Another New Beginning

Back in 2019, MTG Salvation readers must have been suffering from a case of whiplash, as the website announced it would be closing, and then within a month staying open thanks to a purchase by Magic Find. Founded in 2005, MTG Salvation has a long history as one of the early sources of spoilers, MTG analysis and news, to running one of the longer, continually operated Magic: The Gathering forums on the internet.

As someone who had often read MTG Salvation while researching cards, decks, and more, I was sad to see that the site was going to shut down, and incredible happy when Chaud posted his “A New and Exciting Beginning” article just a month later.

Yet, as you can probably tell, not much has happened on the content front since then, though MTG Salvation has continued to operate, keeping its forums community alive while keeping up with spoilers and new sets as Wizards has released them.

That 2019 purchase by Magic Find helped to save MTG Salvation (as well as many other Curse/Fandom-owned websites at the time), and now it’s time for yet another beginning.

An Introduction of Sorts

Before you ask, no, MTG Salvation is not being sold again. Magic Find itself was acquired back in 2021 by parent company MOBA Network, which has seen the potential in MTG Salvation ever since that acquisition closed. But the stars hadn’t aligned on just how MTG Salvation would start this new era until more recently.

I guess I should introduce myself, assuming you’re still reading. My name is Joseph Bradford and I am the Managing Editor/Editor-in-Chief over at MTG Salvation’s sister site, MMORPG.com. I’ve worked as a games critic/journalist since 2012, writing for sites such as Playboy, PixelKin, GamesRadar+, IGN, and MMORPG.com, as well as self-produced over two hundred episodes of a podcast focused squarely on the games industry as a whole, Gaming the Industry (RIP).

I’ve been interested in helping out with MTG Salvation ever since I first met the folks at Magic Find, and the stars are all finally aligning to make it possible. So, moving forward, I’ll be helping to craft the editorial direction of this fair website, while we identify improvements that can be made to the site’s navigation, listings, and most importantly, the long-forgotten deck builder.

These changes won’t happen quickly, and you won’t see a massive influx of new content right away. We plan to trickle articles out a few week until we’re fully up to speed in 2025, with the goal to bring high-quality MTG analysis, set reviews, guides, deck tech, spoiler coverage and much, much more.

We will also be spinning up a New Player Guide, thanks to an influx of players coming to the TCG due to Foundations, but we understand as well that for many of our long-time community members, this isn’t really going to be compelling to you. So hopefully our other articles fill that gap for you.

I won’t be doing this alone, and one of the benefits of MMORPG.com as as sister site of MTG Salvation is I already work with an amazing lineup of freelancers, many of which are huge Magic: The Gathering fans, all eager to dive into this new opportunity.

Personally, this is yet another dream job that has come true. I first learned how to play Magic: The Gathering at the coffee table in my living room when I was about ten years old, thanks to a Portal Starter Kit my dad bought. The rest is history. While I haven’t played consistently since 1997, taking a bit of a break to have a kid around 2009, I got back into the game in 2012 when some friends invited me over to a Friday Night Magic get-together at their house.

Since then, my family has held consistent FNMs at one of our houses over the years, each of us battering each other with the same decks, not really caring about format unless we specifically set out to play Commander or Pioneer or something.

Kitchen Table Rules, as I like to call them.

It should be noted my favorite card is Cryptic Command, because I think it’s the perfect Magic card. It does everything a Blue player wants to do, and it’s so fun to just tap 1 UUU and say, “Nope,” and then draw a card. Or something else. It’s powerful, y’all.

As for who is joining me on this new endeavor, if you follow Magic: the Gathering coverage across the games industry, you might see a few familiar names:

Jason Fanelli (MMORPG, GameSpot, Rolling Stone)

Cody Gravelle (ScreenRant, Fanbyte, Game Rant, Face to Face Games)

Shane Breton (MMORPG, the resident Pioneer player at my FNM)

Ryan Easby (MMORPG, CardGamer, Fanbyte, PCGamesN, IGN, Lost in Cult)

Mike BC (MMORPG, always up for Commander)

It’s an exciting and new beginning to steal a phrase from Chaud, and we’re definitely looking forward to starting this new foundational coverage at MTG Salvation - just in time to pick up the tail end of the recent Foundations release

If you have ideas of what you’d like to see, improvements to the site you’ve longed to see implemented, leave us a comment, or message us on one of our social profiles: We’re on Twitter, Facebook, and the new hotness, Bluesky

Until next time, happy gaming!
