So, I'm having a bad day. Actually, bad day is an understatement, but if I said what sort of day I was really having, I would have to get infracted for language.
Anyway, a little back story here- I don't use credit cards. Never have. However, recently, Josh and I discussed getting an emergency card in order to have a safety net in case something should ever come up unexpectedly, like it did this winter with the car. Also, we figured it would be good to just build up some more credit.
So, I apply for like, the most basic, low limit card last week, and find out I'm denied. I'm really puzzled, because while I don't have great credit, I don't have bad credit, either. Even though it is sometimes tough, my bills are always paid, and I'm pretty financially responsible for the most part. I'm even more perplexed when the denial letter cites that I'm denied due to a history of credit card abuse and a history of delinquent credit payments.
So, I apply for another card, and I'm denied for that, too, for the same reasons. So I check out the link to the credit agency in my denial letter, starting looking around my credit file, and find out that, for some reason or another, I have a huge debt out of nowhere, and apparently have a mortgage loan taken out in my name in December 2005.
Well, this is all news to me. If I had been paying a mortgage on a house, why would I be paying out the ass for my tiny apartment each month? Furthermore, the bank that issued the loan isn't even in state.
So yeah, after some poking around, I basically confirm my fears that my identity has been stolen. I immediately freak out, for obvious reasons, but also because it makes me afraid that this might someday make it impossible for me to own a home or interfere with our eventual adoption plans- and its not as if we don't have ENOUGH obstacles as far as the latter is concerned.
So now, I'm having to contact my various banks from over the past few years and having to compile all this information to try and prove that the offenses weren't mine, while all the while feeling completely exposed and violated. I seriously feel like I've been raped, and it's really REALLY not a good feeling.

Wow.. just.. wow. That's crazy.. I really hope you can get this settled, man.. damn.. *hugs*
Luckily these days at least there are steps you can make to correct the situation. Even 10 years ago this sort of problem would've been impossible to resolve.
My dad had his PayPal account hacked like twice. Luckily for him, he is very set in a routine of checking his bank account every morning and noticed it right away. He told me he called the Paypal people up, (who are based in California, I believe) where it was 4:30 AM and got down to business. To the best of my knowledge, everything got straightened out and got all the money back. It didn't seem like that big of a deal, since he has deal with it before, but it adds the extra hassle to the pile of all the other stuff you're dealing with.
I sincerely hope you can get this fixed, Photon. That definitely is terrible, and while you feel like crap at the moment, its good that you found out something was wrong.
Yeah, it might take awhile, but I'm told it shouldn't be too hard to prove that I'm not responsible for the loan. It's still really aggravating and has left me pretty paranoid, though.
Meanwhile, this is a bit of bright news in the midst of an otherwise crappy day.

When I read the article on Yahoo News I nearly wet myself. Sure I don't live in California and have a 16 year old girlfriend, it's such a major step foward for gay rights and finally vindication for something that a lot of us here have been fighting for for ages.
I'm sorry to hear about your identity theft P_E. That kind of **** is what makes me always use cash.

It doesn't even matter if you only use cash. I've used cash pretty much exclusively for years. According to what I've found, it was during that time in my life in which the offenses occurred, so it really can happen to anyone at any time. You don't have to make use of plastic and make a lot of electronic transactions to be vulnerable. In fact, it wasn't until 2006 before I ever used my debit card for anything other than an ATM card, and it seems like they managed to get me prior to winter 2005.

That sucks, and I hope you can clear your name soon. I'm paranoid too, but I guess it can happen to anyone, no matter where you are, or what you do.
I know. It's scary. and you know what really makes me angry? Apparently, my credit was good enough to get them approved for a loan for a home, and now it's shot to crap. That means I could have had a loan for a home for Josh and I, but now I can't. I suppose, though, the thing I'll be taking away is to pay attention to my credit. If I had been paying attention to it prior to this, I would have noticed before any real damage could have been done, but I never really thought it was that important to me yet. Well, now I'm creeping towards 30 and finding out how important it will be when it comes to acquiring the things I want and need in life, and not only am I ill-prepared, but apparently ridden with proverbial parasites.

Congratulations man! Where is North Central University?
It's in downtown Minneapolis. A small christian college, only 1200 students or so. I guess I'll be visiting home every few weekends as its only 45 minutes from here.
Well its about 1pm over here, so im gonna go get ready before i head out to another it company in search for a job.... ugh i hate this... they other place i went to hasnt contacted me yet... i kinda doubt they will, the HR there sucks and its pretty likely they didnt even really check my resume beyond the application and personal data.... anyone has any advice? how does the job searching actually work? do i just show up and keep passing my resumes over and over again? or should i like contact them ahead or something? this is what happens when you have never worked before and suddenly realize you need a job

"As the size of an explosion increases, the number of social situations it is incapable of solving approaches zero." -- Varsuvius, Order of the Stick
I'm sorry to hear that Photon. I had a semi-similar thing happen to me, but at a much lower threat level. A class I had dropped in College apparently wasn't recorded as dropped. But, since we thought it was handled, we never paid for it. I was called in once, told them I had dropped it, they confirmed I dropped it. Later, I had a collection agency sending threatening letters to me about this class. I was freaked. We couldn't get the college to handle it, so we just had to pay for it. I was sorta pissed they wouldn't recognize that I had dropped the class. I also get an F on my transcript because of this. And it's not the first time, either.
I saw the California Supreme Court results on CNN yesterday. I was grinning and went to tell a few people I know that would enjoy the news. I can see that California will be very popular for the next few months.
Sepiriel: I'm doing job hunting too. I tried going to one place at a time, in hopes they'd call back, but apparently it doesn't work like that. So my advice is just to send your resume -everywhere-, write applications in the building and pass it on, etc. Show you're interested. Dress nice. Call them and ask if it's been looked over yet. Ask, when you turn in the application, when you can get an interview. All that kinda stuff.
So, I'm currently in love with the computer game Supreme Commander. Even though the game eventually comes down to the basic formula every time, it's still kinda fun to watch things get built and see how well you can balance your in-game economy.
Photon: wow, that bites. My parents got into a bit of a sticky situation recently about possible identity theft, but the bank called us right away and whoever stole their credit card number was only able to get a few things. a dollar at the Apple Store, a dollar on napster, a few other small things...and a TV, which is the only reason all 3 of us kids are still living here (we have 3 tv's in the house and a spare, so no one would buy another one) still, we were notified quickly and once a police report was filed they got the money back.
My advice: Call the bank that issued the loan and try to find out specifics on the loan. since it's a mortgage loan, find out where the house is and how much has been paid. if nothings been paid in 2 and a half years, it's likely been foreclosed. Also, try talking to your local police once you have all the information you can get, see if they can give you some advice (my parents called about it and a state trooper came out to discuss what their options were)
I hope whatever it is gets cleared up quickly.

Thats awesome man. I'm heading off to Emerson College in Boston this fall. I had no idea that anyone else, aside from the rare occasions where SB wanders in, here was in the same boat as I come the end of August. How excited are you about it?
Sorry to hear about that, Photon. Does your good credit name return once everything gets sorted out?
I guess I'm sort of in the same boat as you, ep., except four years later. I'm starting grad school at Northwestern University (not Northwestern College) this fall. It seems that SB is coming to Carleton as I'm leaving, so, uh, you guys still have a Northfield, Minnesota contact.

Hay guys! I actually went to an FNM tonight, invited by a friend! I played my "Green Deck", and here's my report:
Round 1: Vs. U/B Faeries.
Totally and completely lost 0-2. The deck was so unoriginal it made me get a headache.
Round 2: Vs. Monored Elementals
Won 2-0. The player was the girlfriend of a more hardcore newbie (he started with Lorwyn) and she liked the Elemental deck. Too bad she made such bad choices to not use Flamekin Harbinger's ability.
Round 3: Vs. R/G Aggro.
Won 2-0. The guy had a slow start and was overwhelmed by my Quirion Dryads with Oversouls.
Round 4: Vs. R/G Aggro.
Lost 0-2. This time the gal had a more hardcore beats deck, and I got manascrewed and outraced.
Round 5: Vs. Monoblue Faeries.
Lost 0-2. I have no idea why, but I had a slow start game 1 and he drew into every single counterspell in his deck in game 2.
My friend entered with WUG Blink Control and got 4th. Good times.

Seems like faeries could outrace a pure aggro deck simply because faeries can switch roles in games. Its a Hybrid aggro-control deck while your deck seems to be just aggro Alacar. Bitterblossum brings a whole new avenue because now it has a good late game against control decks.
Other then that though I enjoyed reading your report and I also like the deck.
SO.... i started applying for online jobs... i figured since i dont sleep much anyways might as well try and become a internetz mexican right?
I have two applications for translation jobs... i am being told those pay anywhere between $6-10/hour some maybe more... so lets hope i can get a job within the week... maybe then i can start offering you all pixel fajitas

U/B Faeries is the most frustrating deck in the current standard I think. It just cheap shots you down to 0 while countering almost everything you play. It takes no skill to play Fae, just 5 land and more than 3 cards in hand, anything past that the opponent will be too paranoid about the counter/kill to drop anything of value. It's a major payne.
Don't I know it.. I had nearly everything for Faeries except the Bitterblossoms not too long ago.. if I had invested in that I'd be ruling the FNM circuit around here.. but I'd like to think I'm better than that.
