Between this card and rain of notions, I think that losing life might be gone. Given that all form of noncombat damage prevention (including protection) are basically dead, I can get that.

There are plenty of cards that don't specify any further than Midnight Reaper does, old ones too:

Dauthi Ghoul
Dross Harvester
Gladehart Cavalry
Goblin Sharpshooter

I get that it isn't the most commonly used phrasing, but there isn't much to be misunderstood either.

I think I'm missing your point. Where's the problem in the wording?

Every time a nontoken creature you control dies, this knight draws you a card and pings you for 1.

That covers both itself and any other creature you control, that isn't a token. If a token copy has been made, said copy will no longer be a "nontoken" creature, therefore not triggering off of itself. Seems quite simple.

There is no need for them to say "another" because it is not a token itself. However, if you can make a token copy of it, I believe it will trigger off of itself.
