Although Amonkhet is declining, it is doing so slowly, and is actually doing a good job at holding its value. Its Pro Tour spikes aren't falling back at nearly the pace of other set's spikes. Hazoret continues to climb, even during the post-Pro Tour slump, as it is one of the most central pieces to the new Standard. It should level out soon, but don't expect it to have any major downturn in the near future.

Counterspell was in the midst of a buyout Thusday, so prices were swinging wildly throughout the day as product was quickly being listed and then bought. It's top price for the day hit around $120, but the $92 that I captured is more accurate to where it generally stayed. As of writing this, the price has settled around this mark as well. Although most buyouts seem to have little forewarning or presentiment, this buyout was directly a result of Cartel Aristocrats' August 15th webcast on Gathering Magic, which directly recommended buying it before a buyout happened. As this advice was taken by more and more players, stock started to dwindle further which then precipitated an actual buyout.
Sometimes innocent, cautious action creates a self-fulfilling prophecy. If enough people believe a bank is unstable and withdraw all of their money from it, the sudden loss of capital will cause the bank to destabilize, even if it was otherwise strong. This likewise happens when a popular card's inventory begins to diminish; the capacity of a buyout prospect is directly related to the availability of that card. Masterpiece cards have the lowest supply levels of all modern-day printed cards, and even small motions can create an avalanche.
Although Invocations is less popular than other Masterpiece sets, it is still filled with high profile cards that will forever be played in their legal formats. Damnation, Wrath of God, Armageddon... There are many eternal Invocations that will rarely see further reprint; they could be bought out at any moment. Damnation and Wrath are already primed and ready for a buyout. Even a small run on either could trigger full buyout mode. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this happens to either - or both - within the next couple weeks.

Aether Revolt is slowly becoming a very low-key set, as more and more of its cards fall off our table. We have gone from 20 cards at or above $2 at the set's release to a small dozen, with at least two more threatening to fall off within the next week or two. Overall, this set's value is now mediocre, but if its trends continue it very well may fall into the profitless range.

Chandra continues her ascent, being another cornerstone of the new Standard. Mark Rosewater joked about making Chandra better than Jace with this block, and while she's not nearly a Mindsculptor, she is by far the premier planeswalker in all of Standard. The rest of Kaladesh remains stable with little more than background noise for movement.

No buyouts in Inventions this week, although the whole set continues to climb. Although the gains are only around 1%, they are in stark contradiction of the normal timeline. Most sets, including the original Expeditions set, start over-inflated and slowly decline throughout their lifetime in standard. This happens with a fairly predictable ebb and flow, and a streamlined trend over time. The Masterpiece series has begun to break this mold, with Inventions being the most capricious example. At this point in the cycle, I should be telling you to sell what you have and reinvest later. While this can still apply to cards right after they are bought out and see a major spike, this is risky as an overall plan for the whole set. If you own any Inventions, watch the market carefully. Buying before a spike and selling after has the potential for strong profit. Perhaps we should invest in the set overall, as it may continue to rise for some time. I don't feel comfortable enough with it's wax and wane flow to broadly suggest this, however. Tread carefully, gauging your risk versus profit potential greatly.

Collective Brutality has definitely become this set's sleeper card. Every single card on our Eldritch Moon table is at or below its price from a year ago except two: Cryptbreaker and Collective Brutality. Cryptbreaker spiked with Black Zombies during the Hour of Devastation Pro Tour, and has leveled out at $1 higher than what it was tracking before. Brutality, however, has been steadily progressing upward since its release, and is now three times its price a year ago. It hasn't seen any large spikes, but has instead slowly creeped higher and higher as it gains popularity and use through a variety of formats. It will soon overtake Grim Flayer, being second only to the premier mythic of the set, Liliana.

Shadows saw very little movement outside of it's ever-downward march toward economical dystrophy. I find it ironic that Shadows' tables is longer than most of its Standard brethren, with considerably more cards above the $2 mark, while its overall value is definitely on the lower end. It is the lack of high value mythics that has both lowered the set's value, and simultaneously spread the value among a larger number of cards.

Overall Summary
As mentioned, we are in the slump that follows the huge boons of the Pro Tour. Prices are deflating to where they would have otherwise tracked. Ramunap Red's core cards continue to be higher valued, but most are adjusting downward from their massive escalation. We may see some minor fluctuations from the upcoming Grand Prix, but we're otherwise entering a lull that won't get broken until Ixalan's spoilers start. Opposingly, I expect Masterpiece buyouts to continue to be a recurring notion. Again, there's a lot of money that can be made in the Masterpiece sets, but it requires precise timing and more investment capital than other sets.
