Decently aggressively statted creature with what basically amounts to a very life-expensive Lim-Dûl's vault on ETB. I wouldn't call it Standard playable, but perhaps there's a Nightmare tribal deck out there somewhere that would love this.

No, it's not on ETB, but you will only get the value once since you will be paying life until you are uncomfortable paying life. Just remember that card selection is not nearly as good as card draw, and this isn't actually giving you value, unless your deck is specifically designed to function out of the graveyard. Gnaw to the Bone might be a good idea with this one.

This looks fantastic.

Not standard playable? You're evaluating this card totally wrong, haha.

It's a control finisher that can come out on turn 5 and always gets value. Probably gets sided out vs burn but that's fine.

One of the strongest cards we've seen in the set.

It could see play in Standard because its a great follow up to Bolas in Grixis or other black midrange decks and has an ability that Teferi control decks will hate. They have to counter it (moot point),otherwise when they kill it/bounce it you just pay life in response and get lots of card selection since your life total is usually high in most games. Also blocks Lyra Dawnbringer in combat.

So... it's a super cost-efficient body that blocks most other aggressive threats indefinitely while letting you search for answers at will. The ability to dig down for another nexus of fate may turn turbo-fog into an esper deck.

Creative design, but a missed self-combo opportunity. Should have had power = number of cards in your graveyard in order to give a reason to spend lots of life on the ability. At 5 mana and mythic rarity, I don't think that's unreasonable.

Um. What's the drawback on this demon, exactly? Because all I see here is a 6/6 flample for 5 with even more upside.

Demons having hard drawbacks hasn't been a thing for a while now, especially at Mythic. I mean, given how far creatures have come, you would have to give it some pretty bonkers P/T/Keyword combo to make a LordOfThePit analogue up to par.

There isn't one. It being a mythic is probably why they pushed its power level. The other demon in standard has drawback due to being rare maybe?

there is a massive difference between lim-dul putting the cards you aren't looking for on the bottom of your lib and this who put them in the GY to fuel GY shenanigans.

All those cards would be great in a Surveil deck. Only problem is that both the Kaladesh and Amonkhet blocks are rotating out of Standard upon the release of Guilds of Ravnica...

It seems like a great card none the less though and I'm definitely including this flying, evil ball of arms in some graveyard-matters deck.

Tbh I'm not much of a standard player. I used to dabble in modern a bit and there is a pretty strong dredge deck there. Obvs we don't have enough pieces to make a dredge deck at that level but Narcomoeba is in the modern list and is getting reprinted. Thoughtbound Phantasm seems like a decent 1 drop for a surveil deck. Radical Idea and Chemester's Insight are card draw spells you can cast from the gy. Necrotic Wound could be strong if you build the deck more creature heavy. Looking outside of Ravnica, Dread Wanderer is another 1 drop option[/c],
Cut // Ribbins is strong if we want to add red which isn't the worst idea for more izzet Jump-Start cards. Driven // Despair for sultai and green undergrowth cards. We can't forget that crucible of worlds is in standard thangs to the new core set.

Idk if the makings for a whole deck are spoiled yet but I think there is enough for a standard player to experiment with

But in Standard it feels to me like hardly an impactful difference at all.

Oh my bad. I knew Kaladesh was rotating, I didn't realize Amonkhet was too. I guess that makes sense though. Narcomoeba and crucible are the real winners of the cards I mentioned and those will be in standard.

Someone will break this, not sure how, maybe some necrotic ooze shenanigans? I mean 5 mana for a 6/6 flying trample is quite impressive... and you can use the ability like once or twice a turn until you draw a deece card? Seems super powerful...
