What I think this commentary comes down to is the same old conservative thing of not liking free speech. They want everyone to espouse Christian views like them and for no one to ever talk about liberal notions or "sinful" things like homosexuality. It stems from that sort of communitarian perfectionism which, I think, is sort of symptomatic of the control freak who feels compelled to dictate what people in society should do.
I think that's pretty much it. Though not only that, but I think the group that Kern belongs to (the wealthy white Christians in America) have held so much power in the nation for so long that they're disturbed by the growing trend for other worldviews to be seen as equal. For decades they were the loudest voice, but with cosmopolitanism becoming more and more a mainstay of western society, other voices are getting stronger. They don't hold the same influence as the old guard, but that they have any sway at all can't be something those used to holding all the cards must enjoy. I think people like Kern feel threatened by the growing influence of the Other, so they react like this.
When you start a speech with "I'm not gay-bashing, but ...", you know you're in trouble. Seriously. Although I think it's cute that Kern manages to sneak in some subtle religious smacktalk at the beginning there. If her opinion wasn't representative of a dishearteningly large number of her constituents, it'd be a lot funnier.
I've never met any gays or liberals bent on forcing people to accept homosexuality. Most just want gays to have equal rights. Sally Kerns acts as if they're trying to have Vogue replace the national anthem.
The rich white christians in the US are always the ones who never want to change their beliefs yet expect everyone else to. I'm sure Jefferson Davis was a pious man but that didn't stop him from owning slaves and maybe Andrew Jackson sat in the front pew every Sunday but he had the blood of Native Americans on his hands. Sometimes I wonder how America could have produced so many narrow-minded people when the founding fathers were fairly open-minded and actually interested in granting people as much personal liberty as possible.
Kern is denying that she has a gay son. Though she was quick to say that she'd love her son just the same even if he were to choose such a lifestyle she feels is a cancer on society.
"It's okay if you're gay, son. I still love you like I love cancer."
I've never met any gays or liberals bent on forcing people to accept homosexuality.
Which is what gets me about the whole 'gay agenda' thing. First of all, what agenda? I didn't realize that the queers were like the Cylons, what with there being many copies and having a plan and all. We're not remotely that unified. If there were any overreaching desire in the gay community, it's simply to not be treated like ****. Go figure.
Secondly, our detractors seem to think that gays are out to force everyone to accept us. Total acceptance is nothing more than an ideal to begin with, and one that can't be forced on anyone. The best anyone can manage is to increase awareness and dialogue in the hopes that mutual understanding may breed tolerance. I, for one, don't expect anyone to accept homosexuality. But I do believe they ought to tolerate it and leave people well enough alone. They worry so much about gays forcing our icky tolerance message on the poor, poor children when they're just as guilty (more, in fact) of forcing their message on others. The hypocrisy astounds.
Sally Kerns acts as if they're trying to have Vogue replace the national anthem.
I have to say, it'd probably make sporting events much more interesting if Vogue was the national anthem...Especially the 'manly' sports, like football.

Better than replacing Homoseaxual or Gay with Jew in her rant, replace it with Women's Rights. This exact opinion is presented whenever a Minority group starts to gain a level of equality in society.
She is welcome to her opinion, but the fact she is just repeating the same drivel with no actual fact as to why it is true is proof it is not a real opinion but just ignorance.
If someone came forth with some sort of legit study showing how the "Homosexual Agenda" is having a Negative effect on the world morso that Homophobic hatred does, I would at least give some merit to that person as a spokesperson on the given subject.
Howdy, everybody. I know I don't post here often, but I do check in from time to time and see what's going on. Just not a big clan guy, I guess.
Anyway, I have a question for everyone. I have a report I have to give in my psychology class that deals with a "statement of truth" and whether that statement can be proven or disproved. The "statement of truth" someone suggested to ma that I liked was, "Homosexuals are born gay. It is not a choice," or the converse of that. It's more to find which of the two statements would be supposedly correct.
For the record, I don't have a belief as to which is correct. I have not studied this, nor have I discussed this with anyone, so I hold no opinion on this.
My question is this; do you think you were born gay, or is it a choice? I saw a bit of information similar to this a page or two back, but it was a different question.
A short answer (for a tally) would be good, and feel free to extrapolate. I find this kind of interesting. Thank you all in advance. -Jack
I think I was born bisexual. One of my earliest memories is having a crush on Riker...and Troi too. We were talking about this the other day at the shop. One of the ladies asked me when I knew I was bisexual and she though it was a choice. I said
"Yes. One day I decided that I wanted to fondle boobs but still have the option to get reamed by a ****.".
Thats why I love Sakura I can get both from the same person. Well...maybe one day Sakura will have boobs.
I'm not sure how much nature and how much nurture is involved, but the one thing I'm sure of is that sexuality isn't a choice. Simply from my own life I can say with certainty that it wasn't a choice. Though I'm no scholar when it comes to the biology and genetics of sexuality, so there's not much further I can say than that.
I'd say that's a pretty good choice of topic; there's a lot of substance to work with. I, and anyone who I've ever spoken to on this subject, believe that sexuality (not just homosexuality, but all sexuality) is not a choice. Frankly I find the notion patently absurd and laughably irrational. To echo Mikey a bit, it's true that the actual cause has yet to be conclusively determined (and it's likely to be more complicated than, say, identifying a 'gay gene') but one thing that has been pretty conclusively proven is that correlatives with sexual preference are evident long before puberty. That would certainly indicate that sexual preference is not chosen, since it is determined long before a person has a concept of what that choice even is.
The interesting thing about this excercise it that it doesn't have to do with arguing/proving your statement, but the psychology behind belief. I would assume the point is to examine something we believe as true and why, despite the possibility of our being wrong, in order to understand the mechanism of belief.

The Golden Rule of forums: If you're going to be rude, be right. If you might be wrong, be polite.
They have found some scientific proof that Sexual inclination is pre-birth most of the time. Some people just enjoy sex enough that anyone can get them off, and thus technically can choose based on whoever they are most comfortable spending time with. Some "Bi" people just learn they can get sex from either gender. Kind of like the example of "Jail-Bi". People whom are straight, but after some time in jail find they do not mind having sex with the same gender even if ultimately they are not actually attracted to members of the same sex.
I also believe some people get drawn into certain sexual identities based on certain things in their childhood. A boy who was abused by his father sexually may have issues determining what kind of relationship he should be having with men and as a result may find himself living a Bi or Gay lifestyle, even if in reality deep down he has no actual Sexual atraction to men and he is just acting out on psychological issues.
Alot of straight boys go through the "circle-jerk" phase as well, which really has nothing to do with being attacted to other boys. If you needed to be attracted sexually to someone to have enjoyable sex with someone, people would not masterbate.
That said, having sex with the same sex when you are not actually attracted to them is a way to avoid intimacy.
I'd say that's a pretty good choice of topic; there's a lot of substance to work with. I, and anyone who I've ever spoken to on this subject, believe that sexuality (not just homosexuality, but all sexuality) is not a choice... one thing that has been pretty conclusively proven is that correlatives with sexual preference are evident long before puberty. I certainly agree that this is true; although I wonder what part environment and genetics play on the balance. For example, I never chose (nor would I have chosen) to be turned on by bondage and S&M. But obviously this aspect of my sexuality had to have been formed purely by environmental factors, since DNA doesn't know anything about ball gags and nipple clamps.
At least I hope it doesn't...

While it is unlikely we have some biological disposition to ball-Gags, we can easilly have a biological dipsosition to Dominance a Submission. I think S&M helps us play off of some more animalistic aspects of sex, or helps us deal with our own power or helplessness issues in some aspect of our real life. Or a combination. For alot of people S&M is not even sexual.
For me, bondage and related ideas are about trusting someone so much that you can let them do demeaning or dangerous things knowing they don't think less of you and that they really have no intention of real harm. Me being primarilly dominant, knowing that someone trusts me so much to know that no matter what we do that I love and respect them. For my partner, to know that no matter what happens there is still so much love at the heart.
Pretty symbolic. If the world can keep tossing suffering at you but you know that through suffering there is still love, it is rather empowering.
Hmm... choice vs. birth. My answer is as follows...
"Are you born gay?"
"Yes but....."
"Is it a choice?"
"No...however..."
I think it is something you have to take on a case by case basis. Most times you will find that it's something you are born with. However there are a few that have chosen to take on homosexual behavior due to either past trauma or subconscious social rebellion. Now perhaps these few "I choose to be gay/ I'm gay because stuff happened" subjects were already predisposed to homosexuality at birth and just had a latent sexual awakening . I can't tell you that because I really have no idea.
So in short, you are born gay but if it comes down to some kind of psychological study you should take everyone on a case by case basis and go from there. Never lump anyone into the same category because everyone is different and might have a different reason or predisposition for certain behavioral traits.
Oh...and hey everybody I missed you *Big Sam Hugs*

Sally Kerns acts as if they're trying to have Vogue replace the national anthem.
Sounds like that could be fun. Striking poses would be more entertaining than putting your hand over your heart.
But the best suggestion for replacing the anthem has to be "Born in the USA" because so many people think it's a really patriotic song (and I've seen the song used at July 4th fireworks, or just the chorus incorporated into a nationalistic medley schlock), when it's actually highly critical of the US gov't and such.
My question is this; do you think you were born gay, or is it a choice? I saw a bit of information similar to this a page or two back, but it was a different question.
A short answer (for a tally) would be good, and feel free to extrapolate. I find this kind of interesting. Thank you all in advance. -Jack
Well, first off I would have to point out that it's a false dichotomy. I don't think it's a choice, it certainly wasn't for me, but that doesn't mean that we can say that everyone is born gay. Environmental factors (mostly before puberty, I would guess) could certainly play a role, and evidence suggests that they do play a role, since twin studies and the such have not found a high enough correlation for us to say that genetics and pre-natal factors can account for all the variation.
I think that genetics and pre-natal factors (for example, hormonal differences in the mother's womb) probably account for the majority tho.
So to make it a bit cleaner I would probably want to phrase your question as: is homosexuality a choice, or not a choice?
I would definitely say that it is not a choice. I've only met one gay person who ever said that it was a choice, and he was a big time (Catholic, I think) Christian, and he admitted that it would be really hard to change, and he doesn't personally seem to be trying to change anyway...
Ok, I also met an "ex-gay" who was a fundie Christian. So I guess that makes it two gay guys who've said that... (He is so not an ex-gay... no straight guy has ever told me that it would be a bad idea to visit my room because it's better to avoid temptation).
There are certain interesting differences in the neurophysiology of gay men and straight men (I don't know how great the differences are in lesbians, though I imagine they are similar); to what extent these differences are innate is questionable, since the brain does change throughout one's lifetime, but the differences are there, and cast significant doubt on the "choice" hypothesis. There are a number of other physical differences between homosexuals and heterosexuals, for instance, a lesbian's forefinger and ring finger are more likely to be of equal length than the forefinger and ring finger of a heterosexual woman.
