This... actually strikes me as a pretty smart card.
A straight-up exaggeration of Barter in Blood that kills an extra creature for 1-2 extra mana would suffer from some very real problems in that the normal asymmetries those cards take advantage of (opponents having creatures and you not having them) would probably be close to killing you by the time you reach 6 mana.
With this card, though, you get a future cushion of 9 life to call upon if you just extracted yourself from a tough situation against aggro/midrange and need to recover while they regroup. Big fan of the design and I could imagine esper control decks running a couple copies in standard.
