Welcome to the Magic Market Index. This article series documents the price changes of cards currently in print. This article will track how cards go from release to its time out of Standard, and as long as deemed necessary for non-Standard sets, as well as offer insight into what cards to invest in and what to ignore. The Magic market is a dangerous place, and this article is here to help guide players and speculators through the murky waters to greater returns.
This article will be updated once a week on Thursday. Currently, this article series is tracking Eternal Masters, Dragons of Tarkir, Magic Origins, Battle for Zendikar Block (Oath of the Gatewatch, Battle for Zendikar, Zendikar Expeditions) and Shadows over Innistrad Block (Shadows over Innistrad and Eldritich Moon). There are no current plans to track any promo sets, pack foils, or non-set releases. Otherwise, if it can be opened in a pack, it will be covered.
Card prices are picked on Thursday morning from TCG Player mid price, the price used by many for trading cards for cards. Going by the selling price involves whether to go by Ebay, TCG Player low, Star City Games, or another vendor. It is just simpler and cleaner to go by the trade value of TCG Player mid. Comments about cards are the opinions of the author, and should not be taken as facts or divine intervention. That said, comments and predictions are based on data and experience, not on idle speculation or an attempt to move certain cards. Cards that are worth $2.00 USD or more will be on the list. If a card is worth $1.99 or less, it will not appear on the list even if it was on the previous week.

Overall Summary
The state of the Magic market is losing value but still strong.
So Eldritch Moon has been fully spoiled and there is a full review of the set done here on Magic the Gathering Salvation (Link). The set is overall good and will lead to a good Standard. Several cards have seen an uptick in price, like Demonic Pact and Rattelchains.. Humans looks to be best deck coming out of the new set, but there is something to the Rites deck. Look into getting the cards for it.
Eternal Masters is shifting downwards as a set, which is to be expected. The set will start going up in a month or so when Conspiracy 2 comes out. Dragons of Tarkir and Magic Origins are all shifting down and looking to the later days of their Standard run. There was almost no cards from Dragons of Tarkir impacted by Eldritch Moon so far, so none of the cards in the set went up. Magic Origins had a few upticks in value.
The prerelease is this weekend and all of the Magic community will get to taste the card from Eldritch Moon. While prereleases are not the best value in terms of what to spend your money on, they are worth it for fun you will have with friends and stories of glory, hilarious stories that will be retold for years to come, and some really good trading you might not otherwise get.

Posted Jul 18, 2016KTK had a fairly large print run because it was drafted as 3x for 3 months and then as 2x for another 3 months. Additionally, tons of people cracked it for the Fetchlands.
Dragons of Tarkir only had 3 months as a 2x set and was never drafted as a 3x set. It's also the only large set ever printed where this is the case - Avacyn Restored, Gatecrash, and Rise of the Eldrazi (the other non-Fall Large sets) were all drafted by themselves as 3x for at least three months. It has only a few staple Eternal cards, so its draw from the Eternal crowd was much smaller as well.
On top of this, Collected Company has been the cornerstone of one of the most dominant strategies in Standard, and has made a splash in Modern. So it's one of the most expensive non-Land, non-Mythic Rare cards in recent memory.
All that said, the set is one of the few standalone sets in standard, so there's lower intra-block synergy than with BFZ and SOI cards, and it has only three months left in Standard, which is why everything is starting to creep downwards.

Posted Jul 20, 2016Sets in recent past have been printed at much larger number due to demand. Simple economics would say that since demand is keeping up with supply that prices should stay about the same. What determines the prices of a card is how much people want the cards in the set and are willing to buy boxes. I do not have the hard data here, so this is speculation. Khans sold a lot because it had fetch lands and many player wanted them as well as mrking them for potential value later. Battle for Zendikar/Oath of the Gatewatch had expeditions which a lot of people bought into hoping to get some cards worth a lot of money. Shadows and other sets did not have such incentive beyond the normal Limited and Standard demands, so the prices are a little higher since not as much product is opened as the other sets.
In all reality, what determines the prices is not the number of boxes produced but how many boxes are opened and if there is a compelling reason to buy boxes of the set over singles.
