night over at Brad's, cuz he's droppign me at a hearing aid appointment in the morning, so I've got to get clothes together and whatnot.. hope everyone is doing good... talk to you guys soon!
Hey Coffeehouse. Sorry, I was gone all day running errands and spending time with Michelle. Friday is our first day of school so we're running around with our heads chopped off or something.
Cecilia: I'll add it shortly
I consider many of the Coffehouse members here close friends, or at least as close as internet friends can get
And even as I'm hating on Nicol Bolas, I want to snag 4 of them, naturally I am collecting planeswalkers.
Speaking of which, I should build a Jhoira of the Ghitu deck with Walkers.. maybe 4 color RUwg with splashed walkers and other goodies.
So, I just found out that my new job will be paying me 25,000 a year! Woohoo! That's how much I made at my first job with iWrite Marketing!
Well I need to call about my hearing aid and then maybe play some Persona 3 or read or something

See, WoTC? That's why I voted for a 'destroy planewalker' card in the Latests Development.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

On 3 years... wow, really? Doesn't feel that long. That's awesome

4 Wooded Foothills
2 Fire-Lit Thicket
2 Karplusan Forest
4 Stomping Ground
3 Bloodstained Mire
5 Mountain
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Mogg Fanatic
2 Hell's Thunder
4 Vexing Shusher
4 Magma Jet
4 Lava Spike
4 Flame Javelin
4 Incinerate
4 Rift Bolt
2 Tarfire
Vexing shusher is the main because well I think Extended has alot of blue based decks in it like various blue control decks and also those Faerie decks so I figure Vexing shusher would be better in the main then in the sideboard. Even though I don't really have a sideboard as of yet. Also it would be cool to name a deck I created after the coffeehouse which I consider as my home on the internet.
Anyway I have to take off for now I have some stuff I need to do before work so see you all soon. Only a 4 hour shift tonight not that bad. Take care and have a good day everyone.
Love,
Cecilia
In other news, I haven't failed the ultrasound exam remediation. I squeaked by with a conditional pass. So here I am, still a student. I've sort of become a mentor to the other international students because most of them come from non-English language backgrounds. They look up to (of all people) my English skills. I haven't the heart to tell them I have significant word finding and language issues of my own from the accident. We're attending a study session together where we read aloud from various scientific papers, and discuss the new findings. I'm hoping that helps because many of the students have been told they won't be allowed to pass if their spoken English doesn't improve.
Haha.

EDIT: Also, glad you passed Starr! Yayyyy!!
Off I go to spend the night over at Brad's, cuz he's droppign me at a hearing aid appointment in the morning, so I've got to get clothes together and whatnot.. hope everyone is doing good... talk to you guys soon!
