A dud in limited, very much designed for commander and MAYBE constructed with a lifegain theme or some shenanigans- wait. Gideon's Sacrifice maybe?

Varina, Lich Queen seems like a good fit. Discard your creature cards, gain life to help you survive the hit, cast command the dreadhorde, profit!

This just seems bad. 6 mana is way too expensive for the setup required to mitigate the damage cost.

This card has amazing Jank potential in combination with Gideon's Sacrifice and Truefire Captain.

Yeah. The only real use I have found for Truefire Captain so far is as a sideboard in my gates deck (it is actually a pretty good finisher with Gates Ablaze) and, even though I like the card, it's mana cost and ability don't really fit. A while ago, I played a similar fun deck with Stuffy Doll + Pariah + Volcano Hellion which was frankly hilarious but not competitive at all--counters and non-damage permanent removal just killed it. However, if you get the combo, you can deal arbitrarily large amounts of damage against the opponent (e.g. 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000)

Truefire Captain is kind of hilarious with Gideon's Sacrifice in general TBH. Swing for lethal when they have one white mana open? Congrats, you played yourself.

Some way to mitigate the damage on this and it's ridiculous in the later game.

After further consideration, I think that this could be really powerful with the right companions. The Wanderer + Spark Double = no noncombat damage gets through unless they kill either through exile/destroy. As red doesn't play this in Bo1, this could capitalize on them in an esper shell. The finisher would be Command the Dreadhorde to bring back all of the countered, discarded or killed creatures and planeswalkers from both graveyards (similar to The Eldest Reborn, but scaled up to 11).

Now THIS is a flavor homerun. Black at its finest. You get to have whatever you want out of anybody's graveyard, but at a terrible cost.

I want this for commander so, so very badly.

I think this would be pretty fun with cards like platinum emperion. 6 mana to get everything from graveyards under your control. Of course, I only play EDH, probably not great in modern or standard.
