You need to let him go to the graveyard, but you can place him in the command zone instead of the exile when his ability resolves, similar to Mangara of Corondor. Also, this is an interesting templating to let dying triggers work on a Commander.

Most people in commander Exile instead of destroying, but with an instant sacrificer like ashnod's altar, it might work

you probably dont want to use it as a protection from opponents boardwiping, rather taking advantage of his ability and running many boardwipes yourself

that way you can ensure gerald dies and isn't exiled. and if you have an instant speed boardwipe like fault line you basically have a cyclonic rift for creatures (without flyign but shh)
