I'm just setting here listening to Nick Drake, sipping some coffee, and getting ready for the day. The contractors are busy in the kitchen again!
@Mr Stuff - You're vacation sounds wonderfull. It seems like *just the breath of fresh air you needed, and I'm glad you had the experience. I remember when I was on a boat in the straight of gibraltar, and it was just the most amazing feeling. At one point, I could look from side to side and see both europe and africa. Congrats on your 2000th post as well.
Thanks for the AOTW. I see we still disagree on Blood+, because I think the slowness is what gives it the breath and magic it needs, but to each his own. I'm not sure if TOKKO is up my alley, but thanks for the review all the same. I would watch it if it came on tv, but I don't think I would go and buy it either.
good morning to you too shaharazad. Have a great day and see you later tonight.
@Mr. stuff: i find all of your aotw pretty good and im way behind on my legacy of the weeks lol im going to try to write one up this saturday about solidarity though. Probably going to do something different this time around.
I am sure hunter, snoop, alacar, and others will be looking forward to my next legacy of the week.
By the way hopefully ill be able to play round 3 in the standard tournament later tonight ill probably will have some more time to play tonight then i did last night and looks like im on the 20th table out of 39 tables in the type 2 standard championships which is decent for me playing MGA considering im way more of a control player then a aggro player lol. However I am going to do my best to win round 3 and the other upcoming rounds.
Hi everyone, stopping by to say hi. My arm hurts from doing serves. I called my family back home and everything seems to be okay now.
Anyway, hope you guys are enjoying yourselves. I'm going to enjoy the next few weeks because of so many fun activities ITRL and soon... ah... college life.
Love you all!
@Anime of the Week: Nice! Can't wait to see it in the Philippines. Mr. Stuff is really the otaking.
LOL I dreamed I was going to London with my mom, and we only had a coupe days so I said to her "wanna go see Scotland for half a day or Wales for a few hours?" Not very exciting.
@Tanth - that's a crappy way to interview people. HR needs to remember that it represents the company to its applicants, and will scare away qualified people if it uses overly negative interview tactics or otherwise represents the company as an abusive environment. It goes both ways, we have to put on a suit and lose weight and look sharp and do our homework, they should at least behave professionally as well.
@Craig - Whoa, talk about lack of tact. Even if she need the money, I'm sure she's better off away from those lunatics.
So yesterday I finally got my own MODO account up and running. I've been avoiding doing that for a while, because in my opinion playing online, for all its perks, can never compare to actually going to a store and interacting with people. But people around here never draft anymore, and right now I'm so rusty in limited it isn't even funny. So it will be good for that. If I win my Regionals and get to attend nationals, I gotta have been practicing all formats, right?
For those of you who are also there and wanna buddy me up, my username is ricklongo.
Whee! I won 2-1 in round 3 of the Standard Tournament. So far I'm undefeated in matches, and 6-2 in wins. I guess this deck isn't as crappy as I thought. It just needed a kickass sideboard.
edit: Woo! I also have a job interview! It's at Wal-Mart. Wish me luck people. I need a job--these bills (and that box of Future Sight) won't pay for themselves (well the box might, if I crack a foil Pact of Negation)

Good luck Ala, if not at Walmart, then somewhere much nicer to its employees.
Thanks Snoop.. I know Wal-Mart has a pretty bad rep, and I avoid it at all possible, but it's a job, and it's a job I'm not against getting; I need moneys, yeah? Something like $170/month.
Luckily, I've got help paying them bills for the next few months, but it would be nice to be a little more financially secure for the summer.
First off, congrats on RotW, Cecilia! Plus, given that I have avatars turned off, it's always nice to see yours blinking away.
Yes, Kevin. Congratulations!
I can't find my recipe. I did find my one for ginger balls instead, though (get your mind out of the gutter, you vile people). They'll have to wait until Thursday night, given that I'm away today, but they're deliciously gingery.
Awww, that's okay.
I think everyone loves Mamelon's cookies, if you know what I mean.
Hmmm. Lets leave that ambiguous.
That's really interesting. I'd like to think I judge people on their personality, regardless of their physical gender, but then I tend to adapt quite strongly to whoever I'm spending time with anyway, so it's a lot easier to go by personality than by anything else. Still, I could see how a lot of people would be thrown by that sort of personality - so many people (especially people in their 40s or older) be confused by something as simple as an assertive woman in the workplace, or a man who does the housework.
As men and women are by the majority judged by different standards, what people will see as a personality that is decent and pleasant or obnoxious and chafing will often be distorted by that double standard. Many people will be annoyed with an assertive, competitive, or raucous woman and claim that it has nothing to do with her being female or being gender atypical, and yet would not be irritated by a man of the same temperament or demeanor. Likewise, males that are soft-spoken, emotional, "dainty," or otherwise appear feminine are often more likely to be judged as weak, dependent, cowardly, or childish than a female who bears the same behaviors. Some studies even suggest that most young boys who are shy or sensitive tend to be met with less acceptance by their parents.
Bear in mind that I'm not remarking on your own comment about judging people by their personality. People can judge others fairly and neutrally and not operate on double standards. Some do, at least. But on a cultural scale, the double standards rear their heads more often than not and seem to be more pervasive.
It also makes me wonder if that's why more boys are diagnosed as severely autistic (the special school my mother works at always has a much higher number of boys with autistic spectrum disorders) - they start from a handicapped position, so to speak, as males often seem to lack that certain amount of empathy or emotional insight that women tend to have. (I like to think of myself as fairly emotionally insightful, but apparently I'm just "soft" :)).
Yeah, that's a definite pattern. Autism spectrum disorders show up much more often in boys than in girls. There is a belief that autism spectrum disorders have more in common with the typically masculine thinking patterns and brain. Some scientists even describe autism as an extreme form of male mental characteristics. But I think it's worth noting that girls with autism do not, on average, identify as male. As you point out, definitions of masculine nature tend to entail less delicate emotional receptiveness, bluntness of expression and even aggressiveness, weaker inclination towards being verbally communicative, a cerebral and rational rather than intuitive nature, and an affinity for systems, such as mechanics and numbers. This is very variable, as many males do not demonstrate all of these traits or in the same degrees. However, they tend to go along with the "master model" of what is masculine, and as these qualities are also common among those with autism and Asperer's syndrome, there's at least a clear perceptual link.
As Starr points it, many women with such characteristics tend to be seen as exceptionally weird, whereas a man of such nature may be evaluated much more kindly as simply being an eccentric intellect, if that.
Something interesting - I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. I do appear to have certain characteristics in common with that syndrome, but I ultimately disagree with the diagnosis because those traits do not interact the same way the earmarks of autism do, and they can be explained in other ways. Those with Asperger's syndrome can be described as having difficulty with social interaction, being very blunt and systematically minded, having and difficulty picking up on emotional cues. I can often behave naïvely or be socially awkward, though I think it's in a different manner. I am certainly not hampered in my abilities to read emotions or social cues - in fact, I tend to be hypersensitive. However, I am known to disrupt or ignore social strictures and boundaries sometimes, usually because - like all in my family - I am very passionate, and I frequently contend with aspects of my culture.
It's theoretical, but I have come to attribute much of my outsider-like quality to being so atypical in terms of what is normal, the least of which is not my gender identity. Growing up I seemed to "ignore" gender in many ways, perhaps because I saw an overlap where others did not.
I sometimes feel like I developed a kind of "third gender" in my mind, and that I operate on that peception. Perhaps the transgender brain being androgynous or just unique from cisgender brains can account for some of that.
People tend to have a black-and-white view of gender role, and especially the average Joe Q Public will have serious doubts about the integrity and personhood of a person with a widely divergent social demeanor from their apparent gender. The sales guy was truly miserable and got nowhere in life because his entire worldview and way of interacting with others was so typically masculine it made people mistrust him intuitively and fundamentally as a woman. He valued his livelihood and financial survival over his sexuality, and started hormones about six years ago. it didn't cure his Asperger's, in fact he is still a horrible nerd and tends to have even more issues with routines and being "out to lunch" but people take this in stride because it's coming from a man. I knew her/him throughout this change and I watched a tortured shadow of a soul blossom into a great guy. I strongly believe the treatment was appropriate in this case considering how much other baggage he shed by undergoing it: chronic depression, anxiety, identity crisis, bitterness, hostility, social and financial ruin, drug abuse, and being preyed upon by psychiatrists eager to find something that wasnt there, or make it up entirely.
This is a very heartening story. I'm quite glad it worked out so well for him. Many people who willingly undergo a transition to be assigned a different social gender occasionally do regret it (such as cisgender people who basically make themselves transgender this way), but in general it is very successful and positive. Claims that gender reassignment is harmful, bred in delusion, or immoral just aren't confirmed by observation and reason in any remotely substantial way. Rather, it's the opposite.
As you say, on average people tend to insert a very clear line between male and female and see them in a dichotomous way. For those who are unfortunately enough to not live up to this and are caught in the middle, life can be extremely miserable. People just don't want to change their preconceptions, despite how selfish and unrealistic they may be.
I want to comment briefly on how some people state that gender reassignment affirms sexism and gender stereotypes by accepting gender categories. I always want to ask these people how willing they are to devalue the happiness and health of individuals for the sake of a goal that may not actually help fight sexism. It's true that some transgender people advocate rigid gender roles and normativism, but that is not by virtue of their being transgender. On the whole, simply being transgender defies traditional norms and stereotypes. A transgender person is someone who, while met with pressure to be defined by those around him or her, stops and says, "I know myself better than that, thanks. I can define myself." They take gender normativism and break it right in half.
Saying that trans people shouldn't transition, or that they only should if their situation is dire, is just another commandment given out to people based on their gender, with no regard as to whether or not the commandment really is good for any given person. What is unfortunate is how many such people are femininists. It is as though such people want to say it's okay for, say, a man to act femininely and perhaps dress femininely, and that this would be defying norms . . . but for such a person to self-identify as a female instead of a feminine male is somehow affirming norms? They say that trans people should accept themselves as they are, but ignore the fact that some kind of transition is often what they really want anyway. And not to mention how it glosses over the very serious problem of not being accepted by society, and what a huge difference that can make. You cannot spend your whole life fighting. You cannot spend all your energy and forsake yourself in order to "take down the system." Even if you could, trans people can be just as instrumental against sexism and gender normativism with gender reassignment, if not more so.
In the abstract, it could be said that your friend was empowering stereotypes about women and men and "admitting" that a woman couldn't be masculine, but I see that as very sophistric and more than a little self-righteous. For one, he was showing that someone assigned the female gender at birth can be masculine - and moreover, can even be a man! And it presumes what would be the right course in such a situation. When facing such pressures on a daily basis, you have to make a choice. It's both disingenous and callous to say that he should have had to continue living as a woman "to prove a point," meanwhile treating his struggles and unhappiness as an acceptable, even negligible, price to pay.

aww so your sister is also transgender as well mamelon? I hope she is handling it well like you but ill always pray for you and the people you care about the most.
Actually, I don't know if she is. She might be, but it's uncertain. She has been saying suggestive things, including that she wants to be referred to as a boy, that she's not really a girl, etc. I recently asked her if she were to have a wish to be granted by a genie, if she would ask to be a boy. She only said she'd have to think about it because she wasn't sure.

Mamelon; another thing I've noticed about gender. So many people believe that sexuality and gender identification are raised into a person. Additionally, they also believe a gay or transgendered individual must have been raised 'wrong', as if somehow a child who is gay or transgendered is a mistake by nature.
Quote from Psychoburner »
As I have stated before, my parents made no strong attempts at making me be a man. I grew up to be a masculine person, and I m in no way a woman. However, I still possess traits that are atypical of a 'man'. I am sensitive, I appreciate art, and I am somewhat emotional. Still, this does not make me less of a man, this makes me a well rounded person.
Very good point, and just what I am trying to say, as well. You needn't fit into all of the different norms associated with maleness in order to be masculine or to be comfortable with being male. As you say, you are well rounded. It is not necessarily a "natural" part of being man to lack sensitivity, aesthetic sense, etc. A man very much can have these qualities without necessarily being especially feminine. And more importantly, men can be, and are, feminine. They are generally more masculine, and they identify with their masculinity, but they have naturally feminine qualities and can embrace them without problem. That's kind of what I was talking about when I said that maturity or inner peace tend to be linked to androgyny - or at least, rise above gender stereotypes.
You didn't need to be raised into a masculine identity in order to have one. Nor is that threatened by not following norms, or having feminine or androgynous qualities. I'd say that the way your parents raised you allowed for you to have these qualities and to be comfortable with them, and gave you a secure sense of gender identity instead of teaching you that it was in danger.

I looked at it. I would chime in if I had read the WOT series. As far as I'm concerned, the argument went south fast when that one guy questioned the invention a good drow (by opening Pandoras box). Such unwavering opinions, especially when they are wrong! ;), do not warrant my attention.
Quote from Shaharazad »
Not to sound overly mean, but they look like unimaginative fanboys. *shrug* I wouldn't expect much, you know?
All that tom foolery... acting as if Pandora's box wasn't opened in the first place!
Especially since my proposal wasn't really that controversial, nor did it "force" gender ambiguity on anyone. I also agree that the good drow argument was a bad one. I've never been a fan of alignment restrictions. He seemed to be saying that his players would just be out of control unless there was a rule written down that they had to roleplay a certain way. Not only is that a slippery slope fallacy, but he's discounting that what the Narrator says always goes, regardless of what a rule does or does not say.
Anyway, it seems to have improved now.

Okay, I seriously need to stop playing so much Pokémon and do something else for a while. I just got Dialga and frankly, I'm almost thinking that I shouldn't use him. I mean Steel and Dragon? Come on, that's almost not even fair. Besides, my Marowak is so powerful that nothing can stop her, so it isn't like I need anything else =)
Congrats on RotW, Kev/Cecilia! You deserve it =)
Also, a note to Broken Mandala players (since most of you are in here anyway): UPDATE. From me, that is. Now go play =P
Blah i just got creamed by this bridge deck with dredge so i lost 0-2 at least i got him down to 1 life the 2nd game heh. Im probably going to drop from the tournament if i lose round 4. I probably wouldve done alot better if i was playing with uw control or some control deck though. Oh well thats alright ill play one more round see if i can win the next one.
Thanks ether and mamelon it means alot to be rotw.

Ach, I'm sorry to hear that Cecilia. Do you think it was just the luck of the draw? Or was the bridge really nasty?
I tell you one thing, I'm sideboarding 4 leyline of the voids in my dragonstorm deck, because bridge is just faster then I am when it has good hands. I may put in 2 toromond's crypt if it gets really bad. I'll just set back and let them ramp up to Krosan Grip (or whatever) while I set up the perfect storm hand in the meantime.
For my Pyromancy deck, it's a little better of a match though.
Goodluck to you with your interview alacar at walmart. I hope you get the job and im happy for you.
Well i just wanted to drop by and i am going to play all 7 rounds in the standard tournament despite of me losing another round but hopefuly i can pull through though. I dont think 4 tormod's crypts will be enough to stop narcodredge decks though and i shouldve added more draw and put draw in the main deck like ohran vipers and harmonize but thats okay.
@shah: Its okay im not upset anymore about it. yeah it couldve been luck of the draw since he played 2 magus of the bazaars in just the first couple of turns and i had no way of getting rid of them since i was playing with mono green aggro but if i did had some sort of creature removal then i probably couldve stand alot better chance. I did however managed to get him down to 1 life in game 2 which is pretty good since i only play with 4 tormod's crypts in the board and i shouldve put harmonize instead of ohran vipers in the sideboard so i can draw more cards at a faster rate if i did had harmonize in there i probably couldve won game 2 and had a shot at winning game 3.
Mono green has a pretty good chance against most decks. I think project X can be an uphill battle, due to all the lifegain and resiliant blockers, but I think overall it's got a fighting chance against any deck, and isn't as reliant on the sideboard as some other decks are. Mabey you should go all out to fight narcobridge. Use 4 leylines and some crypts too. I think leyline is a stronger answer to the problem, but redundancy doesn't hurt.
I'm psyched Photon and Ether are back. Go go Broken Mandala!
I'm going to be afk mostly from now on. I'm in an adult swim mood tonight, and I'm sipping a late night cappuccino. I have nothing to do tomorow other then go to the ciropractor, so I'm good.
One sucky thing happened though today. In my car, I had a 12 pack of coke, and it exploded due to the heat. I have a good sense of humor about it though, and laughed at it as I cleaned, but the real sucky thing is that the coke got down into the mechanisims of my windows and I'm going to have to get them repaired. I don't have air conditioning in my car either, so it's le suck.

awww sorry what happened to you today.
Yeah i almost beat Project X with mga in the last round if only i used my sideboard in game 2 but i was being lazy.
Yeah i wish i could go all out at fighting against narcobridge but unfortunelty i can't change my deck because of the rules. Thats what i get for not playtesting against narcodredge which i should of somewhat since narco is a deck to beat in standard. Oh well my knowledge of type 2 is pretty lacking anyway. I have decided to play all 7 rounds though just to give some good insight to hunter whose playing with mono green aggro.

Still morning here. But the same things apply...I would like to leave early today and make a halfhearted stab at being at FNM on time.
Yesterday I went to the new game store to play theme deck Arena league but nobody showed up. So the store owner and I played a board game instead. It was sort of sad, they were getting some phone inquiries about the league but I guess those people decided not to show. I've all but quit Magic entirely. I refuse to go and dump money into MODO and still can't get MWS to work on this comp. I tried booting up the old compy with MWS installed, and it can't get on the internet...no way to discover what's wrong. Next I'm hoping to teach my cat to play Magic. He does have opposable thumbs...
It's May 18 and still no news on my ultrasound application. Maybe this is one of those situations where if you don't hear back before a certain date, you may assume you are no longer being considered. Sort of a rejection-by-silence. I'd lke to know sooner rather than later because I expect to get rejected, and just need to know so I can start applying to imigrate as a skilled worker soon. That takes a year or more...imagine living on a drugstore clerk's wages for a year while juggling medical bills and student loan payments.

hehe blushes thanks mamelon. I wish mono green aggro had more unblockable creatures that actually are immune to darkblast and also so it can dodge stinkweed imp which is the main reason why i couldnt keep up in the matchup. I got him down to 1 life during game 2 with the help of tormod's crypts but it wasnt enough. I want to play against the same deck i did in the next round though because its possible i was off in timing using the 2nd tormod's crypt if i did that then i probably couldve won. But it was the very first time i actually played against narcodredge so thats probably why I bet a more experienced green aggro player like hunter probably would win that matchup. I believe its all about the timing when using the tormod's crypts against narcodredge.
Sorry about that i just wanted to get that off of my chest. Good morning coffeehouse! I am going to get ready for work in about 35 minutes just wanted to stop by and say helllo.
@hunter: yeah those siege gang commanders and warchiefs are hard to find but im surprised you were able to find a set of ringleaders and piledrivers though lol. Goodluck to you in your FNM as well.
@snoop: awww i hope you hear from the ultrasound program if you do and goodluck in the field. I was thinking about going back to the x-ray program after i get higher up in the grocery store company i am working at like being a supervisor that would be cool to go back to the xray program considering alot of people didnt think that i could finish the program and they all said its not the right field for me but ill show them all.
See you all soon and have a great day or night everyone! *hugs and blows kisses to everyone*
Tee-hee. At least someone spotted what I was doing :).
Unbelievable. I nag ether to update Wasted City, and promptly roll a natural 1 for my attack roll. WHY DO DICE HATE ME? Seriously, if I ever hit the casinos, I'm steering clear of anything that involves dice. I never, ever win.
Friday afternoon is here, and with it the urge to not do anything. I really need to do some studying, though. Let's see how much energy I can summon up.
It's because you nagged. Not only is nagging the DM courting character death, but it also angers the dice gods.

I know how you feel, I'm pretty much in the same boat as far as MTG goes. I don't really have the gas money to drive out of town every week, and even then I wouldn't waste the gas to go face off against a collection of Minotaur Tribal decks, badly made sliver decks, and that one douchebag kid who always runs some all foil version of the Standard deck du jour. Meanwhile, on the home front, I basically only have my siblings and Josh to play against, and that is VERY, VERY boring. You can only face so many quirky blue Clone variant decks and RGB Aggro decks before you get tired of it.
Also, it sucks having to wait on someone to just tell you if an option you are hoping for is still valid or not. It's bad enough if you don't get it, but it sucks even worse if they waste several months of your life waiting to tell you about it.
I'm feeling sort of... well, I don't know how to describe it, exactly. You know how when you are single and you start to wax romantic, and as a result you just become wistful? It feels a bit like that, only drop the single part and replace "waxing romantic" with "I wish I were a lot hotter than I actually am".

Yeah. We had a lot of new, interesting decks going on for a while there, but playing against the same opponents is still playing against the same opponents over and over. It does get old.

Hey photon how are you? Its good to see you back and posting again.
Well if you want sometime we could play against each other in magic just casually over mws I think it will be fun. I am glad you and josh has came back to post on coffeehouse im sure all of us missed you guys. Well im going to get ready for work in 10 minutes im pretty happy i dont have work tommorrow though. See you all soon! *hugs and blows kisses*
@snoop: actually i been to one tournament thats similar to duel for duals it was a mws tournament though i was playing with funkbrew i went 23rd place out of 57 players there in legacy. It was funny that i was testing the funkbrew deck against goblins, threshold, and solidarity and all i played against was like the total opposite fish and angel stompy and i never playtested that much against those decks and i managed to do good getting 23rd place in that type of metagame out of 57.
@mamelon: thanks mamelon! You have a good day too!
Yeah. We had a lot of new, interesting decks going on for a while there, but playing against the same opponents is still playing against the same opponents over and over. It does get old.
Hope you get a job soon, Starr. It sucks so bad waiting on a call about applications.

@Kevin: See you soon. Have a good day today. *waves*
The two things that irk me the most about it are that A) there is no middle ground. You either match up against finely tuned tournament decks, or against cards that are effectively just thrown together at random. As a casual player, I like there to be some form of thought into deck design, but I don't necessarily want to be playing against spikish T1 and T2 decks. B) I hate how around here you always see the same thing over and over again. I think the most original deck we've ever seen was probably Anthony's Mountain Goat deck, and come on- that was freaking MOUNTAIN GOAT. So yeah. Sad.

's why I always appreciate a chance to play with my friends from Minnesota - the three Whiskeyteers we used to be - and Mean Sean with his annoying but highly synergistic and competitive quality casual decks using mostly control elements; and Matt Schmidt with his Future Sight tinker deck.
It's rare though that someone has a solid stable of decent casual decks that have stood the test of time. This takes a large and expensive collection, a far-reaching knowledge of the game, and a facility with control, combo, and aggro altogether. And if the format is limited to the most recent sets, it's much harder to find decent casual themes that "stand the test of time" because the "time" in that case is about 1 year.

good morning to you too shaharazad.
See you all soon! *hugs and blows kisses*

Awww, that's okay.
Hmmm. Lets leave that ambiguous.
