This isn't really pushing the statline that we can allow on creatures that cost a lot of mana, but it's a good argument for why vanilla creatures are bad regardless of statline if they are expensive. Not even that much better than Hollow Dogs.
This is going straight into my Varolz, the Scar-Striped commander deck! Paying five mana for 9 +1/+1 counters on any of my creatures is a pretty sweet deal.
It may be vanilla but it seems pretty good if you have a card in hand that can protect him. It might be worth trying in a black and blue deck where you can give him hexproof and make him unblockable even for just one turn.
