it's sort of strange. Of all the issues my parents dealt with when I was growing up, they were oddly liberal on this particular point.
My parents let me do as I pleased when it came to gender identity. If my dad saw me playing with dolls with my cousin (the only one my own age is a girl), he'd shrug, knowing that no harm would come of it.
My parents have never made me do anything based purely on my gender. My parents forced nothing upon me. They never made me play sports, they never said 'be a man'.
I tended to associate with girls more than boys throughout elementary and middle school. I could relate to them better. I was a 'non-traditional' person, still am.
My ramblings have one major point; I was not raised as a 'boy', I was simply raised. Doing this had no ill effects on me, and I am both physically and mentally a man.
Yeah, I'm the same way. I don't think my parents strove to drive some gender identiy into me. I did have my boyish traits. I liked to scuffle, and ride bikes and chase bugs with sticks outside hehe. I had my collection of transformers and GI Joe's and what not, but I also loved strawberry shortcakes! and I had some my little ponies and even one barbie doll. These were toys that drew my attention and they didn't seem worried about my interests.
I also had a handfull of characteristics that are effeminate. Like gestures or manerisims and so on, even though I'm straight. There's been times when a random person might have mistaken me as a homosexual even, but it didn't bother me. I am who I am, and I'm comfortable with it.
The funny thing, is that I feel so very confident in my masculinity, even though I don't always behave like the stereotypical male. I don't want it to sound like I'm making a sweeping generalization, because I'm not, but I feel as if I'm more confident and comfortable with my manhood, then many of the more machismo men that I've met.
It's not like my parents were walking on eggshells about gender identity, in fact, it was probably the furthest thing from their mind. I just think they didn't feel a need to herd me into a certain mindset.
That being said, I generally don't like the idea of a parent trying to mold their child into some gender stereotype, but at the same time, I don't like the idea of a parent making a big deal out of it by walking on eggshells.
@Magic - Good job coffeehouse! It will be so cool if you all make it in the top 8!
@Me - I'm still not feeling well. I'm a little better, but my head is still aching. I really think though, that it was a combination of dehydration and sinus pressure. Those two things playing together are just painfull.
I'm watching Blood+ and loving it. The art is so breathtaking and intricate. It really pleases my sensibilities. The story is also so deliciously slow without being needlessly drawn out. I still don't know what the hell is really going on, but it's being presented so expertly that I'm actually glad that it's taking time.
I'm also itching to test my new Pyromancer's swath combo deck to see if it can hold up at regionals.

As for me, my parents(mostly by my Mom) raised me as a child, turning into a boy, then into a Straight guy.^_^
Well my mom treated me like a momma's boy. Until now my mom interferes with my decisions and corrects me even if Im correct.Geez.
My parents and my brother&Sister bought me toys that were really for boys, they never gender-raised me but what they did is something thats right, since they said I always liked bein bossy and aggro(geez) when I was a child. They said I loved playing with guns and fighting all the way around. I remember my toys were of Marvel Superheroes and I didnt have a single female superhero around, because they said I didnt want that. My Gundam series also proved that I was really straight and I showed camaraderie with fellow boys with it. I showed respect and Shyness when I faced little girls of my age, and my mom always told me I dislike watching girl films. I grew up to be straight, I dont know the exact reasons why but maybe I was just like that.
When it comes to camaraderie and friendship, I dont care if ur a guy, gay, lesbian, girl, transgendered or whatever. If someone is like that, respect him/her or himher. We were all created by God's own image and likeness. And we have no right to discriminate anyone. As long as a person is kind, sweet and caring, friendly and all the good stuff, I like it. Being a gay or lesbian does not differ from being a man or a woman, and gender should not be an issue, since we are all but just human beings walkin in a planet called earth.
Ive had so many girlfriends and Im happy with my fiance now. Id be happy if "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" would visit me.
Hehe, isn't that the truth. When I first became a mod, I was shocked from my sudden new perspective. There's really a lot more to it then it seems.
Ur a Mod too?? How can I be a Mod?? Well I dont like handing infractions..Nopie nopie. But its cool to have "Moderator" title under your custom title.^_^
Im just kiddin around guys..
Whew! Ive been tweaking my XP for days now. Im makin it faster but it seems not to work at some point. Oh well.

Hehe. Not here. I'm an old hand at all this, and I've been around the block a few times.
Infractions aren't bad things. It's just a system set up to protect the quality of the community. Besides, that's not what being a mod is all about at the end of the day.
I'm trying very hard to not watch the rest of the second Lodoss war series all at once. I want to watch it right now, but I'm trying to force myself to savor it.
Edit: I appologize for my typos and misspellings. When I'm sick, I tend to overlook such things.

Awarding you a Green lightsaber sounds pretty good. Yeah hehe and the coolest thing about the Yoda of Legacy name is i didnt give myself that title one of my friends that plays in San Diego legacy tournaments(which is about 30-40 player legacy tournaments) quite alot gave me the name since i provide great insight when building legacy decks so now you know how i got my legacy title. Have a great night hunter and i am going to take off now get ready for work but ill be back in awhile. See you all soon! *hugs and blows kisses to everyone*

GP Legacy Columbus Tip: Before you play at this big legacy tournament and if your planning on playing in it and if your not playing hulk flash I highly recommend that you play with 4 leyline of the voids why? because they shut down the hulk flash's turn 0.5 wins even though it happens about 10-20 percent of the time but you would want every helpful card that you can get.
Yeah, flash is huge now...I can't believe it's going to be that way for the foreseeable future. @Leyline: at least the foil one in my binder should trade nicely now.
I had a real bad dream last night. I took off from work early in the dream, and went to the grocery store to pick up something I had pre-ordered. When I got there, the entire store was empty and the carpenters and stockboys were covering the windows with plywood and carting the last of the shelving away. I tried to stop someone and ask about my order and why they were closing on such short notice, and they wouldn't speak to me. They just kept repeating loudly "WE'RE CLOSED. CLOSED!" as if I didnt' know English.
On my way out the door, I passed by the Dumpster behind the store. I heard mewing and cries coming from inside. Sure enough, inside were several tiny kittens and one of them had fallen outside the Dumpster and was shivering on the pavement. I didn't have any way to carry them all back to safety...
Glad you're enjoying it. I don't know, I felt like some parts were really drawn out unnecessarily. I'm almost done with it now - I've only got seven episodes left. The story does take a surprising turn, that's for sure, and just... :o. Anybody that's seen it knows what I'm talking about. The one where you go "what the ****, did they just say what I think they said?".
Well, I'm off to visit the island today, so I need to get ready. Back later tonight.
I was raised with some kind of strict gender identity in mind, myself. Only from certain parental directions, though. My mother didn't seem to care much either way. My father, though, didn't want a plant in my room when I was an infant because it would "make me gay." I used to relaly enjoy some toys when I was a child that were pretty much girl toys - My Little Pony and othersuch things. I got a lot of flack from schoolmates and my stepdad for it, but there were others who weren't so perturbed.
Funny thing is that although I'm a homosexual male, I'm straighter-acting than a lot of the straight guys I know. I don't think anyone I know enjoys flexing their masculinity muscles half as much as I do. Call it an insecurity; I call it having a lot of fun with my gender =)
Maybe as a result of my upbringing or the way I view people as an adult, I'm stricter with my definitions of gender and gender roles than a lot of my friends. Not to say I discriminate or don't understand other people whose situations are different - quite the opposite, in fact.
In other news, Broken Mandala is up and running. I can already tell this group is going to be dyamite, so I'm really looking forward to seeing this plot unfold.
I'm glad that what I said helped contribute to the issue. My parents, I think, would have been okay with me had I turned out to be gay or bisexual. OR at the very least they would have learned to accept it. I think at one point my dad was prepared to deal with it if it came up. It was, in his opinion, a possibility. Even though he would have dealt with it, I think he breathed a sigh of relief when I started dating girls, lol.
My dad had never interacted with homosexuals in any way before. I exibited no obvious preferences until I was about 16 years old. Not that I wasn't interested, just that I kept my opinions to myself, and I generally still do. I started looking at girls in his presence to make sure he knew which way I was going...lol

Official Character Sheet Shredder of DAMNIT
DAMNIT: I should never have to shred my own character sheet in frustration.
Yeah I predict hulk flash will be 1/4 to 1/2 of the legacy field at gp columbus. I also don't think they will ban flash either because apparently its going to get alot more people into legacy and so wizards could make more money from legacy by holding even bigger tournaments and more frequently too. This is just a guess though but it does make sense if you look at their past intentions.
I am still planning on retiring from legacy for good though by december of this year since ive been playing the format for 3 years I had a long great run with my uw control in the format. I want to play more casual and also more standard too.
As much as I liked Mr. Nightmare's article he can't really predict the full future of legacy because everybody likes to play with their own decks regardless of what the veteran legacy players say about them. In reality though there is no such thing as the best deck in legacy its mostly because of the player playing with those decks and not the decks themselves.
Like for example Chris Pikula with BW homebrew nobody could reproduce the same results as he did when he took 2nd place at GP philly and even at the modern legacy tournaments before hulk flash like the 2006 legacy championships there was no homebrew deck top 8 there and the metagame was pretty much the same as GP philly except more solidarity and iggy pop which homebrew has a solid game against both of those combo decks.
When talking to people, we can usually build a pretty good image of ones gender idendity. We subconciously reconize certain basic personality traits and patterns and slap a gender label on it. What I have been noticing; if I do not express my gender in any definative way, people tend to identify me as a woman. I had a discussion with somebody the other night for example. When I told him I was transgenderred, he told me he could not see me as anything other than female.
This is good for me of course, but awful for someone whom identifies as male but has some strong feminine traits.
This isn't really a fast rule, I don't think. As for me, I know I've had many people assume I was a girl and assume I was a boy. I do think that someone who appears to have an eminently feminine personality will come across as being female, but sometimes "eminently feminine personality" isn't specific enough for some to pick up on. There's a good bit of fuzziness as to what it really means to be feminine or masculine. Some may say that one' listening style, diction, and emotional nature makes one seem feminine. One might also think that something like interest in video games makes one seem masculine. It's hard to tell because there is always a degree of subjectivity in how people view apparent gender-linked characteristics.
Of course, online there are other factors involved, such as having a boy or girl in your avatar, font color, etc. There often aren't any very strongly conclusive cues or features. However, I do think there are times when a person's behavior comes across as notably feminine or notably masculine. The words they use, the things they talk about, these can be very demonstrative.
I would imagine that in your case, Sakura, the person you were talking to picked up on behaviors, interests, and other character traits that struck him as being femimine ones - which is kind of the obvious conclusion. I know that I always had an image of you, even back when you went by ShinDash, as being a fairly androgynous person. At the time I knew you to be a guy (which is what you claimed back then), but I didn't see you as being particularly masculine.
On the flip side of the coin is the physical indicators. We look at people and label them with a gender with our eyes. It is not even the obvious traits, there are alot of subtle gender identifying traits. We do not realize we are judging people for them, but we are. We label people right from birth and try and shape people to conform to them. We all do, it is an instinctual thing.
Yes, as I said earlier, the most visible characteristics are used as an indicator. It could be said that this is instinctual, in that people tend to think more about particulars and when seeing specific traits in a person, attribute those same traits to people of the same category. There's availability heuristic, and observing patterns where patterns may not truly be, or assuming patterns are stronger than they are, and so on. We have very normativistic models of masculinity and femininity, and pidegon-hole people into either group, or which kind of lifestyle they are allowed to have. It's not absolute, but peole seem to feel quite strongly about their own gender identity, and about male-female distinctions. Since we are frequently selfish people throughout at least some points of our lives, we often wish others to embody our own ideas about our selves, our gender, and dislike for them to blur those distinctions.
I have discussed instinct vs choice before, mind you. It is the ability to realize what our instincts are telling us and to think passed them that makes the difference between a human being and a dog. In nature, these instincts in identifying gender are crucial to propagating the species. Outside of nature, propagating the species matters less than making people happy and comfortable with who they are. In a civilized world, well adjusted people make much more civilized decisions. Acting out as an animal by reacting to animal instinct just forces others to act as an animal back to protect themselves.
In nature, these instinctual judgements are crucial to your own survival. In civilization, well thought out decisions are crucial to the survival of everyone around you.
I was just thinking about this the other day. A community that most strongly prioritizes survival ends up being very darwinistic, in which disadvantaged people (like disabled people, sickly children, etc) are treated like failures and throwbacks, because the community needs to capitalize on having "the fittest." It sounds weird to say that there are more important things than survival, but it's true.
I'm not totally sure that gender norms and judgments are necessarily a matter of survival instincts, per se, though I see what you mean by acting like an animal as opposed to a person. It could be said that there are three factors which influence growth, personality, and decision making. The first is hereditary influences, instincts, biology, ingrained urges. The second is socialization, education, conditioning, and the values of those around us. The last is our own values, our personal decisions, making autonomous choices out of all of it. Moving beyond the first to the second requires maturity, and even more maturity to move from the second to the third. We are human beings capable of thinking and feeling on our own, knowing what drives us and being able to manage these influences and decide who we are. It's not so much about eradicating instincts or social pressures as it as about being aware of them, and being able to transcend them when necessary. Reason - and moreover, empathy - require us to be able to operate in this third way, and see what else there is to care about than our "baser" drives.
As you say, being concerned about having the fittest members of society and self-preservation are matters of urgency, and there is much more to life than urgent times in which we act at war with our surroundings.
Something not everyone here will want to agree with, but is scientific truth. I touched on this before. The Neurobiology of a man's and a woman's brains are very different from each other. Men are mentally geared towards hunter/gatherer/protector while woman are mentally geared towards child rearing. There are certain traits which make one more suited to the given tasks. Men are generally more analytical and women more emotionally based.
In general, I'd say it is scientific truth that there is a physical difference between a male brain and a female brain, just as there is between a male body and female body (pretending, for a moment, that brain and body are somehow not part of each other). However, when it comes to the details I wouldn't say it's so much scientific truth as it is theory. Sometimes very strongly based theory. There does appear to be a pattern of males being better at analytical thinking or "system" based thinking, while females seem better at some kinds of synthetic thinking and "symbol" based thought. However, many of these traits which appear in patterns have ambiguous basis, and could be instinctual or could be because of socialization. I wouldn't say that no details of personality, nature, and faculty are because of biology - gender identity, at least, appears to be. However, which ones are "natural" gender traits and which ones are taught is rather unclear.
There's an idea that males tend to have a naturally harder time understanding and expressing emotion. That's something I feel doubtful is really a "natural" part of being male, since males have emotions just as females do, and just as strong. They can be just as expressive of them as females can.
Another important thing to remember is that, just like self-preservation, we can "transcend" our ingrained tendencies. This doesn't mean getting rid of those tendencies, or changing those tendencies, but being able to perform tasks in spite of them. It's been said that an androgynous mind is the most intelligent kind of mind. What this means is that if a man does follow the pattern of being more proficient with analytical thought, he can still learn to employ typically feminine thinking skills and processes, and thus become proficient with both. He doesn't have to start acting like or identifying as a woman to do this. He doesn't have to compromise any of his masculinity to be flexible and not be rigidly limited by his tendencies. This is true of all tendencies. Introverts can learn to adapt and be more comfortable with extroverted situations, but that doesn't mean they really stop being an introvert. The Polish pscyhologist Kazimiersk Dabrowski (who is awesome) had a lot to say about transcending personality types in this manner, and that while it is essentilaly impossible to "change types," one can still be adaptive in spite of limiting tendencies and temperaments.
Similarly, many mystics say that one must be androgynous to be truly mature, one must "join together the man and woman one has inside." That has to do with empathizing with the other gender, and with being aware of the different levels of masculinity and femininity within the self. Much of that has to do with how masculinity and femininity are defined, of course. If gentleness and empathy are seen as being typically feminine traits (which they may not actually be, but anyway), then for a man to be kind and empathetic would be, in a sense, him acting androgynously.
I do think it is part of maturity to know that we are more than our gender, and that we don't have to be restricted by that. Enjoying or claiming one's gender identity doesn't get in the way of that.
And there are also people who are naturally more androgynous than others. Just as people comes in all shapes in sizes, they have myriads of sorts of personality, levels of masculinity, femininity, and ability. Two males can look very different (one small and slim, the other tall and broad), and yet both look basically male. In the same way, two men can have very different personalities, and have different degrees of femininity and masculinity, and yet still both be comfortably masculine people. Some people do blur the line, and that's not a bad thing. Some people just defy the typical patterns, and there are also trans people who seem to be almost directly in the middle, even be part of both genders at once.
Just for fun, the professor in our college English course asked us who in the room felt they were more logical/analytical than emotional/creative. This was a liberal arts class, so it was dominated by females. Out of 20 some people in the room, myself and the only other guy in the room raised our hands. That was it. I don't subscribe to stereotypes by a longshot, but many of our stereotypes do actually have some kind of basis in reality, and on that day, it held true.
Yeah, that's interesting. One of the other members of this site and I were in a discussion in which we were talking about the different ways boys and girls are raised and educated. He was saying that kids of both genders should be exposed to areas of study and activity associated with each gender, such as boys being taught to cook and sew and girls taught to play sports. And I pointed out that while this would be a good idea, at the end of the day there are going to be a lot of kids who do follow the pattern, girls who want to play with dolls and like home ec, and boys who want to play baseball, and so on. We just need to give equal acknowledgement and accomodation to the kids who don't follow the pattern.
That, and as was said, it is quite false to think that men and women are the same excepting a different set of reproductive organs. There are lots of differences in hormones and chemistry that differentiate how we act and respond to different situations. There are different variations on this to be sure, just as some people are short and others tall, but the difference is more pronounced across gender lines.
Exactly. I usually summarize it by saying that while masculinity and femininity aren't absolute and aren't binary, males do tend to be more masculine and females do tend to be more feminine.

EDIT: My mom called, and got my Mother's Day present yestarday. She likes vintage newspapers and music so I sent her a CD of old music from the late 20's through the early 40's. Most of it is big band music but there was some blues and old war songs.

Because the American public has very poor gay-dar, and to the media execs the difference must be obvious and campy so that they can be sure people will pick up the drama. If the gay guys choose not to respond to gay bashing, there is no drama and no market. So only the most flamboyant and outspoken gay guests and roles make it onto such shows.
And also, because gay-protagonist shows were ultimately unsuccessful in the 90's not because they were about gays, but because there was no existential drama related to being gay in a gay-dominated show.
Me: So why don't you watch The Ellen Degeneres Show?
My bi friend: Um, because it's boring? I'd much rather watch ER.
@Ceci, no I can't go this year. No money + I really haven't had time to do any playtesting. What's more, I don't own any Flashes or anything thta could deal with Hulk Flask.
Havn't had time to look at coffee-finement yet, but last time I saw the version of the deck it was decent...dunno how it will do.

Thanks for your time to look at my decks though it is greatly appeciated. Yeah i could understand money is always the issue for me as well to go to big events.

@Cecilia: Uhm I cant seem to understand the goodness of the Protean Hulk+Flash. Is it really that good? I can see you could flash him, but what difference does it make? Sorry for the noobness since Im kinda used to standard play nowadays..The old decks I really like were Wild Mongrel Madness decks, and fires of yavimaya+Saproling burst decks, things like that..
@Snoop: DOnt worry of your dream Snoop, here in the Phil, dreams are believed to be the other way around..
@Gender: I still dont know why this has become a really big issue, but I have posted my thoughts about it previously and again I dont care about the gender of a person. Whoever the person is, as long as he/she kind hearted, were cool.
@Kraj: Hi Sexy..
@MBM: Keep up the Good Work. Maybe if ever Im stupid again to do something, give me one. Well anyway Ive read so many rules so maybe Ill be going along fine.
Anyway few people ever really noticed the topic I posted before..So maybe I will just leave the topics for you guys to start. Eventhough Im thinkin gender is not an issue in real life. Well, maybe thats just meh.
Our neighborhood's water supply has been cut due to some factors..We didnt have the chance to save...Geez Im just gonna pump out water from the ground again..:(

@Cecilia: Uhm I cant seem to understand the goodness of the Protean Hulk+Flash.
The short version is the card doesn't just let you flash a creature like Teferi, it let's you put a creature directly into play and then sacrifice it if you don't pay for it. See the problem now?

@Mr Stuff - That sounds so awesome! You deserved a nice day like that. Everything about it sounds fantastic.
Actually it's worse than that, Alacar. You can fetch all zero-toughness creatures with the Hulk, which means SBE effects will put them into the graveyard and trigger the Disciples before your opponent ever gets priority, which isn't true with the Ravager version.
Also, with Gemstone Caverns and an Elvish or Simian Spirit Guide, you can fire off the combo on turn zero. :/

Lastly, if anyone is bored, click on [Llwyr] in my sig and critique my latest D&D character
Hehe, isn't that the truth. When I first became a mod, I was shocked from my sudden new perspective. There's really a lot more to it then it seems.
You like Heroes too?
Thanks, for the well wishing. I'm making myself a nice tall cup of coffee as we speak so hopefully that will help.

Hehe.
Happy mother's day everyone i am probably going to get my mom a mother's day card when i am at work.

My dad had never interacted with homosexuals in any way before. I exibited no obvious preferences until I was about 16 years old. Not that I wasn't interested, just that I kept my opinions to myself, and I generally still do. I started looking at girls in his presence to make sure he knew which way I was going...lol

Cecilia

Exactly. I usually summarize it by saying that while masculinity and femininity aren't absolute and aren't binary, males do tend to be more masculine and females do tend to be more feminine.

So, the brother-in-law is over right now talking about some David Blaine show where he pissed off a couple of gay guys. Seriously...why is it always the REALLY gay ones who are let on TV? >_<;;

Yeah im probably not going to go as well and thanks for the compliment on the coffee-finement deck i know pre flash it was a decent legacy deck but post flash i probably wouldnt know how it will do either.

@Kraj: Hi Sexy..

The short version is the card doesn't just let you flash a creature like Teferi, it let's you put a creature directly into play and then sacrifice it if you don't pay for it. See the problem now?
Current New Favorite Person™: Mallory Archer
She knows why.
1) Play Flash, putting Protean Hulk into play, then sacrificing it.
2) Fetch 4 Disciple of the Vault, 4 Ornithopter, 1 Phyrexian Walker, and 1 Arcbound Ravager.
3) Sacrifice all the artifacts. Good game.
Worst part is, you can pull this off turn 1 before your opponent can do a thing, with a Lotus Petal and a land.
