With Wicked: For Good coming out this weekend, I’ve got the award winning musical on the brain today. Some of the characters in the musical are familiar, appearing in both Wicked and The Wizard of Oz. They’re larger than life which I think makes them great candidates for Magic: The Gathering.
Secret Lair doesn’t often release video game themed drops. The last time a video game was used for a drop was 2022. That year, Secret Lair had a Street Fighter Superdrop in January and two drops from Fortnite as part of the bigger June 2022 Superdrop. Since then, we’ve seen other IPs like The Walking Dead, Doctor Who, Furby, and even The Office come to Secret Lair but no video games. Then in October that changed with a massive Superdrop from PlayStation. That Superdrop was so successful that it was completely sold out in a matter of hours with The Last of Us and The Ghost of Tsushima selling out almost immediately. Now, another popular video game franchise is getting the Secret Lair treatment — Monster Hunter.
People love a grand gesture. Richard Garfield understood that so back in 1993, the year he created Magic: The Gathering, he commissioned a card to be used for the grandest of gestures. The card was given the name “Proposal” and was used to propose to his first wife, Lily Wu. Quinton Hoover, Lily’s favorite Magic artist was commissioned to create the artwork for this special card. That card's art has finally been revealed after 32 years.
I’m always amazed when a new set comes out for Universes Beyond with the great attention to detail and care that is taken to honor the original source material. Avatar: The Last Airbender will feature a bonus sheet that uses art directly from the tv show. That’s unusual but it doesn’t detract from how insanely talented the artists are that brought the rest of the set to life. I’d like to highlight some of my favorite art pieces from the upcoming Avatar set.
