Looking Ahead To Magic: The Gathering In 2025

It’s almost time to turn the page on 2024, and with the last set of the year now in the rearview mirror, we thought it would be a good time to look ahead to what Magic: The Gathering has in store for players in 2025.

2024 was packed with incredible sets, from the recently released Foundations, visiting the cutesy world of Bloomburrow, exploring the irradiated wasteland of Fallout, and much more. 2025 looks to also be similarly stacked, with announcements at MagicCon Vegas laying out much of the roadmap for its major set releases next year, including three new Universes Beyond sets, a new remastered set, and a return to a fan-favorite plane in the Magic Multiverse.

Here’s what we know about Magic: The Gathering’s sets on the horizon in 2025.

Innistrad Remastered

Release date: January 24th, 2025

Innistrad Remastered marks the first major set release of 2025, bringing players back to the gothic plane of Innistrad, one of Magic’s most iconic locations. The upcoming set features reprints from across Innistrad’s history and will also see a reprint of a much-requested Vampire commander, Edgar Markov.

Edgar Markov Movie Poster Treatment Innistrad Remastered

First printed with Commander 2017, Edgar Markov is taking center stage with Innistrad Remastered, kicking off a new card treatment: headliner cards. Edgar Markov will be seeing his own Movie Poster card in addition to the various booster pack card treatments we’ve now come to expect from Wizards of the Coast in recent years.

Aetherdrift

Release date: February 14th, 2025

Aetherdrift is the next Standard-legal set in the rotation, bringing players to three separate planes in an epic, thrilling death race. While the three planes haven’t been specifically revealed, it’s pretty clear that we’ll be returning to Kaladesh at the very least, as well as the desert plane of Amonkhet, revisiting both more fully for the first time since pre-War of the Spark. The prize? The Aetherspark is up for grabs.

Aetherdrift features a new card type, a Planeswalker Artifact, marking the first time we’ve seen the iconic card type melded with another, as revealed in the card for The Aetherspark. Additionally, each color pair will represent a different team, with up to ten racing teams, all vying for the prize. We’ll see a return of some familiar faces, including Chandra Nalaar, the return of Gearhulks, and more.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm

Release date: April 11th, 2025

Tarkir: Dragonstorm brings players back to one of Magic’s most popular planes: the eponymous Tarkir. The set brings back the factionalized gameplay the original Khans of Tarkir was known for, as well as epic dragons to build around.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm Dragonfire Card treatment Ugin and Sarkhan Vol

The new set will also see the return of two fan-favorite characters: the spirit dragon himself, Ugin, as well as Sarkhan Vol. While the card art showcased thus far makes it clear that Ugin will be a Planeswalker card, Sarkhan looks to be desparked as a creature card. Both will also be given the booster fun Dragonfire card treatment.

Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy

Release date: June 13th, 2025

The first Universes Beyond set of 2025 (and the first UB set to be standard legal), the upcoming set will bring characters from across Final Fantasy’s expansive list of games and worlds to the Magic multiverse. This includes cards featuring iconic characters such as Final Fantasy VII’s Sephiroth, Final Fantasy XIV’s Emet Selch (who did nothing wrong, mind you), and more across the mainline games.

In addition to iconic characters, Final Fantasy will feature cards showcasing locations, monsters, weapons, iconic creatures such as Moogles and Chocobos, and much more. During MagicCon Vegas 2024, Wizards of the Coast shared that the upcoming set will also feature the largest collection of Final Fantasy art in one place, making it not only a Final Fantasy fan’s dream but hopefully a powerful set to build around as Universes Beyond starts its journey as part of Magic’s premiere Standard format.

Edge of Eternities

Release date: August 1st, 2025

Tezzeret Edge of Eternities MTG Set

Edge of Eternities highlights Wizards of the Coasts willingness to expand beyond the traditional fantasy settings Magic: The Gathering has historically been known for. The franchise's first true space-fantasy set (my guess is we aren’t including Unfinity in here), Edge of Eternities will explore the Sothera system, featuring familiar faces, such as Tezzeret.

The headliner card for this set will be Sothera, the Supernatural, featuring a new foil printing type that will be first released with Edge of Eternities.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Release date: TBA

Magic: the Gathering Spider-man announcement logo

Marvel’s first major Universes Beyond set, Spider-Man is making its debut next year sometime in the fall. We don’t know anything other than the set is Spider-Man themed and it will be Standard legal alongside all Universes Beyond sets moving forward.

Unannounced Universes Beyond Set

Release date: TBA

We know even less about this set, other than it looks like our return to Lorwyn has been pushed back in favor for a third UB set in 2025. This is slated to release after Spider-Man, but that’s about all that has been announced about this unannounced set thus far.

Magic: The Gathering is looking like it’s going to have a big year in 2025, and this is before we learn about any additional collector’s product coming down the pipeline, namely the host of Secret Lair drops Wizards no doubt has in the works. It’s going to be an interesting 2025 with Universes Beyond finally making its Standard debut in a big way with Final Fantasy, and it’ll be something to watch to see if these sets are as disruptive as the Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set was for Modern last year. Time will tell.
