The Magic Market Index: Final Review of Eternal Masters

Eternal Masters has come to an end of its time here on the Magic Market Index.  This article will look at how the prices fared as well as how the future looks for the cards of the set.  There will also how the set overall did and what were its mistakes.  Non Standard sets like this going forward will be on the list for around three months or until a new set is released.  Standard sets will be on the list from their release until when they leave Standard.   The final prices are take from the day this article is written and the first time the set is review*.

* Eternal Masters did not have an original set review, and June 2, the first time it appeared, was missing a few prices.  So June 9 was used instead.

The data came from TCGplayer Medium price. Prices are based on USD.

There is a second table to show cards that did not make the list but there is reason to review and comment about them.

The three questions ask.:

"Will this go up?" is asking will this card go in the near future based on foreseeable trends.  There is always a chance something may come along and change the value of a card, such as a reprint, banning, or unbanning.

"Could this be reprinted soon?" is asking what is the likeliness of the card be reprinted in the next two years.

"Is this worth going after?" is asking based on demand, price, and potential increases in both as to whether it is worth going after based on the foreseeable trends.

Eternal Masters

Card Name   Price on 8/28 Price on 6/9   Change in Price from 6/9 to 8/28   Will this go up? Could this be reprinted soon? Is this worth going after?   Comments

Force of Will $96.52 $89.11 $7.41 Y  N  Y Force of Will is one of the best cards In Legacy and Vintage and will always be. The chances for a reprint soon are low and not likely to be less than hard to get.
Mana Crypt $79.99 $107.97 $27.98 Y N  N If you need one for a deck, then it is worth getting now or very soon as in a few months, it will start going up.
Karakas $64.90 $98.97 $34.07  N N N Karakas has seen its highest days of value and while it is worth having in the binder, it is not worth going after unless you can get it cheap.
Jace, the Mind Sculptor $62.65 $69.97 $7.32 Y  N N Jace, the Mind Sculptor will go up, but demand will not go up too much.
Wasteland $41.48 $47.86 $6.38 Y Y  Y Wasteland has a decent chance of being reprinted. It will be a staple of Legacy and always worth having copies.
Vampiric Tutor $27.65 $27.24 $0.41 Y N  N Vampiric Tutor has a very narrow market and those that want it have already gotten it.  It will go up later due to it be a powerful card, but demand will keep up with supply.
Sneak Attack $24.49 $28.49 $4.00 N N N Sneak Attack is a great card but has a very limited range it can go into for Vintage and Commander.
Natural Order $22.85 $28.17 $5.32  N N N Natural Order has a narrow use in only a few decks. It is not worth going after unless you need it for a deck.
Sensei's Divining Top $20.33 $24.00 $3.67 Y N Y Sensei's Divining Top is not likely to get a reprint anytime soon, but it has a lot of value as a four-of in one of the better decks in Legacy and is a great card overall.
Dack Fayden $18.41 $21.99 $3.58 Y  N N Dack Fayden was a reprint and it is not likely it will be reprinted soon. That means its price should go up once demand for Dack Fayden goes up.

Entomb $14.72 $20.03 $5.31 N N N The demand for Entomb is directly tied to how popular reanimation strategies are. In Legacy, it is a solid deck, but those player mostly have those already. In causal decks, this is still kind of expensive to go after, and Commander players only need one.
Chrome Mox $13.99 $15.90 $1.91 N N N Chrome Mox did not drop to much, but demand did not increase too much. It sees play mostly in Legacy combo decks, so demand is not great.
Maze of Ith $12.48 $20.97 $8.49 N N N Maze of Ith's demand did not really increase, nor will it increase for anytime soon.
Maelstrom Wanderer $10.93 $14.17 $3.24 N N N Maelstrom Wanderer is a fun card, but it will take awhile for demand to return.

Gamble $10.00 $17.48 $7.48 N Y N Do not Gamble on this card. Any card that dropped by a lot is not a card to invest in.
Sinkhole $9.97 $18.00 $8.03 Y N N Sinkhole was a great reprint but really tanked value and demand. It lost almost fifty percent of its value.
Necropotence $7.99 $9.81 $1.82 N N N Necropotence will not go up in value much at all.
Argothian Enchantress $7.87 $10.97 $3.10 Y N N Argothian Enchantress will only go up inf the Enchantress deck becomes a top played deck. Otherwise, it will be a caudal favorite.

Toxic Deluge $7.17 $9.84 $2.67 N Y  N Toxic Deluge is a fine black sweeper. It is not very likely to see reprint, but it is not unreasonable to see one in the next two years.
Heritage Druid $6.56 $9.03 $2.47 N N Y Heritage Druid is not likely to be reprinted anytime soon unless in a Legacy preconstructed Elf deck. It is critical to the Elves decks in multiple formats, so it is worth having some on hand.
Mystical Tutor $5.99 $6.92 $0.93 N N N Mystical Tutor is not going to increase in price any time soon.
Green Sun's Zenith $5.22 $5.99 $0.77 N Y N Worldly Tutor[/card would have been a better reprint, but Green Sun's Zenith was fine. It will not go up anytime soon.
Chain Lightning $5.00 $7.40 $2.40 Y N Y Chain Lightning's reprinting helped lower the price of getting into Legacy Burn, one of the cheapest ways to getting into Legacy.
Deathrite Shaman $4.93 $5.67 $0.74 N N N Until Deathrite Shaman is unbanned in Modern, this will not move up in value.
Cabal Therapy $4.72 $7.35 $2.63 Y Y Y Cabal Therapy is a very popular card in Legacy and Vintage, so it has some value. The effect is unique, so it is not easily replaced.
Wrath of God $4.69 $5.32 $0.63 Y Y Y Despite being reprinted a lot and likely to be reprinted, Wrath of God is still worth having some in the trade binder.
Winter Orb $4.56 $6.00 $1.44 N N N While a fine card, this winter is not coming up in value.
Duplicant $4.40 $5.92 $1.52 Y Y  Y Duplicant is a great catch-all removal spell for all decks in Commander and thus will have demand.
Baleful Strix $4.32 $4.73 $0.41 N  Y N Baleful Strix is a great card but doesn't have much of a ceiling.
Regal Force $4.19 $7.50 $3.31 Y Y y Even though Regal Force could easily be reprinted, it is a great card to have and sees play in a lot of green decks.
Isochron Scepter $3.90 $5.24 $1.34 N Y  N Isochron Scepter is not worth going after.
Balance $3.41 $4.51 $1.10 N N N Balance is only playable in Vintage, so the demand is just not there.
Mother of Runes $3.00 $4.17 $1.17 N Y N Mother of Runes was also reprinted recently in a duel deck, which really hurt this card's value and it will be a long time before it goes up.
Ichorid $2.85 $4.47 $1.62 N N N Ichorid will not go up until it is printed into Modern for Dredge, which isn't likely to say the least.
Wall of Omens $2.76 $4.53 $1.77 Y Y Y Wall of Omens is a great uncommon for Modern that continues to have value even after multiple reprints.
Price of Progress $2.63 $3.55 $0.92 Y N Y Price of Progress's reprinting helped lower the price of getting into Legacy Burn, one of the cheapest ways to getting into Legacy.
Bloodbraid Elf $2.55 $2.24 $0.31 Y Y Y There are rumors Bloodbraid Elf might be unbanned in Modern, but that is just speculation as of this article. Regardless, that is why it is going up.
Goblin Charbelcher $2.46 $3.24 $0.78  N  N Goblin Charbelcher will only see demand when new players want to play that Legacy deck, and that is not enough demand to raise the price for Goblin Charbelcher.
Eight-and-a-Half-Tails $2.37 $5.39 $3.02 Y Eight-and-a-Half-Tails is a casual favorite is great to get for the casual players in your area. It is not great to get a lot, but having a few copies sis always nice.

Swords to Plowshares $2.30 $3.46 $1.16 Y Y Y Swords to Plowshares is one of those reprints that no matter how times it is reprinted, it just losses a little value.
Daze $2.20 $2.69 $0.49 Y N N Daze will not be reprinted for a while, but it is not seeing the play it once saw, so it is the best investment. It is not a bad one though to take a risk on.
Imperious Perfect $2.15 $2.72 $0.57 N N N Imperious Perfect is not likely to be reprinted soon but that does not mean she will go up any time soon.  The other elf lords are much better.

Young Pyromancer $1.89 $2.75 $0.86 Y Y Y Young Pyromancer will go up eventually.

Brago, King Eternal $0.99 Y N Y Brago, King Eternal is a very popular U/W commander and should always be something to consider.

Set Overview

Eternal Masters was a great set, all things considered. The main issue of the set was the price tag for packs and thus with drafting being the secondary goal for Wizards, this set was hard for the average Magic: the Gathering player. The reprints were great, the flavor was spot on, and there was value at all levels, not just the top rares and mythics. There was an acceptable amount of fluff cards, and the choice of the Khans of Tarkir common lands as the color fixing was a tad weak outside of Limited.

A lot of the cards went down overall, but some, like Force of Will, actually went up. This helped people get into Legacy and made some Commander and Modern cards a lot cheaper. It made acquiring foils of certain cards a lot easier, like Daze and Counterspell, as well as giving some cards foil versions for the first time, like Pyroblast and Toxic Deluge. Some of the shifts in rarity were good and bad. The shifts of Night's Whisper and Elvish Vanguard really helped with Pauper, while the upgraded rarities of Hertiage Druid and Shardless Agent were not so well received.

The only improvements on the set would be make the packs cheaper so more people can draft the set, have a longer print run, have at least one premier event for the set like there was for the two Modern Masters sets, and not to bump rarities too much.  Overall, it was a solid reprint set and the next one should be great if they follow this set's model.
